FROM Mrs Dee-Anne Gerring,

Acting Principal...

THANK YOU The end of term is upon us and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during my time as Acting Principal. Thanks to all teachers, students, parents and helpers for contributing to the smooth running of the school. Special mention to Steve Field, our School Council President, who has been a constant support and sounding board on many occasions. Also to Gaylene Raymond and Terrie Nicholson, who work tirelessly in the office and around the school and have always been available for anything I’ve needed. I look forward to returning back to the Grade 2/3 class next term. Many thanks to Karen Kent for her hard work with the class this term. We now welcome Mr Paul Jeffreys to the position of Principal of Dunkeld Consolidated School and wish him all the best.

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY FRIDAY 28 JUNE AT 1.30PM

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF TIME!!!

Special Assembly will be held at 1.30pm on Friday to allow for a shortly extended time and early dismissal of 2.30pm. There will be many presentations including Class Captain reports, Aussie of the Month, 100% Attendance Certificates and each class will be doing a small musical performance. Ms Pauline Yule from The Old Bakery & Wild Plum Café Dunkeld, will be our guest presenter. Parents and community members are invited to attend this final assembly for Term 2.

LONG SERVICE LEAVE Mrs Gaylene Raymond will be taking Long Service Leave the first five weeks of Term 3, Monday 15

July –

Monday 16 August. She and Frank are packing up the

caravan and heading for warmer weather and a well-earned break up around Queensland and New South Wales! During this period, Terrie Nicholson will replace Gaylene in the office. We welcome Ally Gordon to the role of Teacher Aide on Mondays and Fridays to replace Terrie in the classroom. Helen Trahar will also work an extra day on Wednesdays during this time.

STAFFING / TIMETABLE With our new Principal and new semester next term, we have made some significant changes to the timetable. With an emphasis on uninterrupted Literacy and Numeracy sessions every day and specialist subjects scheduled for afternoons, this will provide a settled atmosphere for all students.

Of particular note is the changing of some staff members’ teaching days. Anne Gilbert will now work Tuesday to Friday as the Prep teacher. Jane Higgins will continue to work Monday to Thursday as the Grade 1 teacher. Ann Howard will now be the Prep teacher on a Monday and Grade 1 teacher on a Friday. Anne, Jane and Ann will work together to plan for the teaching of these grades. All classroom teachers will be sending home a new class timetable before the end of term.

PARKING A reminder that the roundabout is for bus access only of a morning and afternoon. It needs to be kept clear between 8.30am – 9.15am and 3.00pm – 4.00pm. Dropping off and picking up of students by car is to be done in the parking area outside the school gate at all times. This is for the safety of all children in and around the school. The school is aware that there are some issues with excess water in the table drain and insufficient parking on the outside of the school at times. We are in the process of requesting works from VicRoads. If any parents have had any issues or would just like to support our plight, please write a letter to the school outlining your concerns.

DUNKELD RURAL FIRE BRIGADE TRAINING AT OUR SCHOOL On Sunday the Dunkeld Rural Fire Brigade completed a training exercise at our school. They simulated a fire scenario originating in the kitchen area and had some smoke machines running to reflect a real fire. It was great to have the fire brigade doing some training at the school. They will be very prepared if we were ever unfortunate to have a fire at the school. Many thanks to James Haley for organising the training exercise.

BUSES Bus travellers received a note home recently to say they are permitted to bring a small hand held device (such as a DS or iPod) on the bus if they wish. Students who have been bringing a device, can be commended on their responsible use. Bus noise has reduced and we have had very good behaviour. A reminder to students that they need their parents’ permission to bring a device and parents set the rules on their days of use etc. Students can bring a book, colouring in book, crossword etc as an alternate to a device also.

MEDICATION Should your child need specific medication it must be delivered to a member of staff (Principal, Bursar or teacher). This medication should be in a correctly labelled pharmacy container with all relevant

3

information on it – student’s name, name of medication together with concentration and dosage of that medication. It will be cared for by the teacher.

OLIVE HARVEST On Sunday 23

June there was an olive harvest at Elaine

Schurmann’s property. Herman Jansen, Judy Warne, Steve Kennedy, Terrie Nicholson, Lucinda Peterson, Lisa McIntyre, Mrs Ann Howard, Trish Symes and children - Ella and Bonnie Jackson; Adam, Jesse and Sarah Symes; Anna Schurmann; Miranda McIntyre and I attended. First we harvested the olives, some people handpicked the olives and other people used rakes and the olives fell onto tarps, which were placed on the ground underneath the trees. Then we had to wash all of the olives in a big bucket of water. The third process was sorting out the olives. We had to throw out the green and wrinkly olives and keep the good ones. The next process was the longest and slowest which involved making a cut in the olives and putting them into salt. Some people took photos and videos of everyone who helped. Thank you to Mrs Elaine Schurmann who made us some lovely soup, sausage rolls and muffins for lunch. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped on Sunday. By Sophie Schurmann

