In total 1761 laptops were handed over to the UET, Peshawar for distribution to the students.
A ceremony titled, “Naway Sahar Laptops Distribution Program” was held for the toppers of
UET, Peshawar in which upto 34 laptops were distributed to students while 4 laptops were
given to the students of KP Technical Board. The rest of laptops were distributed phase wise
to students who scored 70 pc marks in their examinations.
Secretary Higher Education, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ms. Farah Hamid distributed laptops
among students. In her address to the students, she said the “Naway Sahar laptop scheme”
was planned and implemented smoothly and transparently, adding that the Government
was planning to establish monitoring and maintenance system so that students could report
in case of trouble shoot, adding, “students should use these laptops for education purpose
and healthy entertainment, the Higher Education Department will strictly check off abus-
ers”.
The Vice Chancellor, Dean of Engineering, Registrar, Heads of Departments, senior faculty
members and Project Director Naway Sahar, Adeel Shah were also present on the occasion.
The vice chancellor urged the students to make better use of laptops and be thankful to the
Provincial Government for their contribution to their studies.
The Vice Chancellor performed the groundbreaking ceremony of Indus-
trial and Mechanical Engineering Departments at Jalozai Campus in the
presence of faculty members and the administrative staff. The Jalozai Cam-
pus of UET, Peshawar approved at the cost of Rs. 6.56 b will be a fully resi-
dential campus constructed at 400-acre land. Speaking at the ceremony,
the Vice chancellor said the occasion was the realization of a dream that
would continue improving high-quality education to the local people. He
added that, standard of the University was based on its quality of educa-
tion and Jalozai Campus must follow the chain. On completion of Jalozai
campus, the total student enrollment, including Peshawar and satellite
campuses will be doubled upto 8000, the faculty to 200 and introduction
of state-of-the-art laboratories would definitely make a huge difference in
delivering quality education. The Vice chancellor said the University was
doing considerable work, as eight academic blocks would be constructed
phase wise, adding, the Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering
Departments are almost near completion while civil work on Industrial engineering and Mechanical engineering had started with the ground-
breaking of these departments at the cost of Rs. 310 m. He added that the development of human resources was a central tenet of the Univer-
sity policy, and the initiative would considerably add to the human resource development of Jalozai Campus as more than 100 scholars were
currently pursuing Ph.Ds' at world known universities.
Among others, Former Registrar Prof. Abdul Jabbar, Advisor Finance Muhammad Sarwar Khan, Heads of Teaching Departments and senior
University officials were present on the occasion. Later on, the delegation walked through the Civil and Electrical Engineering departments
who appreciated the quality of work.

South Asia Expert Meeting at Katmandu, Nepal
A delegation from Pakistan participated in South-Asia Experts Meeting and Training Workshop (1-3 March 2013) organized by National Soci-
ety of Earthquake Technology (NSET)-Nepal at Katmandu in collaboration with the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation, headquar-
tered at Italy. The event was sponsored by the USAID. This event was attended by the GEM Foundation Secretary, GEM Model Facility Experts
and Consultants, Experts and Participants from South-Asia Region (e.g. India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal besides Pakistan).
The purpose of the workshop was to introduce state-of-the-art GEM's tools, methods, and metrics for measuring seismic risk of communities
holistically; to have detailed discussions related to the technological and methodological needs within the South Asia region pertaining to the
assessment of socio−economic vulnerability and resilience of communities; with a subsequent goal to better understand regionally specific
drivers of seismic risk and resilience and to be able to suggest pertinent factors for integrated seismic risk assessments, accounting for both
physical and social parameters of the exposure (structures and infrastructures and population) contributing to the total seismic risk.
The delegation from Pakistan included Dr. Naveed Ahmad, Assistant Professor, at The Earthquake Engineering Center (EEC) , who led the dele-
gation presenting Pakistan at the Platform as an ambassador of Earthquake Engineering Research; Mr. Adeel Arshad and Miss. Tayyaba Bibi,
Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, UET Peshawar; and Mr. Syed Tallataf Hussain, Lecturer at the Department of Earth Sciences
(Abbottabad Campus). All the participants were introduced to the state-of-the-art tools for modelling and assessing seismic risk of communi-
ties around the globe; with hands-on practice for seismic hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment of communities in the Katmandu state of
Nepal.
In his recommendation, Dr. Naveed said, “There is a strong need GEM feels for modelling seismic hazard and seismic vulnerability of struc-
tures and infrastructures in the South Asian region, including Pakistan, in order for the GEM's tools to be efficiently used for earthquake risk
management in this region”, added Dr. Naveed Ahmad that an utmost important activity essential for countries with high seismic risk like Paki-
stan.
Furthermore, Dr. Naveed Ahmad observed, after meeting with the counterpart experts from South Asia region, that “despite our tremendous
development in earthquake engineering research, our key strengths and research products are not fully defined in the South Asia region,
which is demanded since this
region is sharing almost similar cul-
ture and societies. There is a need
for the development of a commu-
nication channel to disseminate
knowledge and strength in earth-
quake engineering research. In
this regards, an idea is coined by
Dr. Naveed Ahmad, with the
advice of Prof. Dr. Akhtar Naeem
Khan and Prof. Qaisar Ali, to estab-
lish Seismic Risk Section at the EEC
that can help support the EEC in
achieving its goal of making seis-
mic resilient societies in Pakistan
and neighboring countries sharing
similar cultures like the South Asia

