The Infants Department are now in the third year of the Action Plan. The funded project has enabled staff to participate in professional learning to enhance their teaching and assessment strategies in Numeracy and Literacy. It has also provided opportunities to resource the infants classes with both literacy and numeracy resources, giving the students a greater learning experience. Since the project began, staff have noted major improvements in Phonemic Awareness which is a strong indicator of future reading success. They have also seen notable improvement in the students’ ability to identify phonemes or the sounds that leers make in words. This year staff have worked on implementing the Get Reading Right program which gives students opportunity to practise reading and spelling daily. The emphasis on blending in each lesson has proven successful in increasing students’ word aack skills. Next week’s Green Room session at 2:45pm will look at blending and segmenting and give some insight into the Get Reading Right program. The Numeracy aspect of the project focuses on teaching problem solving strategies and numeracy skills that enable students to learn every day skills and reasoning skills. These skills will help students learn to be good stewards of God’s resources. The problem solving activities also enable students to learn how to question and reason, think logically and communicate. There is a strong emphasis on students’ verbally expressing their understandings and strategies used when solving problems. These mathematical thinking skills provide students with the theoretical framework to approach questions of faith and future decisions. Devote yourselves to prayer, with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Colossians 4:2 Pray for the Falconer family as they grieve the loss of their mother, Kathie. Pray that they would be strengthened encouraged and continue to be faithful to God in everything that they do. Give thanks for Kathie's strong faith in Jesus and the wonderful example she has been to so many. Pray for our Stage 5 students as they sit examinations next week. Pray that they will remain focused and for good results for their effort. Pray for those of our staff and students who are unwell. Give thanks for our school Board and Association and all the work they do. If they're sick, keep them home Your child wakes up feeling unwell-what do you do? Is it serious enough to keep them home? Do you have a back-up plan in case they do need to stay home from school? Do they have something someone else could catch? If you have a child that is feeling under the weather, then school might not be the best place for them- no one else wants what they might have! Germs can easily spread to other students, to staff and to families. The Too Sick For School? chart from school a to z website (www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au) will help answer your questions about common childhood illness and how long sick kids need to miss school.PLEASE NOTE: This information has been supplied by NSW Health and is not intended to replace a visit to your doctor if anyone in your family is unwell.

18 May 2015 Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Expressions of Interest Barista Training Course

We are pleased to offer a new Barista Training Course, for Year 9 to 12 students or adult members of our community such as parents, to be held on site at the Tongarra Campus, thanks to our professional cafe standard coffee machine. A number of staff members have expertise and will be assisting: Mrs. Joy Evans - our hospitality teacher, who is qualified to deliver Certificate II in Hospitality and Food Services. Mrs. Rowena Cornale - who is qualified to teach Food and Beverages. Mrs. Sarah Rodwell - who has been a professional barista for five years. Mr Greg Cleall - a previous professional barista and coffee aficionado. Mr Stephen Babbage - who has been taught to deliver this course and is a self confessed 'coffee snob'. This course would be beneficial for those interested in seeking part-time employment in the food service industry and would give them a distinct advantage above those without training in this area. Students will receive a certificate demonstrating their ability to serve coffees. This course would also be an advantage to anyone who simply wishes to know how to make professional standard coffees.

Upon successful completion of the course each participant will receive an industry recognised certificate.

The course will discuss the farming of the coffee bean, ethical issues involved in that process, how it is best served, how to use a coffee machine, and how to use coffee making as a tool to encourage gospel conversations. PTO

Page 4: newsletter - Amazon S3s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/resources.farm1... · Literacy. It has also provided opportunities to resource the infants classes with both literacy and numeracy

The course will be run in small groups of 10 to 12 students at a time. The small numbers per course allows practical experience on the various kinds of coffee machines and other associated equipment and processes (such as grinders, application of food laws etc.). Attendees will learn how to make various types of coffees including catering to various requests from customers.
