Principal’s Message
We are on the final stretch with barely 8 weeks left before we
complete another year.
I want to remind everyone that we are approaching a critical
deadline in the course selection process for next year. On April
24, students were given a final opportunity to verify their cours-
es for 2014/15. Accurate verification and planning is very im-
portant as it is used to determine staffing and course require-
ments for the coming year. It is very important that we have a
timetable and staff plan that best meets the needs of our student
body as there is no extra room in our school budgets. Give this
process the attention and consideration it deserves as it could
mean courses are dropped from the timetable for next year.
Results from the 1st semester provincial exams are in and again
we had very impressive results. Again our averages are above
district and provincial averages in all 5 exam subjects (ranging
from 4%-10%). Congratulations to staff and students for creat-
ing this culture of success.
• 20% of the student exams scored greater than 86%.
• 101 students scored above 90%.
• Congratulations to Catherine Cao who scored 100% in
Science 10.
While exam results are one important measure of a school’s
performance, of equal or greater importance are the many other
enriching programs that go on within the school. I stress the
importance of getting involved in the school beyond your
academics as many Universities are looking at extra-curricular
activities in their selection process.
Elgin Park has a number of fantastic programs that enhance our
school and its reputation and provide wonderful experiences to
everyone involved:
• Our Fine Arts department boasts one of the largest
music and drama programs in the district.
• The junior Elgin Park Players finished the year with an
outstanding production of “Peter Pan” under the
direction of Cassidy Poulton, Morgan Phillips and
Demi Montes. The performances by the students were
highly entertaining and very well received. Special
thanks to Mr. Dean Donnelly and the Elgin Park Tech
crew for the time spent to create the scenes of “Never
Neverland”.
• During the week of April 22 to April 25 the English
department held activities in the school to promote
Shakespeare’s birthday. In the first week of May, the
Modern Languages department will host a
multicultural week to promote languages.
• There were four very successful student travel
programs during the months of March and April: The
Modern Languages Department and Boy’s Rugby
team travelled to France and Spain, the Band
Department travelled to Japan and a number of senior
students in Socials 11 and History 12 travelled to
Britain, Netherlands and France.
In closing, I need to acknowledge the hard work that the Dry
Grad Committee is doing for the class of 2014. This dedicated
group has been working hard to create a positive, safe and en-
joyable Dry Grad event for this year’s graduating class. I have
been involved in many of these events over the years and to
make it a great success it requires everyone’s support and help.
Anything that you can do to help and support this committee
would be greatly appreciated. I wish everyone the best as we
enter the last portion of the school year.
Bruce Filsinger
Message from the Superintendent of Schools/CEO
Dear Parents,
As you know, teachers are in a legal position to strike and beginning April 23rd, they will be in phase one
of their job action. This first phase will see teachers reducing some activities like supervision and commu-
nications with management but these actions should not directly impact your child.
While there likely will be no direct impact on children in phase one, it is important to know that it will not
be business as usual in our schools. Your most important point of contact for your school will remain your
classroom teacher and principal as they will have the most current information as the strike progresses.
We appreciate your patience and we will continue to provide system-wide communications through our
website, www.surreyschools.ca.
Regards,
Jordan Tinney

th 2014, 42 Elgin Language students and 5 teachers spent 12 amazing
days touring Paris, Provence and Barcelona. The experiences were too numerous to mention all
of them, but some highlights included: A visit to the top of the Eiffel Tower, The Arc de
Triomphe, The Louvre, The Popes Palace, The famous Sagrada Familia Cathedral, a cruise on
the Mediterranean, an official Barcelona soccer match, playing soccer and volleyball on the
beaches of Barcelona, learning to make Paella with an authentic chef, cycling through the parks
of Barcelona, and strolling down La Rambla avenue while shopping and eating all sorts of
Spanish delights. I wish to commend our students on their exemplary behavior as they took their
role of ambassadors for EPS as well as Canada very seriously. I also wish to thank our
phenomenal team of chaperones: Mr. Fasse, Mme. Kerouac, Mme. Dennis and Mr. Byrne. The
trip simply would not have happened without you all!!

SSA scholarships 2014 We would like to congratulate three or our recent Elgin Park Secondary 2013 grads who received the Secondary School Apprenticeship scholarship in April! All three attended Surrey School District District Partnership programs while at Elgin. Nick Shears participated in the Carpentry program, Stuart Sheeshka attended the Auto Service Technician Program and Vicki Latchinian spent 2 semesters in the Hairdressing program. The SSA $1,000 bursary is awarded to Secondary School Apprentices for sustained and exceptional work as an apprentice. The money is intended to assist apprentices with the purchase of tools, equipment, materials or tuition necessary to continue in their trade. Scholarships were awarded at the Surrey School District Board of Trustees meeting held on April 10, 2014. We are very proud of the success of all three of these students!
JOHN CAREY – provincial SKILLS CANADA 2014 Congratulations to John Carey who participated in the Provincial Skills Canada competition at the Abottsford Tradex on April 9, 2014 in the Plumbing category. We appreciate him representing Elgin Park in this very competitive post-secondary challenge. Well Done John!!!
HandsHandsHandsHands----On Trade Experiences for Surrey Students! On Trade Experiences for Surrey Students! On Trade Experiences for Surrey Students! On Trade Experiences for Surrey Students! Last summer, Surrey School District piloted a Skills Exploration 10 Summer Learning course and introduced a Discover Trades 11/12 course at one of the secondary schools. Both construction-related trades programs were highly successful and the school career counsellors are presently following up with the students who completed these programs to help them map any expressed interest in trades-related programs (i.e. ACE IT and/or post-secondary pathways, etc.) The Skills Exploration 10 Course is being offered again this summer. July 2 – July 25, 2014 (8:30am – 2:30pm) at Fraser Heights and Frank Hurt.
Skills Exploration 10 will give students entering grade 10 the opportunity to experience a hands-on introduction to the construction trades of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and welding.
Students will learn essential skills such as how to measure, cut, wire, build and weld; skills and attitudes needed for success in school and in the workplace; the benefits of Apprenticeship and Surrey District Partnership Programs, and career related opportunities.
This course is full days/4 days per week and will include guest speakers and field trips to post-secondary institutions and industry facilities.
As this is a full day program and very labour intensive, students must be able to work independently on a job-site environment with minimum one on one instruction.
Please note that the first week is Wednesday to Friday, all others are Monday to Thursday and final week is Monday to Friday.

The Elgin Model UN club attended the Canadian High Schools Model United Nations conference, one of the largest in Western Canada, held in downtown Vancouver during the weekend of April 4-6 of this month.
It was the 10th season of the conference, and opened with the former Prime Minister Kim Campbell as keynote speaker. An exhilarating experience debating with peers, being woken in the middle of the night to avert a crisis (just like in the real world!), meeting new people and making new friends. Once again, our ORCAs made us proud with Michael Twamley earning honourable mention. The next Model UN conference is in May from the 16th to the 18th. Stay tuned to hear as our Orcas take part in this wonderful experience.
