Local (WGSS) + District (SD35) Scholarships
The Langley School District Foundation administers funds collected from various individuals, service clubs and other donors. Awards are available to Grade 12 students proceeding to post-secondary education. The scholarships in this fund are divided into two categories: (1) District Awards – open to any Grade 12 student in SD35 who applies and meets the criteria. The winner of each award is selected based on highest GPA which satisfies the criteria established by the donor; and, (2) Local Awards – open to students who attend a particular Langley high school (e.g. WGSS). The WGSS Scholarship Committee
considers the donors criteria then leadership service, financial need and academic. When students complete the Local/District Scholarship Application, they are considered for all awards in both categories. District (SD35) Scholarships There are approximately 40 District scholarships available to students in SD35 through the District Scholarship Fund. A listing of these awards is on pages 10 and 11 of the District Scholarship Handbook, which is available on the District Scholarship Website. Last year, 15 WGSS students won awards for a total of $16,550. Be aware that the list is subject to change as an up-dated list is not available until March 2018 when donors have confirmed their commitments for the year. Local (WGSS) Scholarships There are approximately 34 scholarships available only for Walnut Grove Secondary graduates. Many of these scholarships have multiple winners. Last year, 60 students won scholarships for a total of $35,200. The list is available on the WGSS Website. Be aware that the list is subject to change as an up-dated list is not available until March 2018 when donors have confirmed their commitments for this year Opportunity to Provide Scholarships As a member of the Walnut Grove Community, we encourage you to think about whom you could nudge to consider participating in the scholarship program. Generally the scholarships are $300 – $500 and income tax receipts are available. Donors specify the criteria – for example: financial need, participation in a particular course of study or pursuing a particular occupational area, etc. If you are aware of someone who might wish to contribute before the end of this tax year, they can be in touch with Susan Cairns at [email protected] or 604-532-1464. You can also contact Mr. Moorthy or Ms. Kifiak. They can provide more information about how the scholarship fund is administered and assists WGSS students (and the graduates of SD35).

Winners + Claiming Awards Information
If students win a Local or District or District/Authority Award, they will receive an invitation to come with their parent(s) to our Awards Recognition Afternoon on Thursday, May 31st at 3:45 pm in our school cafeteria. At that time they will learn what scholarships they have won.
Winners of Local and District Scholarships must redeem the scholarship within two years of graduation. This is done by providing proof of enrolment or a tuition receipt and completing a Scholarship Claim Form, which is submitted by the student to our counselling department who in turn forwards the completed form to the Langley School Foundation.
Winners of the District/Authority Award have five years to use their tuition voucher which they will receive in the mail from the Ministry of Education in November after graduation.
StudentTranscript
Service (STS)
To access the service, students will go to the Ministry of Education’s transcripts and certificates website at www.StudentTranscripts.gov.bc.ca. Please note that all students must register for a BC Government account (a BCeID). After registering for a BCeID, students follow the system prompts and register for STS. Finally, they log in to the StudentTranscripts Service using the BCeID. From a student’s STS Dashboard, they are able to make post-secondary institution selections, view their transcript and assessment results, and send transcripts to post-secondary institutions and other third parties. Using StudentTranscripts, current students are able to select if they want to send a transcript in the spring (interim - May), and/or when final marks are complete (late-July).

Veterinary Technology
Vet Techs are an important part of the animal health care team, and Douglas offers the only public training program in the Lower Mainland. Students learn topics such as medical, surgical, anaesthesia, dentistry, and radiology. Offered at Douglas’ Coquitlam campus, the program accepts 30 students every September, and they must be 18 by the program start date. Interested students should chat with veterinarians or vet technicians to learn more about the profession, as well as obtain experience in advance of applying to the program, preferably in a vet clinic with as many species as possible. Applications for Fall 2018 must be submitted by January 15, 2018. Interested students can sign up for an information session and get a tour of the Vet Teaching Clinic. Hospitality Management
Douglas has added an exciting restaurant management simulation exercise to their Food and Beverage Cost Controls course. This joins to the two other computerized management simulation exercises for hotels that Douglas is already running in their courses. Students can expect good work experience opportunities, as we continue to have a close relationship with local hotel chains such as Fairmont and Sandman, and the student-run HIRE Fair attracts 20-30 hotels and restaurants each year. Students who complete the PC1 program at WGSS will receive transfer credit to one of Douglas’ 1000-level hospitality courses. There are several financial awards available for hospitality students, including one for those interested in pursuing further studies at a designated university.
Therapeutic Recreation (TR)
Therapeutic Recreation practitioners help improve the health and well-being of people with disabilities through leisure activities. Students get hands-on experience through local short-term practicum placements, as well as long-term internships throughout North America and globally in Uganda. Why choose Douglas for TR? Douglas’ bachelor’s degree grads have a 95% success rate on the American-based National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Recreation Specialists.
