Dear Parents and Caregivers Thank you for your support over a very busy Term 2. We were very pleased with the large number of parents who came to Parent Teacher interviews recently. This will help you to assist our teachers to get the best from your son. All teachers have been asked to ensure they have placed a comment on every student’s academic performance on the Parent Portal so I would remind parents to look at this regularly.

We had a wonderful Foundation Dinner that celebrated cultural performance, showcased many of our talented students and raised $50,000 for our Foundation. our 1st X1 Football team are now finding the art of scoring goals. Our 2nd X1 Football team and our Under 55 B rugby team are both very proud to be unbeaten at this stage of the season. Many of our teams are playing well and we need to thank all those parents, Old Boys and supporters who help coach and manage our teams. We have been worried by a number of negative incidents involving our students and would remind all teams that boys need to show respect to referees, opposing players and supporters and always demonstrate fair play. Miss Penina Masoe is on an AFS Scholarship in Terms 3 and 4. Mr Fa’aaliga Leota will take her Samoan classes and Mr Luc Townsend will take her Social Studies classes and her Tutor class for the rest of the year. Mr Leigh Lidstone has won a Ministry of Education Sabbatical Leave Scholarship for Term 3. Mr Jordan Carey will be taking his classes. We also expect Father Pat Brophy SM, our College Priest back for Term 3 and he will be running a programme leading to baptism, confirmation and first Holy Communion for any students who have not made these sacraments of Initiation and are keen to do so. Our new Board of Trustees had their first meeting on 22nd June. They will be an excellent Board. Mr Paul Berry was elected as the new Chairperson. New lockers are being installed in Level One of Watters Block and in the PE Changing Rooms over the holidays thanks to a grant from our Parents’ Association. We congratulate Year 13 student Asalemo Vaoliko who has been shortlisted for a Robertson Scholarship to study law at either the University of California or at Harvard. He is being flown to Boston in the holidays for a series of interviews so we wish him well. As stated in last week’s email I am on leave for a few weeks. I am attending an International Conference for Catholic Principals in Melbourne and then travelling to the UK for my son Daniel’s wedding. I return to New Zealand on the 5th of August. The second roll-out of Sporting Blues for 2016 was announced at assembly last week. There were four recipients and they represented a cross section of sport. Waterpolo goalkeeper - Joshua de Reeper, Softballer - Andre Hart, Gymnast - Noah Tyner and Flag (Tag football) player - Dyrell Akavi were presented with a Blues Medal and Certificate by Rector, Neal Swindells. All four met the criteria of being named in a New Zealand team. Year 13 student Josh De Reeper has been selected in the New Zealand team for the World Youth championships in Montenegro in August-September. Year 12 student Andre Hart is playing for the New Zealand Under 17 Softball team at the Friendship Series in Sydney this week. Noah Tyner is also a Year 12 student and last year represented New Zealand at the Valerie Lukin gymnastics competition in Texas. Year 13 student Dyrell Akavi was a member of the New Zealand Under 18 Flag team that beat Australia 3-2 last year and is currently preparing for the Oceania Cup at the end of the year. Flag is a variation of touch football. Players have flags on their hips and the opposition have to rip them away to record a tackle. Sports Noticeboard Earlier this term a new Sports noticeboard was erected on the back wall of Todd Theatre. This noticeboard will officially be named the Jerry Collins Sports Noticeboard, after Jerry’s family gave the College their blessing for his name to be used. Jerry played for the St Patrick’s College 1st XV in 1996, 1997 and 1998 before going on to represent the All Blacks in 48 tests. He died tragically in a car accident in southern France on 5th June 2015. Entertainment included MC and Deputy Head boy Nathan Lopa using charm and humour throughout the night and received a standing ovation at the end of the evening. Old Boy, Tim Gordon had a Q&A with panellists Mike Woodbury, Mark Wright, and Matt Stone around “Why should we support the Performing Arts?” followed by a hilarious impromptu sketch. Firm favourites Con Anima choir, performed after the Jazz Band with new additions the Poly Club, Griffin Lilley, Jacob Farr, Ben McLean and Hannah from Grease followed by our auctioneer Old Boy Mick Robbers all performed to such a high standard ensuring the evening’s success.

