The Machane Miami Herald The Week Past: BOYS DIVISION The Boys Division enjoyed Asia week as they created delectable candy sushi dishes and stayed hydrated with a spirited game of Asia Pong. Then, in Karate they learned the ancient arts of kung fu and tai chi de- fensive kicking. On Wednesday, the boys travelled to Oleta Park for an amazing beach day! The boys had their own private area and enjoyed water kickball, making sandcastles, and swimming in the wave-less bay water. The bunks also enjoyed the “winnings” from the previous week’s auction as they cashed in with prizes that included a bus tour around campus, a trip to Skoops, a popcorn machine for the bunk and slurpees. Friday will feature an exciting staff basketball game on the Rohr middle school rooftop court. GIRLS DIVISION The Girls Division came dressed for success as many girls dressed up in Japanese garb for Tuesday. They then had a fantastic time painting chopsticks, making Chinese fans, and creating stunning cherry blos- som paintings. On Monday in Gymnastics by Meira Wunsch, the camp- ers perfected their form for basic floor skills such as forward rolls, backwards rolls, handstands and cartwheels. They also had fun try- ing to do backbends and kickovers, running roundoffs and more! Leah Klagge’s Art Class involved sketching and then painting Japanese Kio fish. The campers learned how to break down their subject into simple shapes and then building upon those shapes to create an intricate final product. Tuesday and Wednesday’s Dance classes with Estee Gross- man featured dances to acapella music and the girls had fun freeze dancing to different styles in each round of the game. Thursday’s trip to TY Park was awesome! The girls set up at their own pavilion and enjoyed great activities like water balloon baseball, Capture the Flag and Elbow Tag. JUNIORS DIVISION The Juniors landed in Asia Week and had a superb time making Chinese hats and Chinese lanterns. They then made flying fish and had a chop- stick hunt where they created Chinese writing and pictures. Thurs- day’s entertainment continued their splashing worldwide trip with a comedy Pirate show! In Estee Grossman’s Dance class, the Juniors got to sing solos to their favorite songs while playing toy musical instru- ments and dancing to acapella music. In Morah Susan’s Kindergarten, they made butterfly paintings after reading a book about butterflies. In Morah Heidi’s Kindergarten, the campers learned the letters of the Chinese alphabet and made those letters out of Popsicle sticks. Morah Leah’s Pre-K class traced their own hands and then discussed all the mitzvos that one can do with their hands! Morah Ilana’s Pre-K had song day where they learned new songs. In Morah Chaya’s Nursery, the 3-year old’s enjoyed tactile activities like building with Playdough and playing with shaving cream. Fasten you seatbelts as we take off from Oriental land,With our hats and fans all decorated, we look so grand. Our bags are packed with our sushi treats--oh so delish,

And we had so much fun decorating our flying fish.

With our cute little panda companion all black and white,And a Chinese lantern to shine through the night.

The pirate show was full of fun and glee,With a talking alligator that was super friendly.

דבר תורה At the end of last week’s ה רש ה and at the beginning of this week’s פ רש we learn about the tremendous act ,פof ת נפש ס performed by (self-sacrifice) מסיר אל He saw a leader of .פינח ל ישר ה doing a horrible כל ביר ס and ,ע פינחrefused to allow such a thing to go unpunished. After checking with בינו ס ,משה ר took matters into his own hands פינחand killed the people doing the ה ביר and ended the horrible plague that had קידוש ה' This created a tremendous .עalready killed thousands of אל .בני ישר What makes a person a hero? What is the type of person we should all respect and look up to? Is it the person who hits a baseball the farthest, or who throws a ball the hardest? Is it the person who wears the fanciest clothing, or who has the best stuff at home? Who should we respect?

The story of ס ס .gives us a great example of what type of behavior we should respect פינח did not do the פינחpopular thing. What ס ס .did was dangerous to himself, as he could have been killed פינח stood up to a leader and פינחdeclared that he was behaving incorrectly. ס did the right thing, even though it wasn’t the easy or popular thing פינחto do. Sometimes, we might be together with our friends when we see that they are planning to do something that isn’t right. We have to decide if we will take the easy route and join them, or take the more difficult route and refuse to participate. It might not be popular, and we might even suffer as a result. But we can learn from ס כות will reward us with ה' to do the right things, and פינח !more wonderful than we could ever imagine בר

Questions to ask your child. 1. What happened at the end of last week’s פרשה? The nations of מואב and מדין convinced בני ישראל to worship idols and to marry מואב and מדין women. 'ה sent a horrible plague that killed thousands of בני ישראל. 2. What did פינחס do? He killed זמרי, the נשיא of שמעון, who was involved in the .caused the plague to stop ה' ,did that פינחס When .עבירות 3. What reward did פינחס receive? אהרן Although he was a grandson of .כהן was made a פינחס he was not included in the ,אלעזר הכהן and a son of הכהןoriginal כהן appointments because only אהרן, his sons, and future grandsons were made כהנים. Since פינחס was already alive at the time, he wasn’t made a כהן then. But now he became a כהן. 4. Which nation was משה commanded to attack next? .to sin בני ישראל as punishment for their causing ,מדין 5. Why was a new census (counting of the people) made in this week’s פרשה? It has been 39 years since the census in פרשת במדבר, and לארץ ישרא are now ready to enter and inherit בני ישראל . Everyone from the previous count died already in the desert, except for כלב and יהושע, and new people were born.

6. How many total people were counted? 601,730 (last time it was 603,550). 7. What was the complaint of the 5 wise daughters of ?צלפחדTheir father died in the desert and they had no brothers. They were concerned that their family wouldn’t get a portion to inherit in משה .ארץ ישראל consulted with 'ה and taught them the laws of inheritance, including the law that daughters inherit their father’s portion if there are no sons. 8. After this, what did משה ask from 'ה? משה appoint a suitable leader to replace ה' asked that משה when he dies. 'ה answered that יהושע would be the next leader, and he would lead בני ישראל into ארץ ישראל. 9. Which קרבנות are taught at the end of the פרשה? The תורה teaches us about: 1) the קרבן תמיד (daily offering), 2) the קרבן מוסף for שבת, 3) the קרבן מוסף for ראש חודש, 4) the קרבן מוסף for פסח, 5) the קרבן מוסף for שבועות, 6) the קרבן מוסף for אש השנהר , 7) the קרבן מוסף for יום כפור, 8) the קרבן מוסף for סוכות, and 9) the קרבן מוסף for שמיני עצרת. We read these sections on each יום טוב as the מפטיר.
