NEWSLETTER 5 Kuressaare, Saaremaa (Estonia)

The fifth partner meeting was held from 4 to 6 June 2018 on Saaremaa.Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia, measuring. The main islandof Saaremaa, it is located in the Baltic Sea, south of Hiiumaa island and westof Muhu island, and belongs to the West Estonian Archipelago. The capital ofthe island is Kuressaare, which in January 2018 had 13,276 inhabitants. Thewhole island had a recorded population in January 2017 of 31,357.

Marine: Make use of the water SCC Center Kurresaare

SCC (Small Craft Competence Center) is a research and development unit ofthe Tallinn University of Technology. SCC’s main research area is sustainablemarine engineering with a focus on vessel hydrodynamics: hullresistance, seakeeping, loads and vessel manoeuvrability. The research of theSCC group focuses on the behavior of small crafts, ships and marine structuresin normal and extreme environments. The driving motivation is to enable better,

safer and more energy efficient future ship concepts that serve the societal andindustrial needs. For the project it is interesting to learn that SCC make use of the centuries-oldknowledge to make the best boats. Freelancers against vacancy NGO Kurresaare Edukontor

The NGO is a Coworking space for freelancers, teleworkers and smallbusinesses to share office space. Working side-by-side and interacting withpeople of different backgrounds generates synergy and surprising ideas. InKuressaare, a small group of coworking enthusiasts started to look for thesuitable rooms already in 2009. In Summer of 2016, NGO SaaremaaLoomemaja succesfully hosted a creative cottage in the centre of Kuressaare,and with the new energy from this experience, already two new places wereopened Spring 2017.

Creative House of Saaremaa in Kuressaare Market Hall offers workshops oflocal artists and craftsmen. To create a coworking office, they found suitablerooms at the central square of Kuressaare, on the second floor of the former

grocery store called “Edu” (“success” in Estonian). These rooms had beenempty and abandoned over a decade and were eagerly waiting for fresh colorand new ideas. Inspired by the history of the building, they named the newcoworking space EDUKONTOR and the official opening took place in May2017. NGO Kuressaare Edukontor was founded in November 2017.

A good example of how you can sometimes conquer vacancy on an island bychance. islands often have a high tourism content, by offering facilities to work,tourists stay longer on the island. Click here for more information...

Workshop: New Business Models

The workshop was hosted by Anu Vares, development advisor of SaaremaaMunicipality and was attended by about 20 local stakeholders. Deputy mayorKristinna Maripuu pointed out that despite we come from different islands theproblems, identities and creativity are similar. Simon Tijsma talked about Islands as an integral part of the innovationecosystem and the need for changes in thinking to embrace the shiftingeconomic paradigms. Economic crises will repeat every 30 or 40 years. It is notpossible to change the world in 1 or 2 years. Start with your dream: Where doyou want to be in 25-30 years from now? What do we need to get to this dream? The role of the government should bechanged drastically, so they will bring all stakeholders together on a dancefloor. Dr Idil Gaziulusoy of Aalto University in Finland, industrial design talked aboutBackcasting planning method and eco-acupuncture. Transition Is not aboutsustainably only. Transition is needed and is still going on. Boundary pushingfuture is necessary yet. Transition is a 3 way design challenge: creative,technical and political. Examples of new business models, ventures from macro to micro by professorHan Brezet. Pick your own definition of sustainable new business models thereare a lot to choose from. Work with the ingredients you have in your fridge instead of follow a difficult receipt with ingredients you don’t have.

RNA CONTRIBUTION TO NL5, OFFICIAL PROJECT SITE ANDSOCIAL MEDIA UPDATES

On Friday 19/04/2019, three related events of the project ISLANDS OFINNOVATION - the 5thsemester Regional Stakeholder’s Group meeting, asmall-scale workshop and a research presentation meeting took place at aUniversity Campus in Mytilini, kindly provided on behalf of the AegeanUniversity by Professor Mr. Zouros, member of the Regional Stakeholder’s

Group (RSG).

During the Regional Stakeholder’s Group meeting the members were informedabout the exchange of experience, management and publicity actions of theproject so far. Finally, the representatives of the Contracting Authority wereasked to designate the members of the North Aegean mission at the nextmeeting of the project, in Estonia.

At the following small-scale workshop attended by representatives of the NorthAegean Region, the Management Authority of the North Aegean, the businesscommunity (Chamber of Lesvos - Association of Tourist Agents), the AegeanUniversity, individuals and representatives of small and medium-sizedenterprises and postgraduate students, the results of the project so far and theirconnection with the Action Plan were presented and analyzed by the TechnicalConsultants of the project. The presentation was followed by dialogue betweenthe participants.

The participants expressed their opinions on the matter, supportingconsensually the development of the islands. It was mentioned that there aresome new enterprises in the region that are innovating in e-commerce actionsand that this sector needs special support, even if enterprises are still under theeconomic crisis regime.

The discussion was completed, followed by a detailed presentation of the goodpractices of the other partners of the project and a first estimate of the potentialportability in the Action Plan of North Aegean Region.

The meeting ended with the presentation of the results of the youth surveyregarding innovation and entrepreneurship.

BREZET & TIJSMA ON TOUR Professor Han Brezet and Simon Tijsma

During this period Brezet & Tijsma tried their best to spread the word. ProfessorHan Brezet and Simon Tijsma went to Helsinki (Finland) for a workshopEco acupuncture with Dr. Idil Gaziulusoy (industrial design). They talkedabout further project development and how you can use the TIPPINGAPPROACH in policy changes. As part of the action plan, there will be a lineabout follow-up projects. During this meeting the "muppets" picked up threeproject ideas that are now being discussed within the Province of Fryslân. Theyalso challenged the participants of the workshop to improve the TIPPINGWHEEL.
