Do you know that there is an incredible duck splash that will be held on Saturday, October 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Lake Glendale at Verdugo Park, 1621 Canada Blvd, Glendale, CA? The Quacktivities will include games, food, preliminary Splash race heats at 10:30 a.m. and the final race is at 1:45 p.m. The benefit in joining is that the Splash proceeds will help numerous youth oriented non-profit organizations, programs, activities, and schools throughout the city of Glendale and other communities of Los Angeles County. This is exciting! How can we be part of this? Well, let us adopt ducks and become Duck Buddies. Adopt your ducks by making a $5.00 donation per duck or $25 per Quack Pack of 5 ducks. You can win a lot of prizes too ($10K, $1K, $500, iPad Mini Retina, and more). Your support if you adopt 9 ducks would pay for a child car safety seat donation to a needy family with installation and instructions on proper usage to protect a child’s life. If you adopt 20 ducks, that will provide a 3 month supply of rice and beans for 9 homeless families in Southern California. Every duck adopted helps in a significant way towards improving the lives of needy children, senior citizens and veterans in our communities. We will send you the Duck Adoption Forms through the Wednesday Family envelope and each adoption form has your lucky duck number. By the way, these are rubber ducks and you can win big bucks! For more information, please visit: www.ducks4kids.org

The ducks are coming. HFGS are ready to become Duck Buddies!!!

ITBS Testing Reminders for HFGS Families

Measurement and assessment of student learning in the area of academics is a significant component of

our Catholic educational program. It is on-going and multifaceted. Students’ comprehension of

concepts, their ability to solve problems, their degree of retention, and their repertoire of needed skills

to succeed scholastically are carefully monitored. One of the many tools the school uses to evaluate

student learning is a norm referenced test, such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).

A norm referenced test is a unique form of assessment that gives you and the school staff information

other tests cannot provide. It allows for measuring the performance of a student or a group of students

against a national sample, called the norming population. Keep in mind, however, that this “once-a-year

norm referenced test” may not accurately reflect what your child knows or does not know. That is why

schools look at all learning indicators to evaluate student progress.

All students in grade two through eight will be taking the complete battery of the ITBS Achievement

Test. Students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 7 will take an additional 1-hour test, called the CogAT. This test

sheds some light on your child’s reasoning and problem solving abilities. The results allow you and the

teachers to access a set of strategies that will strengthen these abilities.

The greatest benefit of the ITBS is that it allows the school principal and teachers to look at the overall

performance of your child in light of the school’s curricular goals and programs. It helps the teachers

identify curricular strands that are well mastered or must be re-taught, thus preventing gaps in learning.

It also helps the school select the best instructional approaches and materials.

In order to prepare for the entire week standardized testing, please make sure that your child…

Had enough sleep the night before each testing day or is well rested.

Had a good breakfast before coming to school.

Will come to school on time and will not be absent during the week; thus, any medical or dental appointment made prior will be re-scheduled.

Will know the importance of completing the test; reading and following the teacher’s instructions; will bubble in all answers on the answer sheet properly.

Thank you.

Lorenzo Ruiz - The First Filipino Saint

Canonized by Pope John Paul II in Rome on Oct. 18, 1987, St. Lorenzo Ruiz, whose feast day is Sept. 28, was martyred during the persecution of Christians in Japan during the 17th century while on a missionary expedition. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint. He is also the first Filipino martyred for the Christian Faith. Lorenzo Ruiz was a layman, married, and had two sons and a daughter. Born in Binondo, Manila, about 1600's, he was educated in the school of the Dominicans there. He served as an altar boy and later was a helper and clerk-sacristan in the church of Binondo. He was a member of the Confraternity of the Rosary. He made his living probably as a calligrapher, one who renders documents in beautiful penmanship for private or official use. To be sure, that work denoted an accomplished and educated person, especially at a time when many an illustrious personage was far from excelling in this art. An adverse event made him leave the Philippines in 1636. When he was in his late twenties or early thirties, he became involved or was accused of being involved in a criminal case, the circumstances of which are far from clear. Whether he was involved or not, one thing was clear, he was afraid that, as a consequence of a trial or mistrial, he might be given a death sentence. Upon landing in Japan where Christians were being persecuted, he was arrested and imprisoned together with his companions. He underwent inhuman tortures and valiantly confessed his Christian Faith. Refusing to renounce his Faith, he told his

executioner that he was ready to die for God and give himself for many thousands of lives if he had them. On September 27, 1637, he was hung from a gallows by his feet, his body falling into a pit. After two days of agony, he died of bleeding and suffocation. His body was cremated and the ashes thrown into the sea. He and fifteen companions, martyred in the same persecution, were beatified by Pope John Paul II in Manila on February 18, 1981 and elevated to full honors of the altar by canonization on October 18, 1987 in Rome. Their feast day is on September 28th. Read more on: http://www.catholic.org/saints

For our Scripture Meditation for the Day

God is generous in opening the doors of his kingdom to all who will enter, both those who have labored

a life-time for him and those who come at the last hour. While the reward is the same, the motive for

one's labor can make all the difference. Some work only for reward. They will only put as much effort in

as they think they will get back. Others labor out of love and joy for the opportunity to work and to

serve others. The Lord calls his disciples to serve God and neighbor - his heavenly kingdom and our

earthly community - with generosity and joy. Do you perform your work and responsibilities with

cheerfulness and diligence for the Lord's sake? And do you give generously to others, especially to those

in need of your care and support?

"Lord Jesus, may I serve you and my neighbor with a glad and generous heart, not looking for how much I can get but rather looking for how much I can give."

Many amazing things are happening at Holy Family Grade School. We hope to give you more

and feature other grade levels in our next Newsletter.

Happy Catechetical Sunday to you ALL!
