Stratford Circus played host to the

Newham Choral Festival Project at the end of last term with the

L iteracy Through Vocal Performance collaboration between

Newham Council and Living Song.

The project involved 16 Primary schools across Newham. Two Young

Artists, Amina Gichinga and Nathan Davonte mentored teachers and

pupils throughout the project. Jane Wheeler from Living Song led the

initial teacher training and warmed up

the 300 children for their performance, contributing to the

strong community atmosphere.

At Elmhurst the topic chosen was

“season” and the children created a

descriptive piece of writing. The

team then worked on how to perform this piece of poetry as a

group using choral speaking techniques and song-writing, even

adding instruments to the costume.

For Ranelagh, the project was a chance for nine children from the

school’s Intervention Programme to test the skills that they had been

practicing since moving to Ranelagh from countries all over the world.

The pupils introduced their song,

saying: "This song is dedicated to our Intervention teachers who

changed our lives. We, the children, wrote this song. It is called Independent, we hope you enjoy it."

The Intervention Programme

provides daily numeracy and

literacy studies that enable the pupils to rapidly catch up with their

peers, along with interesting activities to improve confidence,

communication skills, creativity and

independence.

The Ranelagh pupils

A year since the Gallions Music

Centre opened its doors for the first time and the school has

much to show for it.

A normal school week at Gallions

includes Kodaly-inspired Musicianship

lessons for every class (nursery to Year 6), strings lessons for every

child in Years 2-6, Singing Assemblies, and Music Interaction

for children with Special Educational Needs, not to mention rehearsals

for two orchestras, two choirs and

Bass Attack. The children have opportunities to perform regularly

both in school and at venues around the country. Music has

always been embedded into school

life at Gallions.

Over the years, as the school grew

in size, the space available for music-making came under increasing pressure

but the importance placed on music at

Gallions ensured that a solution was

found: The building of a Music Centre enabling music provision to

develop, offering pupils ongoing high quality music education.

Last term, Gallions held an official

launch event to celebrate all they had achieved since the opening of

the new facility. It was also an opportunity to thank all those who

supported the project both through financial donations and their time

and expertise. Representatives from

local primary schools were at the launch, alongside music services

and national music organisations.

The audience were treated to

performances from the Senior

Orchestra, Senior Choir, Bass Attack and Vivace Strings. One of Gallions’

Year 6 cellists spoke about her experience of Music at Gallions and

Paul Broadhurst, a trustee for the

Gallions Music Trust, spoke about

the transformative impact of music on his life and why what Gallions

does is so important.

The Gallions Catering Club were

also on top form, providing a

selection of vegetarian canapés for the guests. During the term they

had been busy designing the menu and practicing preparation so that

on the night they confidently told guests about the ingredients they

had used, the processes involved in

making the food and their experiences of being in the kitchen.

The pupils were a credit to the school throughout the entire

evening, impressing guests with the

level of professionalism both from the musicians and Catering Club.

The future promises to be an exciting time for Gallions music.
