IICD was setup as an autonomous Institute by the government of Rajasthan in 1995 to act as a catalyst of change in the craft sector. In October 2007, the Institute was taken over, to be managed and funded, by Ambuja Educational Institute (AEI) as a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative. As its mandate notes: “The main objective of IICD is to generate knowledge, upgrade skills and foster attitudes in order to develop highly motivated change agents in the craft sector.” IICD has come a long way since its inception, establishing itself as the leading institution in the area of craft education and in shaping a new generation of craft professionals. It has not only grown in terms of activities, programmes and number of students, but also has created footprints in the wider craft community through various outreach programmes.

IICD’s unique pedagogy which synergizes traditional knowledge and skills with contemporary methodologies attracts students from diverse backgrounds with a common passion for crafts and design. The Academic Year 2016-2017 started with taking in new students. GLOBALIZATION & HOMOGENIZATION OF CULTURESModernity & Rootlessness Mr. Binil Mohan

Abstract of paper presented at 'International Conference on Design Pedagogy and Contextual Aesthetic' at NIT, Calicut – 19th Jan-21st Jan 2017

The power of ‘storytelling’ is immense and widely acknowledged. In fact global capitalism has leveraged the power of storytelling to further its agenda in the form of marketing tool and as a key element of product differentiation. Stories have the power to construct meaning and are one of the crucial elements in identity creation. This power, if adequately leveraged, can be a disruptor in homogenization of cultures and will be an effective way to preserve and foster diversity in a globalised world. Crafts & Design education today needs to understand this and embrace stories at par with aesthetics and processes. Stories bring the crucial cultural value, authenticity and rootedness to products in a globalised world. An approach towards incorporating stories in design as an invariable part will go a long way in resisting homogenization of cultures, apart from meaningful translation of cultural value to a market economy. In a country like India where the array of traditional cultural assets are particularly impressive, the design schools have the responsibility to understand, document and build knowledge around these to consequently leverage the same in identity creation and cultural rootedness. The crafts and design education ecosystem should be driven collaboratively by stories, aesthetics and processes. An alignment of crafts and design education along these lines will enable it to be the fulcrum in preserving cultural diversity and rootedness in a globalised world and thus play a historic role.

ANALYZING AND UNDERSTANDING ASPECTS THAT INCREASE RECALL VALUE OF ART IN URBAN PUBLIC SPACES Ms Khushboo Bharti

Abstract of paper presented at ‘International Conference on Creativity and Cognition in Art and Design (ICCCAD 2017)’, National Institute of Design (NID), India and National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS – Jan 2017

Art in public spaces fulfill the purpose of making art reach the common people and help create a discourse on art. As such public art further makes possible for different artists to reinforce the public spaces and transform them into functional areas and make art accessible directly to public. As an important form of communication, art in public spaces strive to form a connection with the audience. People do not have to make an effort to go and witness the creative elements in a gallery or to closed compounds for a select few. Public spaces are ‘a Democratic Space’ where the works are accessible to people all the time for them to enjoy and also overlook at their will.In more recent years there have been efforts to make these public art places more engaging and lot of good examples of the research have build an argument for or against them. This research paper is focused on understanding how people recall different forms of arts in public spaces of Jaipur
