On the 31st of May each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World No Tobacco Day.
It is a day that highlights the health risks associated with tobacco use and
advocates for effective policies to reduce its consumption. Tobacco use is the
second cause of death globally and is currently responsible for killing one in
every ten adults worldwide. Apart from our local tobacco awareness campaigns held by members around the world, IPSF also strives to be a strong advocate on the international front. Among our various initiatives, the IPSF and WHO Joint Statement on Tobacco Control is an example of how we are constantly trying to bring increased awareness to the global community.
The Tobacco Alert Campaign has grown to be one of the most popular initiatives of the Federation. Many of these campaigns target a younger audience (e.g. high school students), but there are also others that aim to educate IPSF members on how to effectively communicate public health messages to different target audiences and to use new initiatives to develop effective and informative presentations.

Ideas for campaigns:• Ask as many
people you can and start brainstorming as
a team.
•Make a street campaign, tell people about the day by showing some campaign materials.
•Make a song to remind people to stop smoking and sing it on your campaign.
•Take ashtray with water in it, bring
it to smokers and ask him/her to put the smoke out there.
•Make it one day without smoke, give them candy or gum.
• Tell people about the Tobacco Alert Campaign by making a presentation in a workshop or spread the news by social media.
•Collaborate with the anti-tobacco organization or other community organizations in your country.
“One of the great regrets of my life is that I smoked. If I could say anything to anybody starting out in life it would be, ‘Whatever you do, don’t smoke. I have
had to recover from that and been lucky that I have been able to stop.”
Bill Nighy, star in the UK on his 30-year smoking habit
