Newsletter April 2012
On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March the PCAT State Dressage and Show Jumping Championships were held at the Tasmanian Equestrian Centre, Lauderdale (Hobart). TPRC had a large number of riders competing this year, riders included;
Dressage:A Group - Alice Hirst, Isabelle Cameron, Michaela Van Rooye & Jess PykeB Group - Isabel Gibson, Laura Johnstone & Hannah ChatwinC Group - Ellie Gillow, Maddy Pearn & Bethany HirstGroup dressage - Abby Viney & Maddy Pearn
Show Jumping:A Group - Alice Hirst, Erin Bowman, Michaela Van Rooye, Alanna Stubbs, Abby Viney, Emily Ruffo & Jess Pyke B Group - Katherine Temple, Laura Johnstone, Hannah Chatwin, Isabelle Cameron, Emily Ruffo & Abby Viney, C Group - Jess Pyke, Maddy Pearn & Ellie Gillow
Our super coach Claire Walker was there all weekend supporting riders, as well as Jo McFarlane, who travelled down for the show jumping phase. We had some success in dressage, with Michaela placing 2nd in ‘A’ group and Isabelle Cameron not far behind at 5th. The team of Michaela, Isabelle & Ellie placed 5th overall.
Abby Viney did a great job organising a Zone musical dressage team. The team consisted of Abby & Maddy from TPRC and riders from West Tamar and Launceston Pony Clubs. Their musical theme was ‘AFL’, hence riders dressed in football guernseys and socks. The team placed 4th.
In show jumping Alice placed 4th in ‘A’ group riding Bandman, in a very tight competition, Katherine Temple was one of only 9 riders in the ‘B’ group jump-off, but unfortunately some rails put her out of the main placings and Jess riding Gossip Girl rode to victory with an awesome jump-off round in ‘C’ group, winning from a field of 38 other riders. Maddy Pearn should be commended for a fantastic effort, getting into the jump-off and riding a fantastic round.
The team of Alice, Katherine and Jess placed 3rd in the show jumping teams section and TPRC were presented the Barwidgee Snowdon Trophy jointly with Huntingfield Pony Club, for the most successful Club over the 2 days of competition, but we have later found out there was an error with the scores and TPRC actually came 2nd, damn!
Thank you to both of our wonderful coaches, for giving up their time over the weekend. Also to parents who assisted in many jobs such as judging and pencilling etc. It was a great weekend had by all, except the freezing weather on Saturday.
Riders who have passed their ‘C’ testEmily Hirst, Daryna Carter, Bailey Elias, and Jackie Harvey. Well done riders.
Bunnings sausage sizzle - We still require help on the day, if you haven’t contacted Kylee about helping on the day please do so.

Handy HintsA hoof abscess, referred to as sub-solar abscesses, can develop following the entry of microorganisms into the sensitive internal hoof structures under the sole or heels. They are the most common cause of lameness in paddocked and working horses. Microorganisms can also gain entry as a result of sole bruising by a stone or penetration of the sole by a sharp object such as a nail prick or a closely driven nail when fitting shoes. Horses with ‘seedy toe’ following laminitis also have a high risk of developing infection within the ‘seedy’ cavity which allows entry to the deeper layers of the sensitive lamellae. Horses and ponies with a history of chronic laminitis have a high incidence of repeated hoof abscesses. The wet, low oxygen environment under the soles in mud or wet conditions often encourages the colonisation of anaerobic microbes, such as Clostridia spp in the soil or from the stable bedding which can gain entry via hairline cracks in the sole or around the frog. Horses standing in their own droppings have a risk of tetanus organisms gaining entry to their internal hoof structure. These ideal conditions most occur commonly after rain and wet conditions following a dry period.
Hoof infections trapped between the hoof wall, sole or lamellae can be very painful with reluctance to bear weight on the hoof, standing on the toe of the hoof, swelling and ‘heat’ around the pastern and fetlock. In severe cases the swelling and warmth will ascend up the limb and may be confused with a tendon swelling. However, ‘warmth’ in the infected hoof when held up and cupped in the hand as compared to the adjacent hoof is indicative of a hoof infection. Occasionally, the infection of the abscess will build up internal pressure within the hoof and burst through the bulbs of the heels, or around the coronary band. If a horse is extremely lame and transfers weight to the adjacent ‘good ’limb, then there is a risk of overloading the supporting hoof, especially in a large or heavily conditioned horse or pony.Handy hints provided by John Konke

