Message from the Principal

The Feast of Corpus Christi

The Feast of Corpus Christi occurred last Sunday and I noted with some interest, an item from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, explaining the importance of this feast. It spoke in terms of the sacrifice of Jesus being the same, as the sacrifice of the Eucharist.

It set me to thinking about the Catechism, as I can recall studying the green and red Catechisms when I was at school. They were ‘question and answer style’ rote learning, of the teachings of the Church. They fell out of favour and many people missed them as the structured approach gave certainty to people in their spiritual life. Things are much more challenging now, and it is also a very challenging time for our Church.

I often try to gain comfort and certainty through reference to the Gospels and it is interesting that our Pope is driving us back to the Gospels and the teachings of Jesus, within the Gospels. He is also encouraging us to a greater consideration of the poor and the marginalised.

There is an Australian philosopher called Peter Singer, who is a devout atheist and he has encouraged people to greater levels of charity. He argues that there is an imperative for us to do this and that we are obliged to do so. (You can ‘YouTube’ him).

Australians are amongst the best in the world in terms of their per capita donations and we should take great pride in this. It seems to be a never ending challenge for our world.

I wish to congratulate our students who donated $1801 to Caritas, as their Lenten offering.

Our religion has gone beyond being rewarded for meeting our spiritual obligations. We are being called to listen again, to the teachings of the Gospels.

Message from the Deputies

Next week, Year 11 and Year 12 students will have their Semester One reports sent home. On Tuesday 23 June the College will be hosting Parent/Student/Teacher interviews for parents of Year 11 and Year 12 students from 3.30pm to 7.30pm in the CASS. I encourage all parents of Year 11 and Year 12 students to make a time to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers. These meetings are intended to include your child so I encourage you to bring them with you.

If your child received an attribute mark of 1 or 2 on their report, then you are required to make an interview time with the teacher concerned to discuss the matter. If, for whatever reason, you are unable to make it to interview night and you need to speak to a teacher, could I ask that you contact the teacher directly, preferably via email, to discuss the matter as soon as possible. With the report will be an interview request form. Can I ask that you indicate the teacher/s you wish to see and circle a preferred time slot.

For Year 11 students, a letter indicating your child’s performance in the recent OLNA testing and how to interpret this information will be included.

With the report you will also receive an ‘Absentee History’ form which lists the dates your child has been absent from school without notification. It is essential that our attendance records are accurate and up-to-date. Could I ask that you please attend to this form and return this to the College via your child’s Form teacher.

Local Matters

Star Search

We’ve been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grill’d Leederville this June!

Local Matters is the Grill’d community donation program that sees each Grill’d restaurant donate $500 back into the community every month. The donation is split between 3 local community groups $300 / $100 / $100.

Entertainment Books

If you would like an Entertainment Book, but forgot to order one, there are some available for sale at the Front Office. Each Book costs $65.

Congratulations

A huge congratulations to Christine Nott (Year 9) and Htoo Eh Shee Paw (Year 8) on making the Grand Finale of Star Search! The finals were held on Saturday 6 June at the Morley Sports and Recreation Centre and showcased exceptional young performers from across metropolitan Perth. Both girls finished in the Top 10 with very strong singing performances.

Well done Christine and Htoo Eh Shee!

HOW YOU CAN HELP?

We’d love your support in receiving the highest $300 donation! Simply head to Grill’d Leederville during June for a burger and pop your Local Matters token in our jar. The group with the most tokens at the end of the month receives the largest donation. It’s a simple (and delicious) way to show your support! All funds received will be used for supplies for the Aranmore Breakfast Club.

You’ll find us on a jar at Grill’d Leederville, 128 Oxford St, Leederville.

Year 10 Drama

Year 10 Drama students are rehearsing for this year’s performance of scenes from The Crucible. The play is a rich reflection of the mass hysteria which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692-93. Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft during the trials. Arthur Miller wrote the play as an allegory for his own times when many were being pursued for having links to the Communist Party in 1953.

Students have been enthusiastically learning their lines and developing their characters for this presentation.

NWAS Touch Rugby

The Year 9/10 Aranmore mixed touch rugby team has played 4 games and remains undefeated. We have managed to play some exciting touch, demonstrating some superb skills and athleticism.

Our stars have been our girls, who have led the try scoring, and shown tenacity in defence. Well done Pania Kara, Kate Sarmiento, Langley Sesega and Natahlia Thompson for leading the way.

Our boys have once again worked tirelessly in defence and shown exceptional skills. Best players so far have been James Gray, Nika Morehu, Cam Sarmiento, Daniel Spina and Jaylen Tuapola. We have 2 more games and then hopefully a Grand Final. Well done all and let’s keep it up!