Ten of our Year 11 students have been busily preparing for the upcoming Fouviere Event, which will take place in the second week of the upcoming holidays. The Fouviere Event is a gathering of young people from the nine schools of the Marist Network to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Pledge of Fouviere, the founding moment of the Society of Mary. The event is being held in Northland and is based at Motuti Marae in North Hokianga. Our students are deeply grateful to the Marist Education Trust who have generously sponsored the entire event. The trip would also not be possible without the generous support of our staff, Lucy Macleod and Fr Matt Crawford who have kindly agreed to accompany our boys. The Ministry team are saddened to say farewell to Fr Pat Breeze. Fr Pat joined our team at the start of the year and has done an amazing job of juggling his responsibilities as the college priest of both St Pat’s Town and Silverstream. We are grateful for the dedication he has shown to developing the Special character of the College and know that our students have appreciated his open and friendly manner. It is often said though that no door closes without another one opening, and so we also look forward to the return of Fr Pat Brophy. Fr Pat Brophy has been away on his sabbatical and will return to his position as college priest at the start of next term. Mr Maurice Atkinson Ministry Team Leader

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Year 11 Study Skills On Tuesday, 26th July, in the first week of next term, all Year 11 students will have a 90 minute Study Skills programme. This will be run by an outside speaker and is timed to help Year 11 students to better prepare for their upcoming College examinations. College Examinations and Study Leave The College examinations for Years 11 to 13 will commence on Wednesday, 17th August and run through until Thursday, 25th August. Senior students are not required to be at school on the Wednesday or Thursday (17th – 18th August) unless they have exams. The exams on these two days will be held in the Hall and will cover the subjects with larger numbers. From Friday, 19th August classes will run as normal and students will undertake exams during their normal class times, especially during the double periods they have each day. An examination timetable will be available to students early in Term 3. Students will be at school as normal during this time. NSN Cards from NZQA In the last week of Term 2 Tutor Teachers gave out to all students doing NCEA a Registration card from NZQA. This has on it the students NSN (National Student Number) which they need for sitting examinations and to track their results. It also has instructions for getting their learner login for the NZQA website. If your son has not set up this access he should do so immediately as it provides a wealth of useful material around his academic progress and becomes increasingly useful as he moves up through the school. Also please check that the details on the card are correct. Scholarship By the early part of Term 3 students will need to have made a final decision around which, if any Scholarship subjects they are going to enter. Students doing Scholarship pay an extra $30 per Scholarship subject. This is in addition to the $76.70 which is the standard NCEA fee for all students entered for NCEA. Scholarships are awarded to the top 3% of students doing that subject at Level 3. As such it is the most prestigious and challenging academic award a student can gain while at secondary school. It requires a high level of ability, motivation and commitment. Students should only commit to Scholarship if they have been recommended by a staff member and they are committed to doing the tutorials and Scholarship work provided. Note that after the end of August, students cannot be withdrawn from their Scholarship entries. In the last week of Term 2 Year 13 students would have received an email inviting those who are committed to Scholarship to register for NetNZ. This is an online tutorial programme which enables students to receive additional instruction online. The fee of $200 is subsidised by the College Foundation so that students only have to pay $50. Registrations need to be in place by the first week of Term 3. Courses are available in most, but not all Scholarship subjects. Parents wanting to learn more about NetNZ should contact Mr Doug Walker. Scholarship meeting for Parents A Scholarship meeting where parents and students can meet with teachers and learn more about the Scholarship programme will be held on Tuesday, 9 August from 5.30 - 6.30 pm in the staffroom. Mr David Martin Assistant Rector (Curriculum)

CAREERS CORNER

Personal organisation and time management – we all lack these qualities at times; however our students need to be aware that deadlines are just that and that playing on the good will of staff, employers and parents only goes so far. The train, plane and the tertiary academic office close when the deadline is stated. Students who leave work completion to the last minute are dicing with failure. So make the time and set personal expectations and get this work, permission slips, and documentation in on time. These little qualities say a lot about an individual’s character and these considerations reduce the workload for others.

