Meet the members of the Ohio Chapter….

President Gail HornorPresident’s Message

I am honored to serve as the 2016-2018 Ohio NAPNAP. I am at your service so please let me know when you have any problems or concerns. I would like to share a bit about myself. I have been a pediatric nurse for 36 years and a PNP for 20 years. I have worked at Nationwide Children’s Hospital my entire career. I am originally a diploma grad – graduating from Mount Carmel School of Nursing in 1980. I have a BSN from Franklin University and a MSN from Wright State University. I completed a post-master’s PNP program at Ohio State University. After my youngest daughter graduated from high school I earned a DNP from OSU.

I have worked in the child abuse program which has evolved into the Center for Family Safety and Healing at NCH for over 20 years. The CFSH is a hospital based CAC. I work in two different clinics within the CAC one is an assessment clinic where children are seen when there is a concern for sexual or physical abuse. The other clinic that I work in is a primary care clinic for children in foster care. I also coordinate a team of sexual assault nurse examiners in our Emergency Department. I am passionate about issues relating to child maltreatment and will be sharing information with all of you. On a personal note I live in Hilliard Ohio. I have been married to Dave for 32 years. We have two daughters, Melissa 28 a third year surgical resident at OSU and Megan 26 a RN working at Denver Health in Denver, Colorado. Melissa will soon be moving to Chicago for two years to complete a research program. I love visiting the Denver area and would love to retire there once I have grandchildren (not holding my breath or anything).

Again, please let me know what you want from Ohio NAPNAP. Check our website and newsletters for information regarding mental health scholarships, research scholarship awards, bike helmet project, and service project stipends available to members. I just wanted to let you know a bit about me and now please let me know about you and what you need from Ohio NAPNAP.

Program Advisor Jill Smith

SAVE THE DATE: OHIO NAPNAP FALL CONFERENCEFRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2016

Ohio NAPNAP will introduce their new Fall Conference: a one day conference offering six CE. This event will be at the Hilton Garden Inn/ Twinsburg.

We will start the day with a business meeting and follow it with a day of speakers. It is our hope that this new idea will spark an interest in returning to Ohio NAPNAP for CE events. Our Fall conference has been poorly attended in the past, and we wanted to just focus on a one day event with a focus on CE. Come, learn and get home for dinner! Mark your calendars now for this inaugural event!

Spring 2017 OHIO NAPNAP will again host its pharmacology conference to include our mandatory law CE that will be held in the Columbus area. We will have more information to follow.

Ohio NAPNAP is proud to announce that we have been awarded a three year renewal for our chapter to offer continuing education events and award the CE for the same. If you would like to be involved in planning a continuing education event, please contact me at [email protected] or [email protected]

Clinical Practice Sharon Juszli

As clinical chair one of my responsibilities is to report all the wonderful activities our members do to promote the health and wellbeing of children in Ohio. Please contact me with any professional or personal efforts you are involved with so that others may be informed and inspired!

We had a record year for bike helmet distribution this spring and even had to hold a special board vote to approve additional funds to be able to meet all the helmet requests. Send me a blurb about how you used these helmets and NAPNAP’s bike safety program to educate your kids and if possible, include a photo of yourself in action.

Another responsibility of the clinical chair is to inform on clinical practice issues. After 20 years of practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner and nurse educator I am back to school working on the DNP degree. I thought it might be helpful to share with you several of the most useful things I have learned each semester that have proven helpful to my clinical practice. Hopefully these tips will help to make your workday a little easier and more fun!

What I learned in school today…….. By Sharon Juszli

The Evernote Scannable application for IPads and I phones. This app allows you to scan multi page documents, business cards, receipts, notes, recipes etc. fast and easy. You hold your device above what you want copied and your camera locates the document, crops the background and captures the image. The images are clear, easy to read and multipage documents are collated as one file. The documents are saved as PDF files and can easily be emailed or viewed on the laptop. I used this app to scan and email student evaluations directly to faculty, share research articles and power point conference notes with colleagues and to insert the cute little picture above that my daughter illustrated.

Google Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine that indexes scholarly, peer-reviewed, full text journal articles. Before becoming familiar with this search engine I was very hesitant to conduct a literature search while seeing patients. When clinical issues arose that required current evidence to help make decisions I did not feel like I had the time during the busy day to research the problem. Using academic search engines such as PubMed and CINAHL (though necessary for exhaustive searches for research and projects) are time consuming if you are not familiar with the correct search terms to yield fruitful information. Google Scholar puts high weight on words included in a title and citation counts, so your first search usually results in highly cited articles. What I have found is I get great, current articles quickly with just entering how I think the title of an article should be worded. Once you do your initial search you can narrow it down by using the descriptors on the left side of the page such as time and types of articles. The main criticism cited with Google Scholar is that new articles can be buried (Mathew Effect) as the most cited are prioritized and listed first, so I always try to narrow the search and visually scan all articles to not miss current ones. Use your web browser from you EMR and search for Google Scholar to get started. I now use Google Scholar quite frequently during my clinical day.

Re-energize your Influenza vaccine education efforts. I am sure many of you are spending a great deal

of time and energy providing education to the growing number of families who are refusing the primary set of vaccines. If you are like me, by the time Influenza vaccine season hits you are fairly exhausted and might be tempted not to spend the extra time educating influenza vaccine refusing families with healthy children about the importance of receiving this annual vaccine. I found the article listed below while looking for statistic operations and was properly reminded of why we spend the extra time. In summary: In this study 40% of children who died from Influenza had no high risk medical conditions. Children without high risk medical conditions (who died from influenza) were more likely to be less than 5 years old, die outside of the emergency room or hospital, die in less than or equal to 3 days of onset of illness and were more likely to have a co-existing bacterial infection. All children should receive annual Influenza vaccine.Blanton, L., Brammer, L., Dhara, R., Finelli, L., Fry, A.M., Hain, S., & Wong, K.K. (2013).