Addressing the closing ceremony, Member Science PSF Dr. Khalil
Ahmad said this year, keeping in view the importance of Energy
Issues, PSF decided to give theme to the Expo titled “Energies, for a
Sustainable World” for showcasing in Pakistan during March-April,
2013, he added. He thanked the Embassy of France for collabora-
tion with PSF in different science education programmes over the
years.
Director General, Dr. Khalid Islam, Pakistan Council of Renewable
Energy Science (PCRET) briefed the audience about different pro-
jects offered by PICRET. Dean University of Engineering and Tech-
nology, Peshawar, Dr. Zahid Mehmood earlier welcomed the guests
while Dr. Najeeb Ullah also shared his thoughts about his Ph.D.
work with Cambridge University, UK.
The expo attracted students from educational institutions of KPK
the opening ceremony of which was performed by the Vice chan-
cellor-an impressive forum to create awareness on importance of
energy resources and their sustainable use.
The International Traveling expo titled, “Energies, for a Sustainable
World” conducted by the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) in col-
laboration with Embassy of France was held at University.
At the concluding ceremony, Dr. Frederic Bessat, Counsel Develop-
ment and Cooperation, Embassy of France, while speaking on the
occasion appreciated the work of PSF for the promotion of Science,
and expressed the hope to continue its support to the people of
Pakistan in coping with the current energy crisis and promotion of
Research and Development in the country.
Addressing the students, the delegate cited his personal experi-
ence, that his father advised, “if you are in Pakistan, you have to like
people of Pakistan and understand them well. “On behalf of the
Government of France, he said, “I want to assure you that we like
you, and the France Government is with the people of Pakistan in
putting this country in right direction”. He said, the Embassy of
France directly and through the European Union is helping the Gov-
ernment of Pakistan in building dams, schools and offering Ph.D.
scholarships to scholars and need-based scholarships to Pakistani
students, particularly from KPK”.
International Travelling Expo
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at Mechani-
cal Engineering Department held a mega event of Student Profes-
sional Development Conference (SPDC) from 22nd – 24th February
2013. SPSC is the biggest event organized each year in different engi-
neering universities of Pakistan. Representatives from engineering
universities across Pakistan had gathered at this three-day presti-
gious event, which featured many contests including Student
Design Competition and Technical Paper Presentation etc. This year
ASME UET, Peshawar hosted the event in which 18 engineering uni-
versities from Pakistan will participate in different competitions
including student leadership seminar, video, technical presenta-
tion, and Poster competition and vice chair competition. The win-
ners of these competitions ate expected to attend the SPSC to be
held in Malaysia in near future.
Asme Holds Professional Development Course
EUTA Takes OathThe oath taking ceremony of Engineering University Teachers Asso-
stciation (EUTA) was held on February 21 . The Vice chancellor
administered oath from Dr. Sahar Noor as President; Dr. Riaz Akbar
as Vice President; Dr. Afzal as General Secretary and Dr. Nasir as
Joint Secretary. The Executive Body also took oath on the occasion.
The vice chancellor said he was ready to accept any task which
would help the cause of higher education in the University and
appreciated the role of teachers for standing by University adminis-
tration in all times.
The EEC at the Civil Engineering Department performed the first-
ever test conducted in Pakistan on a full scale confined brick
masonry building to determine its seismic capacity and risk
assessment for future construction in the country since confined
brick masonry buildings performed well in the October 8, 2005
Kashmir Earthquake.
Dr. Khan Shahzada, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engi-
neering performed the test under the research project titled,
“Seismic Capacity Assessment of Confined Brick Masonry Build-
ings” funded by the Directorate of Science and Technology (DOST)
Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After October 8, 2005's
Kashmir earthquake the use of confined brick masonry buildings
though increased drastically, its seismic capacity assessment has
to be determined experimentally on scientific basis. There was no
scientific date available, which could inform the industry whether
it was safe to use brick masonry for construction or not. Thus, Dr.
Shahzada, the Principal Investigator performed the full scale first-

