The late Rev. S. Hughes Garvin was pastor of St. Peter’s Episcopal

Church in Morristown, NJ. One parishioner was the daughter of the

famous American humorist Irvin S. Cobb. One year Rev. Garvin instruct-

ed his congregation that on Easter morning, the ushers would greet

them by name with the ancient Greek proclamation, “Christ is Risen!”

The parishioners were to reply, “The Lord is risen indeed!” Cobb’s

daughter was not there to hear Rev. Garvin’s instructions, but she did

appear at the Easter morning service.

“Good morning, Miss Cobb! Christ is risen!” exclaimed the usher at the

front door. Cobb looked a bit puzzled, but nodded and proceeded into

the church.

“Good morning, Miss Cobb! Christ is risen!” exclaimed the usher at the

head of the aisle. “Yes,” she replied, a bit cooly, “The gentleman at the

door told me…”