From the Kitchen Garden… My sister, Maryann Jenkins, has kindly donated another painting for the SAKG Committee to raffle to help raise funds for purchasing kitchen equipment. The painting is on display at ‘The Old Bakery’ thanks again to the kindness of Pauline and Paul. The Old Bakery Dunkeld donates a percentage of all bread sales to the SAKG Program and we are very appreciative of this ongoing support. Paul invited Maryann to exhibit some of her works and they are also displayed at The Old Bakery. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the bakery or at the front office of the school for

AUSSIE FOOTY We have a break now until Wednesday 24 July. We will play at Myrniong against Hamilton and Alexandra College that afternoon. Each week a player from our Leadership Group is appointed Team Captain, taking responsibility for coin toss and addressing the two teams at the conclusion of the game. We have also had a specific focus each week, 'talking it up', 'team work' and 'run and carry' so far. The team is really coming together and performing very well. Great enthusiasm, disciplined tackles and team spirit. Our Rookie list is just bursting with up and coming talent, very exciting! Thanks to Shane Arnold for umpiring last week, and to Lorna McKenzie and Val Peters for oranges and glucose (snakes). THANK YOU Thank you to everyone for attending and making "The Lorax" movie night a great success. We raised a total of $540.00, which when generously matched by Mr Allan Myers, will be a total of $1080.00 towards the Dunkeld Community Centre fundraising appeal. Thank you also to Mr Ray Keilar of Fresha Juice, for donating the fruit boxes. We might just have another one next term! Penny Fraser and Shelley Darroch

George & Carolyn Fitzpatrick Olwyn Hogan Off the Rails Gallery Cee Blackwell Judy & Vanne Trompf Pat Learmonth Anonymous donations in the last fortnight

totalled $18,500. Which brings the total donations to date to $41,372.

Remember every dollar donated will be matched by Allan Myers.

Every little bit counts! Mary-Ann Brown Chairperson SERRA TERROR 2013 What a great weekend! The weather was perfect, the course challenging and yet again Maree Willey and her committee did a great job running this event for the 4

th

year. Maree and members of her committee presented a cheque for $20,000 to the Dunkeld Community Centre Appeal on Tuesday. This brings the total raised as part of the appeal to over $60,000. Mary-Ann Brown, Chairperson Dunkeld Community Centre Committee

DUNKELD PUBLIC LANDS COMMITTEE Caravan Park: We have ordered a coin operated industrial clothes drier. This will help us provide

residents with a better service. Our hunt for a cabin is close to being finalised. Gary and Mavis are having a well-deserved break. Memorial Park: It is interesting that the Shire of Southern Grampians is having a consultancy about public toilets. Yes, don’t laugh. The shire doesn’t like making decisions without consultancies. I would have thought that there are enough chiefs at the Shire to do their own background work. This could change the public toilet situation in Dunkeld. I am sure that the toilets in our Park are under threat. The Information Centre toilets are much newer. Do you care if we lose the Park toilets? Have you been asked for an opinion by the consultant? How safe will it be for children crossing the busy highway? Prustie and I have written to the Council and contacted all Councillors with our thoughts. If you are interested, contact the Council and Councillors. It will be too late after a decision is made. Salt Creek: Prustie and Smithy are “excited.” We went to a meeting last week and learnt about Conservation Volunteers. As part of the redevelopment of the Hall, Conservation Volunteers have become involved. We are getting a Community Support Officer in Dunkeld two days a week. This person arranges volunteers to work on projects in our town and district. The Bendigo Bank has supported this project. We thank them for their great help. This could be the best thing to happen to our district for many years. If you love your town and district, please support this project. Imagine Salt Creek cleaned up. There will be an information session on Tuesday 13

August, 6:30pm at the hall (barbecue provided). Watch the newsletter for full details. If you are interested in making our town and district better, please support this initiative. John Smith, President and John Prust, Secretary/Treasurer

The Dunkeld Community Centre Appeal is now $20,000 closer to target, from profit gained after the annual June long weekend hike. Thank you to the participants who supported Dunkeld by trudging 80km to raise these funds. Many have completed it more than once and some even 4 times!

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make the FOURTH Serra Terror hike a successful and safe event for Dunkeld. The cast of thousands are applauded below:

Australians would be unaware of the role played by residents of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia’s ANZAC legend. Lemnos was the main base for the landings and the main transport and supply harbour. It was where the ANZACs practised their lands and where the departed for Gallipoli. It was the place of rest and recuperation for sick and wounded ANZACs at the Australian hospitals staff by nearly 100 Australian nurses. The famed Australian AE2 submarine used

16

Lemnos as a harbour. It is the place where over 200 ANZACs remain in two war cemeteries. It is for those reasons that the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee has been formed in Melbourne – to ensure that this story is told, that it is part of Australia’s Centenary of ANZAC commemorations, and that it is appropriately memorialised in Australia and in Greece. The Committee has actively lobbied the Australian and Greek authorities to ensure Lemnos’ role is not forgotten. One of the Committee’s major projects is to erect a fitting memorial in Melbourne to the ANZAC soldiers and nurses who served on Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Peter Corlett OAM has been asked to design and construct the sculpture, with the possibility of a copy to be erected on Lemnos. This will require considerable fundraising to become a reality and they are seeking the support of the RSL, our Sub-Branches and individuals in raising awareness and funds for this worthy cause. Anyone seeking further information or wishing to assist in fundraising should contact the Committee Secretary, Mr Jim Claven on 0409 402 388 or email [email protected]¹