Career Advice for all students 1. Make personal plans. You do not need to know what you want to be, just be able to

move in a general direction e.g. your skills or passion. 2. Research qualifications and career pathways or try on the job training supported by

your school work. 3. Make the most of your time at St Pat’s by fully participating or start your own club

college library computers. Year 10 students will be taken to Whitireia for the morning on 2 August. Last year the Liaison team went through what tertiary study was all about, entry levels and requirements before food and a tour. The feedback was really positive and the opportunity to see first-hand what is available is an eye opener to many. Many thanks to Whitireia in advance. Course Levels Level 1 - 102, 101, 100. Level 2 - 203, 202, 200. Level 3 - 304, 303. The courses your son is currently working at combined with his effort and understanding will determine what level of course he will enter next year. The first number is for the year level and the last number indicates academic ability levels. Year 11 - 102 level courses are the mainstream academic courses. 101 level courses are catch up courses. 100 level courses are for students who lack proficiency in that subject. English and Mathematic Departments operate at Year 11 - 102, 101 and 100 level courses. Students are moved into courses based on their understanding and proficiency in that subject. Year 13 Career Interviews – we have nearly completed the Year 13 interviews. Key indicators are: the general lack of revision and study; the need for time management skills and the ability to research what is Merit from Excellence. This last point can be quite upsetting when students fall just short of the 50 credits needed for an endorsement. Scholarships – a huge number exist, but so few of our students do the research and actually follow through with applications. Make the time over the holidays to make this happen. Many scholarships are never applied for so go to www. http://generosity.org.nz/giv-me This is a free scholarship database on our school library computers and also at your local library.

Careers Expo – June 17 - all Year 12 students attended this afternoon session which was an opportunity to meet providers of tertiary courses ranging from PTEs to universities, Employers, Defence and Trade organisations. At the expo one of the presenters, Whitireia Polytechnic had a Paramedic simulation competition which was won in record time by Joshua Cox who only that week had completed his Comprehensive First Aid Certificate at school.

Year 12 students attend Victoria Open Day – June 30 Forty-Four Year 12 students attended the Victoria Open Day and were able to hear about entry requirements and a range of lectures from domestic violence to cancer research. This day provides for many students the impetus to push on with their studies and plan for future careers and seek out degree courses.

Guide to study Options from Victoria University - http://www.victoria.ac.nz/study/course-career/school-subjects/planning-ahead.pdf Volunteering – this is a much overlooked aspect on a CV, yet it is one of the biggest messages an employer can pick up on - that this young person goes the extra mile and cares about others. This could be tutoring, coaching, giving of your time, Vinnies, Church related… Half year courses – Yoobee, Weltec and Whitireia are enrolling for their July courses especially Trades and Information Technology. Capital Training and G&H Training can take students at any time of the year. These courses provide pathways to qualifications in training students who can study what they are really interested in to gain their NCEA Level 2 or 3 qualifications and some of these courses are covered by Youth Guarantee and are free. RealME and Studylink – students who will be accessing student loans and allowances will need to create a Real Me account as well as apply online to Studylink. This is a new process and even though we have requested support from these government departments to assist our students none has been forthcoming. Go to www.studylink.govt.nz Career Tools - if your son is unsure about his future get him to try the “Careerquest” quiz and depending on his thinking at the time this may provide some insights to future career pathways. This can be accessed at www.careers.govt.nz – a fabulous, informative website for young and old. Another great website I use a lot is: www.futureintech.org.nz for students in engineering or trades. Last month's Home-School Partnership for our Polynesian community focused on informing families about Course Selection for 2017. It was wonderful to see so many families supporting this initiative for the benefit of our Polynesian students and their academic success. YEAR 11 VISIT TO VICTORIA UNIVERSITY

