PinPoint Cash Back Rewards is another new feature we’re offering. This rewards program delivers personalized offers for cash back on purchases you make every day. All you need to do is activate your offers via online or mobile banking, make your purchase, and receive cash back rewards. No need to clip coupons or collect points. Gardening and Herb Basket SeminarWEDNESDAY • MAY 23

Find your new favorite greenhouse and support local business. This garden center offers a variety of annuals and perennials. Join us to create an herb basket and have all your gardening questions answered from the experts at Busy Bee. Using Native Plants in LandscapingWEDNESDAY • MAY 9

Join us for this seminar by Jo Anna Hebberger, PhD, Plant Ecologist, which will focus on the benefits of using native plants in your landscaping. She’ll discuss the beauty of the plants for your landscapes as well as how our personal landscapes are interconnected with many other things. What you plant in your yard can have an effect far beyond your small patch of land.

Tour of Meredith Test Gardens and Pappajohn Sculpture ParkFRIDAY • JUNE 29

Join us for a tour of the Meredith Test Garden, which is adjacent to the headquarters of Better Homes & Gardens’ parent company, Meredith Corporation. The Test Garden serves as a display garden, a testing ground for plants, and a photography studio for the company’s publications and websites. After an introduction and guided tour, you will be able to stroll through the garden on your own.

The second part of our tour will be of the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, which features artwork by 22 of the world’s most celebrated artists. We will split into smaller groups where a docent will accompany each group and give history and background on each piece of artwork.

John Deere Des Moines Works* and Albaugh Chevy Car Collection ToursTHURSDAY • MAY 31

Our day will start at John Deere Des Moines Works, located in Ankeny, Iowa. This 90-minute tour will take us through campus buildings where you will see various stages of manufacturing of cotton harvesters and spreaders. Upon the conclusion of the tour, you will have time to visit the onsite store for a little shopping. The group will have lunch together at Palmer’s Deli (at your own expense) and conclude our afternoon with a tour of Dennis Albaugh’s private car collection, which includes nearly 150 Chevy convertibles spanning several decades.

Limited to 50 attendees. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Time: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Location: John Deere Des Moines Works, 825 Irvinedale Dr., Ankeny Turn into the driveway at the stoplight. Enter through the doors to the right of the flagpoles.

*John Deere tour details: Must by 13 years old, no video cameras or cell phones allowed, no sandals or open-toed shoes. No exceptions. Please note that we will be outside for 20 minutes of the tour regardless of weather conditions. Please dress appropriately.

A guided tour bus will take us to several areas of Des Moines including the Jordan House in West Des Moines, Terrace Hill, Sherman Hill Neighborhood, the Wallace House, Western Gateway, Downtown Des Moines, East Village, and the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates.

Space is limited. Please register by September 15, 2018.

A nine-year bull market has produced a large number of 401(k) millionaires. Recently, financial services company Credit Suisse reported 1.1 million Americans crossed that line in 2017 alone. According to a Time article, this increase brought the total number of U.S. millionaires to 15,356,000, or approximately one in every 20 Americans. This means the U.S. has more millionaires than any other country (by far) – even though we rank 21st for median wealth, along with Austria and Greece.

As a wise man once said, “Making money is easy; keeping it is hard.” So these new millionaires must avoid common pitfalls to preserve their wealth. The biggest mistake they can make is emulating wealthy individuals who joke about spending their kids’ inheritance on second homes, luxury cruises and expensive automobiles.

Some wealthy people can afford to splurge in these ways without endangering their security. But individuals who attain $1 million need to remember that figure doesn’t go as far as it once did, and today’s life expectancies are longer. According to Market Watch, $1 million is likely to last the average retiree 25½ years in the most favorable state based on cost of living: Mississippi. For a retiree living in Hawaii, it could be depleted in a little over 13 years.*

Other emotional decisions can also crack a nest egg. It’s generally unwise to buy stocks based on gut feelings or sell due to negative predictions. Preretirees or early retirees with million-dollar portfolios who overly fear risk may lose ground if their conservative investments don’t keep pace with inflation. On the flip side, the euphoria of hitting the million-dollar mark can produce impulses to help the less fortunate, lend money to relatives or treat friends frequently. It’s nice to be generous, but it’s wise to prioritize and plan gifts.