Dunkeld Soldiers Memorial Restoration Project: Cleaning and

restoration work on the Dunkeld Soldiers Memorial was completed earlier this year in April, in time for our ANZAC Day Dawn Service. Funding of $8,492.00 was received through the Department of Planning and Community Development’s ‘Restoring Community War Memorials Grants Program’. Mr Warren Steele from Yulecart carried out the work and the Dunkeld RSL Sub-Branch would like to acknowledge his high level of workmanship and expertise.

Meetings are not held during the winter months (June, July and August). Our next Guest Speaker Meeting will be held on Monday 2 September.

Museum Duty: The following volunteers are on Museum duty

Sunday 30 June Bill & Fay Gordon Sunday 7 July Beryl Gordon & Joyce Gordon Sunday 14 July John Kay & John Cuming Churches: From the early 1840’s travelling clergyman of

various denominations visited the settlement and held services in private houses and later the parlour of the Woolpack Inn. The first church to be built in Dunkeld was the bluestone Presbyterian church in 1865. It resulted from a combined effort by the citizens and was used by all denominations for services in the early years. An amazing record of service was set by William Young (1856-1932), who was church secretary for 52 years. He also served as a Shire Councillor for 24 years. The vestry was used as a police station after the police building was burnt down in the 1944 fires.

The Wesleyans (Methodists after 1902) started with a weatherboard building in 1872 and replaced it with a brick building in 1914. Rev W.J. Bottoms had active support from W.J. Laws, J. Taylor, W.P. Brown, T Ballinger, W. Mereweather and R. Woodburn during the demanding time. The Roman Catholic congregation has been served by priests from Hamilton since the 1840’s. Their first church was erected about 1880 and the present brick building was opened in 1912 by Dr. Higgins, Bishop of Ballarat. Saint Mary’s Anglican Church was built in 1881 from locally made bricks. The new memorial church was opened on 28 October 1961 by the Venerable R.G. Porter.¹

FROM THE LIONS DEN Locally things have been quiet but we are preparing for the changeover of office bearers, the installation of new members, and the presentation of awards at the next dinner meeting. Also we have done a lot of preparation for the Greek Night which will be held on Wednesday 31

July. The cost is $25.00 per person so if you can

attend please contact me on 5577 2460.

Farm Safe You will be aware that the Dunkeld Lions have the portfolio of Farm Safe for the region. We try and bring the dangers of farming to the notice of those involved in the primary industry. One of the real dangers on a farm are dams and creeks. The following is a story that happened in Tasmania. In one of the country cities of the north-east of Tasmania a young man was employed at the local sewerage farm to check that everything was working correctly at the weekends. On occasions his gir friend would accompany him and when the work was finished they would have a picnic. Unfortunately on this occasion the girl was walking around the bank and she slipped into the sewerage pond. The boyfriend straight away dived into save her but they were both drowned. They were interred together. Please be watchful of any children around any water storage.

GARDEN NOTES - JULY One important winter job in the garden is fruit tree pruning. The reasons for pruning are to keep the tree to a manageable size and shape, to ensure that there is a sturdy framework of branches in order to carry a heavy crop of fruit without limb breakage, and to provide plenty of fruiting wood for future crops. Some fruits have a tendency to have heavy crops one year then little or no crop in the following year, pruning will even out this trend, which means that you should have a reasonable crop each year (depending on seasonal factors). Incorrect pruning will not kill a tree, the worst you can do is to heavily reduce the crop. Most deciduous fruit trees are pruned to a ‘vase’ shape, this gives maximum use of sunlight, ease of picking and spraying and maximum strength to the branch structure. It is possible to train some types of trees to a ‘fan’ shape i.e. trained to grow flat against a wall or fence. The main concern of pruning is to remove dead or diseased wood, any ingrowing or broken branches and to thin out any overcrowded growth, also to select and train a leader growth at the end of each branch. Fruit may set on current spring growth, or wood formed the previous year, or on fruiting spurs which may bear for several years. As a general rule, peaches, nectarines and apricots produce on one year old wood, whereas plums, pears, apples and cherries produce on fruiting spurs (although some variation may occur). You should use clean, sharp secateurs (a pruning saw for larger cuts) making all cuts with the least possible damage to surrounding shoots and bark, and to cut as close as possible (but not too close) to a plump, healthy bud. Any cuts over about 20-30mm diameter should be sealed and all prunings gathered up and burnt or carted to the rubbish tip. During winter, a greenish yellow mossy growth often becomes visible on the limbs of deciduous trees, especially older trees. This is known as lichen and although it will not kill your trees, it will weaken them and make them look rather unsightly. Lime Sulphur applied as a spray during winter will give good

control. A good spring feed will also help to strengthen your trees. Happy Gardening - Stephen Hughan
