Dear Parents, “Are you bad at math? And if so, why?” A lot of people say that they are bad at math and blame a lack of talent. This belief that we are born being good at certain things and bad at other things is called a fixed mindset. If you believe in this idea, then you see intelligence and ability as static. The opposite viewpoint, and one that researchers increasingly think is crucial to success, is the growth mindset. In 2007 Carol Dweck published her book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”, which introduced the concept of a growth mindset. What she found in her research was that changing the way students perceive their own abilities and potential could drastically alter their performance. Rather than praising students based on their talent or intelligence, she says, they should be praised on the process of learning, the effort they put in and the strategies they use, as well as their focus, perseverance, and improvement. Many teachers at Inman have discussed Growth Mindset with their students. Not surprisingly, children with a growth mindset are more likely to tackle a challenge or try something new. Dear Parents,

“Are you bad at math? Rather than praising students based on their talent or intelligence, she says, they should be praised on the process of learning, the effort they put in and the strategies

they use, as well as their focus, perseverance, and improvement.

Many teachers at Inman have discussed Growth Mindset with their students. Not surprisingly, children with a growth mindset are more likely to tackle a challenge or try something new.

Angel Project

Inman students are spreading some Christmas cheer this season by collecting

new toys for Burnaby children in need. This initiative supports the Christmas Bu-

reau’s Angel Project. Toys can be donated from Dec. 4-15. All toys collected will

go to Burnaby children from low income families.

If you would like to participate, please select a card from the Christmas tree in

the foyer and purchase a new gift, appropriate for the age and potential interest

of the child on your card. Return your unwrapped gift to the office by December

18. There are a limited number of cards available, so please come early.

The Inman student community would like to thank everyone in advance for help-

ing to make this season brighter for children in Burnaby.

“Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a

ripple with no logical end.” - Scott Adams

Closure of Schools for Extreme Weather Conditions

In the case of extreme weather conditions such as ice, wind and/or excessive snowfall,

the Superintendent of Schools has authority on behalf of the Board, to temporarily close

a school. As a general expectation, parents should assume that schools are open. If par-

ents believe the local conditions are unsafe, they should keep their child at home or ar-

range his/her early dismissal.

If schools are to be closed before morning classes begin, an announcement will be made

on local radio stations CKNW (980), CKWX (1130) and CBC (690) by 7:30 am if possible

or visit http://www.sd41.bc.ca

Coding in the classroom

Division 2 has been having fun learning code in the classroom using Spheros. After lots of time explor-

ing with robot and figuring out what it can do, they worked together to create mazes for their Spheros to

move through.

SFU—3D Printing

Division 2 had the opportunity to go up to SFU to attend a 3D Printing Workshop and a DNA

Analysis workshop provided by the Outreach Science Program. Hands on learning with Science

experts is a great way for them to learn.

Thank you to the Inman Community for supporting the Leader's in Training Food Drive. We collected 25 boxes of food for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

The Grade 6 and 7 students would like to thank

everyone who participated in the Cookie and Pie Fundraiser to help support them going to Camp Jubilee in June.

Boys Volleyball Team

For the past two months, ten of our grade 6 and 7 boys have

enthusiastically practiced their volleyball skills as participants of our

Inman Volleyball Team. The boys practiced twice a week and played

weekly games in our home gym and at other Burnaby schools. The

season finished this year on November 21, when the boys participated

in a large playday at Alpha Secondary.

Congratulations to all the boys for demonstrating fantastic sportsman-

ship and continuous skill

development throughout the season. A special thank you to the parents and staff who helped make

the away games possible by driving the team to the host schools. Also, thank you to members of the

girls volleyball team for refereeing and scorekeeping and Kaeden and Nitin for coming from Moscrop

to volunteer with coaching and refereeing home games.

UBC Girlsmarts

UBC Girlsmarts is a non-profit organization launched by the UBC Computer Science

department to help girls spark and sustain an interest in computer science. Our or-

ganization has been running workshops since 2004 and we often partner up with

various local tech companies (including Microsoft, Amazon, SAP, and many others)

to run many different workshops and activities for girls in grades 6 to 12.

This year, we will be offering two grade 6 workshops (in partnership with Microsoft)

and one grade 7 workshop (in partnership with SAP). Please note that our workshops

are for girls only. Our grade 6 workshops will teach girls about programming their

own game, cybersecurity, creating their own webpage, and hardware. The grade 7

workshops are run in partnership with SAP and will teach girls about design thinking,

programming, social gaming, and user

interface/user experience. If you are interested in learning more, our website is at

https://www.cs.ubc.ca/girlsmarts4tech/ or you can contact us at
