From the PrincipalFrom the PrincipalFrom the PrincipalFrom the Principal Cross Country Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the Interschool Cross Country on Thursday, May 28. I have received many positive comments about the great behaviour and sportsmanship you all displayed. A huge thank you also to the parents who very kindly supported our students on the day. Reports Student reports will be available for collection from school on Monday, June 29. Primary reports can be collected from classroom teachers in your child’s classroom. Secondary reports can be collected from Form teachers in the library. Wagin DHS will be reporting using Australian Curriculum in History, Science, Math-ematics and English; all students from Pre-Primary to Year 10 will receive a grade relevant to their achievement. Going from Good to GREAT How can Wagin District High School move from being a good school to being a GREAT school? There are many things we already do to ensure this happens, such as: Involving student councillors in decision making Involving school council members in decision making Ensuring staff focus on improving student results; including academic and behaviour Being supportive of families, students, staff and community; and welcoming to visitors, new families and new

staff . There are many positives about our school; however, we also need to listen to everyone, give everyone an

opportunity to be involved and continually Aim High. Why not ‘get on the bus’ and be part of the journey. If you have ideas, questions, suggestions about how we can be recognised as GREAT please share them. Join P&C or School Council, volunteer in your child’s classroom, talk to your child’s teachers, talk to the school administration team, and be positive when you are talking about your child’s school. If we all focus on the positives and work together to find solutions to issues our children and young people can concentrate on Aiming High. The next P&C meeting is on Monday, July 15 at 12:30pm in the School Library, please come along. The next School Council Meeting is on Tuesday, July 23 at 3:30pm in the School Library.

Super Readers Congratulations to the following students who have reached milestones in their Home Reading: Mikayla, Cole, Penny, Oliver, Vincent, Mitchell, Nathan, Natalia, Ava, La’Trell, Maddison and Claire. Well done!! It is fantastic to see your enjoyment and enthusiasm growing daily for reading for pleasure.

Bike and Scooter Safety Parents/carers, please have a chat with your children about how to ride bikes and scooters safely to and from school There have been several near misses lately with students riding across the intersections near the school. Students who ride bikes are required to wear a helmet. Students are not permitted to ride bikes or scooters in the school grounds.

Uniforms Students are expected to wear school uniform to school. Leggings that are worn under skirts/shorts/dresses are to be navy. The Uniform Shop is open every Friday morning between 8:30 and 10:30am. Wearing school uniform builds school identity and spirit and keeps clothing expenses at a reasonable level for our families. This term has seen a large number of students being committed to our extra curricular programs including country week, cross country and carnivals. We have also been working collaboratively to ensure that all students are striving to achieve their best at school, this means we are expecting the students to complete work to a high standard and are supporting them to do so. The Hospitality students have been working through the formal menu and researching and cooking foods for each course; the Health Education students were involved in show casing their learning to the younger

primary students by presenting a forum on the truth about fad diets; the Year 9 and 10 English students have

been working on Shakespearian monologues and thoroughly enjoying the challenge of mastering the language; Maths students have been learning about the area of components of a circle; the Year 8s have

been learning about the Black Death in History, and how it was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people.; Year 7 students are

currently studying Ancient Egypt in alignment with the Australian Curriculum and have been mummifying oranges. There have been some outstanding achievements from these students. All secondary students were treated to an experience of listening to a visiting author on Friday, 29 May. Reputable West Australian author Sasha Wasley presented her book ‘The Seventh’ to the students and answered questions on how to be a published author. Thank you to Mr Rrahim Cervoj for organising this event for our secondary students. For Year 10 parents: The forms sent home for subject selection for Narrogin SHS will need to be returned to school for discussion and processing. Career Information Design an Ad Enter the West Australian’s Design an Ad competition for a chance to win great prizes. Each participating company will select two primary and two secondary winners, who will each receive a $100 cash prize. This term, Mr Hall’s Year 2/3 class has looked at fractions in Maths. As a practical exercise, the class decid-ed to use what they had learnt and applied their knowledge of fractions to make pizza. This involved measuring ingredients using cup measurements, dividing the dough evenly for group members, and the very best part - eating the finished product!

Survey for Parents and Kids REMINDER!

Be food allergy aware Australia has one of the highest rates of people with food allergies in the world- and this rate is growing. Currently, 1 in 10 babies are born with a food allergy. The only way to remove the risk of the allergic reaction is to avoid the food that causes it. An allergic reaction occurs when a person’s immune system responds to a food protein that it mistakenly believes is harmful. Chemicals are released into the body which trigger symptoms that can be life threatening. Symptoms of food allergy can include hives, swollen lips, face and eyes, tongue, abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing and a sudden drop in blood pressure. Severe allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis, can be fatal if not treated immediately. Nine foods trigger 90% of food allergy reactions in Australia - cow’s milk, egg, peanut, tree nut, sesame, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. Emergency first aid for anaphylaxis • Lay the person flat, do not stand or walk. If breathing is difficult, allow to sit. • Give the adrenaline autoinjector without delay. (Make a note of the time it was given.) • Ring an ambulance – Dial 000 • Stay with and reassure the person. Do not allow the person to walk at any time. • Give another adrenaline autoinjector if no improvement after 5 minutes • If the person loses consciousness and there are no signs of breathing, begin CPR. Monitoring in a hospital is required for 4-6 hours, even if symptoms improve. For further information contact your school nurse or visit: Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia – Food Allergy Awareness Week http://www.foodallergyaware.com.au/ (contains school resources including craft, colouring activities, recipe ideas and important information).