President EUTA, Dr. Sahar Noor expressed full confidence in the
leadership of vice chancellor and said that EUTA having no political
affiliation would only work for the welfare of teaching community
and betterment of University as they believed in “ together we can
do it”, theme chosen by EUTA for this tenure.

The mini Olympics was held from March 6th–19th at Mardan Campus, aimed to deliver
the extra ordinary enthusiasm of young players and to materialize the ecstatic event.
The MINI Olympics Mardan campus is a flagship event organised by Mardan campus by
setting up a sporting legacy for the last three years. The event featured various sport-
ing events in which different teams from the Departments of Computer Software and
Telecommunications Engineering competed against each other.
The chief guest, Prof. Dr. Zahid Mehmood, Dean UET Peshawar along with coordinator
Mardan campus, Dr. Imran khan and the faculty members opened the event. The Dean,
in his address received the participating teams with warm note. Later on, the chief
guest lit the torch and declared the MINI Olympics 2013 Open.
The closing ceremony marked with distribution of trophies and awards of the Mini
Olympics was held on March 19th, 2013. The Vice chancellor was the chief guest on the
occasion.
Mini Olympics at UET Mardan Campus held
All Pakistan Optics Olympiad was held at GIKI, arranged by the Soci-
ety of Photo-optical Intrumentation Engineers(SPIE). A group of 38
students participated from UET Peshawar, headed by Hashim khan,
student of mechanical engineering 5th semester who was the SPIE
Ambassador from UET Peshawar. Participating teams attended dif-
ferent modules. Benazir Shahid , Maimona Zahid, Hashim Khan and
Tayyab Khan were amongst the winners in different slots in the
Olympiad.

The vice chancellor said he was ready to accept any task which
would help the cause of higher education in the University and
appreciated the role of teachers for standing by University adminis-
tration in all times.
The EEC at the Civil Engineering Department performed the first-
ever test conducted in Pakistan on a full scale confined brick
masonry building to determine its seismic capacity and risk
assessment for future construction in the country since confined
brick masonry buildings performed well in the October 8, 2005
Kashmir Earthquake.
Dr. Khan Shahzada, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engi-
neering performed the test under the research project titled,
“Seismic Capacity Assessment of Confined Brick Masonry Build-
ings” funded by the Directorate of Science and Technology (DOST)
Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After October 8, 2005's
Kashmir earthquake the use of confined brick masonry buildings
though increased drastically, its seismic capacity assessment has
to be determined experimentally on scientific basis. There was no
scientific date available, which could inform the industry whether
it was safe to use brick masonry for construction or not. Thus, Dr.
Shahzada, the Principal Investigator performed the full scale first-

could offer actual results. The results of test yielded that the lat-
eral/seismic capacity of confined brick masonry buildings was
three times greater than the unreinforced masonry buildings
which was also tested earlier
at EEC in 2010.

President EUTA, Dr. Sahar Noor expressed full confidence in the
leadership of vice chancellor and said that EUTA having no political
affiliation would only work for the welfare of teaching community
and betterment of University as they believed in “ together we can
do it”, theme chosen by EUTA for this tenure.