Today, I had the pleasure of taking 20 Year 11 students to Victoria University in the hope that they would aspire to wanting to further their education at tertiary level. Today was a great starting ground for Year 11 Pasifika students who are starting the planning of their careers post-secondary school. Students were inspired and motivated after listening to Pasifika graduates and having the opportunity to attend lectures and a tour of the campus. Students were able to network, ask questions, observe, learn and be allowed to aspire. My goal is to ensure that today's visit inspired students to gain Merit or Excellence endorsements at Levels 1-3 including University Entrance which will enable them to gain funding for their studies through scholarships and gain University degrees and hopefully go on to study Post-graduate work. The boys represented the college in an exemplary manner and appear more certain of possible career pathways. Ms Ainslie Sauvao Polynesian Students' Co-ordinator

ST PATRICKS COLLEGE and MARIST ST PATS RFC – Team Mates!

Six in Wellington Under 19 squad

Six Marist St Pats players have been named in the Wellington Under 19 wider training squad announced recently. In keeping with the Club’s Marist traditions it is notable that all six players come from Colleges that embrace the Marist tradition:

• Foliga Vaalepu-Austin (Bishop Viard College) • Kerrod Foaese (St Patrick’s College, Wellington) • Regan Sword (Hato Paora College) • Willie Schutz (St Patrick’s College, Wellington) • Ivan Fepuleai (St Patrick’s College, Silverstream) • Nese Solia (St Patrick’s College, Silverstream)

Both St Patrick’s College and Marist St Pats wish all six players the best for the upcoming months as they look to solidify spots in the Under 1 9 team. ANNUAL CLUB MASS – Sunday 24 July 2016

The Marist St Pats family of senior and junior players, coaches, managers and supporters extends a warm invitation to the staff and students of St Patrick’s College to join with them at MSP’s annual Club Mass! MSP's chaplain Fr Barry Scannell SM (Parish Priest of St Mary of the Angels) will celebrate the annual Club Mass on Sunday 24 July at the St Pat's College Chapel at 10.30am followed by a shared morning tea. Students, families and staff of St Patrick’s College have contributed towards the successful rugby traditions that Marist St Pats has established in Wellington Club Rugby. This is another opportunity for players, who wish to continue the Patrician tradition and experience the same camaraderie enjoyed whilst at St Patrick’s College, to join with the Marist St Pats family. This 2016 season has continued the spirit, friendships and traditions of the College and this kindred sports Club. For more information on playing rugby with kindred club Marist St Pats please contact the Club’s Coaching Co-coordinator, St Patrick’s College Old Boy, Kas on 021 1203958 or check out the Club’s web-site www.msprugby.co.nz or Facebook www.facebook.com/msprugby for regular MSP news updates. GREASE

“Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion, Grease is the way we are feeling ….” The St Patrick’s College production for 2016 is that iconic picture of the 1950’s – Grease. The rebellious youth of American college life come alive with Danny Zuko, trying to be the leader of the T- Birds whilst falling for the pure very un-Pink Lady-like Sandy. Tough guy or romantic hero? Then there is Kenickie with his beloved ‘Greased Lightning’, the uber- cool Rizzo, the endless optimist Frenchie and her pink hair, the hero-worshipping Doody and the duo of Roger and Sonny, alongside the flirty Marty and the goofball Jan. Rydell High is waiting …. Grease: 1 August – 4 August, St Patrick’s College Hall. Tickets: $25 for adults, $20 for students/children. Tickets can be purchased through the College Cashier office (cash/EFTPOS only) or online through Eventfinda (please note that online bookings will incur a credit card fee).