Jackie Harvey has been in the sportlight lately for her success in Speedway. Jackie was featured in The Examiner and mentioned on the radio over the past week. Jackie was recently involved in a crash on the speedway circuit, but has showed courage, coming out no reservations to the next meet. We wish Jackie all the best with her Speedway pursuits.
Goodluck JackieGoodluck to Jackie Harvey who is trying out for the 2012 Prince Phillip Mounted Games Team. The selected riders will travel to South Australia, to compete on the 8th of September. If selected Jackie will be representing Tasmania, against all other States from Australia.
To meet the criteria, Jackie must have achieved their ‘C’ test, be under 16 years of age and competent riding a range of unfamiliar horses.

Sunday 1st of April saw a few TPRC riders compete at the Launceston Pony & Riding Club, grade 4 and 5 One Day Event Championships, these riders were Charlotte Youngman riding Kerrilea Kucinda, Ellie Gillow riding Gretel, Oscara Dowling riding Woody (who unfortunatelty had to pull out due to horse lameness, but were great supporters throughout the day) and Jess Pyke riding Jimmy Possum.
It was a great day, especially for young riders or horses, to compete in a proper competition atmosphere. Ellie placed 4th in grade 4 junior and Charlotte 6th in grade 5 junior, well done girls.

The Committee has decided to publish a twelve month canteen roster. Every family, except for the DC, CC, Treasurer and parent instructors who instruct all day at every rally, have been listed.
If you find you are unable to do your rostered duty, remember it is up to you to find a replacement. The roster will be included each month with the newsletter, so please make sure you know when you are rostered on.
As a general rule, it has been done in alphabetical order and by everyone having a turn it means that families should only be rostered on once throughout the year. Obviously camp is not included as everyone is required to do canteen duty throughout this week. Please read the roster and put it on your fridge!

ReminderJust a little reminder to members regarding the end of the pony club day. Each rally a committee member is nominated to stay
behind and close all the gates. Sometimes families are a little slow to get going, which means the person who is shutting the gate
has to wait. If you look like being the last few, please be mindful of this person and don’t be
too much longer.
Uniform
Don’t forget our uniform requirements. All riders must in the first instance, purchase
the full pony club uniform ie gold jumper, white shirt and gold tie. Even our youngest riders need to have this uniform as they need it
when they sit their D test at age 7 and for club presentation at camp.
The rugby jumper and active riding top are optional extras only.
Wet Weather PolicyRallies will NOT be cancelled in the morning
unless there is an electrical storm.Parents should not ring to find out if the
rally will go ahead, but if you decide you are not going to attend due to the wet weather,
please let Kylee know ASAP. The rally may be cancelled during the day if necessary.
In the case of an electrical storm, the DC and CC will confer. If the rally is cancelled
everyone will be notified by text by 9am which means the rally start time may need to be
delayed.

Canteen donationIt is proposed that we donate the canteen money to Peter Atkins for his selection to the London
Olympics - he has progressed to Badminton
Peter is the son of Owen and Sandy Atkins, brother to Steve and brother in-law to Berris and uncle of Hayley and Justin Atkins. There will also be cake and produce stall - his website is
www.runhennyrun.com - The donation will be from April canteen only.
Take the time to check out Henny’s (Owen’s horse) website, it is truely inspiring. You can donate personally towards Henny’s ambitions by purchasing products from his shop.