The mini Olympics was held from March 6th–19th at Mardan Campus, aimed to deliver
the extra ordinary enthusiasm of young players and to materialize the ecstatic event.
The MINI Olympics Mardan campus is a flagship event organised by Mardan campus by
setting up a sporting legacy for the last three years. The event featured various sport-
ing events in which different teams from the Departments of Computer Software and
Telecommunications Engineering competed against each other.
The chief guest, Prof. Dr. Zahid Mehmood, Dean UET Peshawar along with coordinator
Mardan campus, Dr. Imran khan and the faculty members opened the event. The Dean,
in his address received the participating teams with warm note. Later on, the chief
guest lit the torch and declared the MINI Olympics 2013 Open.
The closing ceremony marked with distribution of trophies and awards of the Mini
Olympics was held on March 19th, 2013. The Vice chancellor was the chief guest on the
occasion.
Mini Olympics at UET Mardan Campus held
All Pakistan Optics Olympiad was held at GIKI, arranged by the Soci-
ety of Photo-optical Intrumentation Engineers(SPIE). A group of 38
students participated from UET Peshawar, headed by Hashim khan,
student of mechanical engineering 5th semester who was the SPIE
Ambassador from UET Peshawar. Participating teams attended dif-
ferent modules. Benazir Shahid , Maimona Zahid, Hashim Khan and
Tayyab Khan were amongst the winners in different slots in the
Olympiad.

One day Seminar on “Energy Management system and Renewable energy” arranged by the SMEDA (Small and Medium Enterprises
Development Authority) was held on 8th March 2013 at UET Bannu Campus. Dr.Irfan Khattak ,The Chairman Electrical Engineering
Department, started the event with a welcome address to Engr Hidayat Ullah Khattak. Later on, Engr HidayatUllah Khattak addressed the
achievements and importance of SMEDA and narrated some practical applications regarding “Energy Management System and
Renewablew energy”.

UET Peshawar's “Octa Machina” makes up to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon, Malaysia
As many as 13 Pakistani teams will be up against 137 others in Malaysia at the Sepang F-1 track in Kaula Lumpur to be held in July at the
Shell Eco-Marathon 2013 event. Haider Khan and his fellows, the final year students of Department of Mechanical Engineering designed a
car – a 184 kilogram , 7 8cc grey four-wheeler named, “Octa Machina”, which does around 65 kilometres per litre (km /l) – passed most of
the tests, with a few suggestions from the specialists. Haider and his seven team members are set to show up in Malaysia at the event.
Haider's team modified a 125 cc bike's engine. They used an aerodynamic, fibre glass body to increase mileage and are also trying to attach
an Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system for more improvements. This is the first time two teams from UET Peshawar are competing at
international forum. A panel of judges from academia, media industry and government sector inspected the vehicles at the launch cere-
mony held at NUST, Rawalpindi on 17th May, which will be followed with a grand event where Pakistani teams will get the opportunity to
showcase their prototype cars and compete with 130 teams from 16 countries of Asia. At the launch event, UET Peshawar's team won the
“award for safety” while innovation prize was also awarded to UET's “Urban Concept vehicle”. Besides UET Peshawar, NUST, UET
Jamshoro, NED, Air University, GIK, PNEC and Fast are participating in the event.
The Shell Eco-Marathon is an educational project that encourages and fosters innovation in exploring potential solutions to both current
and future transport and energy challenges. This year in addition to prizes for vehicles which can go furthest using the least amount of
energy, there will also be awards for off-track performance, including innovation, design and others.
Shell Pakistan has also awarded six cash prizes to the teams worth Rs 0.9 million altogether – UET Peshawar team and NUST’s team won
separate award worth Rs.2 00,000 for the most innovative car.

Dr. Muhammad Hamad Ali Zai recently completed his PhD in Engineering Sciences from RWTH Aachen
University, Germany with the thesis titled, “Exploiting Wireless Link Dynamics.” After completing his Ph.D,
he has joined the Department of Computer Systems Engineering as an Assistant Professor. He received
the “summa cum laude” accolade for his research, granted to only top 10 percent of researchers in
Europe. Previously he obtained the DAAD-Siemens scholarship for MS at the same institute through a
careful scrutiny process in which only two students from South-East Asia were selected. During his
research at RWTH Aachen, Dr. Zai won a grant of PKR 26 Million to support his research. He has also
participated in several European Union research projects such as MOMENTUM and UMIC. One of his
papers won the “Best Abstract award” at ACM Sensys 2010, the top ranked conference in the field of
sensor networks. Furthermore he has more than 30 publications in ISI indexed journals and conferences.
His research interests include networking technologies as the Internet of things, sensornets, delay tolerant networking and cloud
computing. He is particularly interested in applications, protocols, architectures and evaluation tools for the networks of the
future where computers will be embedded everywhere and in everything. He has conducted extensive research in one such class
of networks (i.e.,sensornets) and developed algorithms, protocols and architectures for energy-efficient, reliable and
opportunistic communications.

cated DSL connection for the academic & research purposes of the faculty members of Bannu Campus.

Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI).
