Newsletter 33-2012 Friday 26 th October Well the icy poles have certainly been popular this week with the Grade 6 students making plenty of sales to help their fundraising effort. The sunshine certainly helped to boost sales! Remember all profits go to the Grade 6 Graduation Dinner and also helps provide decorations to make the evening special. Sales will continue over the coming weeks regularly on Fridays and on any forecasted day over 25 degrees. The students have been great remembering to put the papers and sticks in the bin and keep our playground tidy. As part of our planning for 2013, forms were distributed to all families about who is returning to Glenroy Central next year. If you have still not returned your form please make sure that you do so as soon as possible so that we can make sure your children are included on our lists. If you have a prep student for next year or you know someone who does and have still not completed enrolment forms, it is important that you do this now we have already had our Prep Information Evening and transition sessions begin next week. These sessions are really important and will give you and your child the opportunity to meet their teacher and to find out some things about our programs. Coming up on November 11 th is Remembrance Day - the day many countries around the world remember those who have sacrificed their lives for their country in war. The poppy flower is the symbol of Remembrance Day and to support the RSL we are selling poppies, pins and wrist bands at the office. See below for prices. Congratulations to those students who won prizes in our Nude Food Day Lehana Grant, Omar Nachar, Maryclaire Giuliano, Aisha Khoder, Rheanne Zayat and Minaal Shahid. Thank you to everyone for supporting this Juniour School Council activity by making an effort to cut down on packaged and processed food in lunches. This important initiative highlights the need to provide our children with healthy food that is good for growing bodies and brains as well as help to protect our environment from an overload of litter. The back gate to the school is beginning to be used by some families which is great. The proper gate and fence will be put up during Cup Week. As we are still trying to get into a routine of locking and opening this gate at set times, if you get to the gate at the end of the day and it has not been unlocked feel free to give the office a ring and we will come and open it! Friday 26th

October

Well the icy poles have certainly been popular this week with the Grade 6 students making

plenty of sales to help their fundraising effort. The sunshine certainly helped to boost sales!

Remember all profits go to the Grade 6 Graduation Dinner and also helps provide decorations

to make the evening special. Sales will continue over the coming weeks – regularly on

Fridays and on any forecasted day over 25 degrees. The students have been great

remembering to put the papers and sticks in the bin and keep our playground tidy.

As part of our planning for 2013, forms were distributed to all families about who is returning

to Glenroy Central next year. If you have still not returned your form please make sure that

you do so as soon as possible so that we can make sure your children are included on our lists.

If you have a prep student for next year or you know someone who does and have still not completed enrolment

forms, it is important that you do this now – we have already had our Prep Information Evening and transition

sessions begin next week. These sessions are really important and will give you and your child the opportunity

to meet their teacher and to find out some things about our programs.

Coming up on November 11th

is Remembrance Day - the day many countries

around the world remember those who have sacrificed their lives for their country

in war. The poppy flower is the symbol of Remembrance Day and to support the

RSL we are selling poppies, pins and wrist bands at the office. See below for prices.

Congratulations to those students who won prizes in our Nude Food Day – Lehana Grant, Omar Nachar,

Maryclaire Giuliano, Aisha Khoder, Rheanne Zayat and Minaal Shahid. Thank you to everyone for supporting

this Juniour School Council activity by making an effort to cut down on packaged and processed food in

lunches. This important initiative highlights the need to provide our children with healthy food that is good for

growing bodies and brains as well as help to protect our environment from an overload of litter.

The back gate to the school is beginning to be used by some families which is great. The proper gate and fence

will be put up during Cup Week. As we are still trying to get into a routine of locking and opening this gate at

set times, if you get to the gate at the end of the day and it has not been unlocked feel free to give the office a

ring and we will come and open it!

Have a good weekend.

RETURN TO SCHOOL ADVICE: Thank you to all the families who have

returned these forms. If you have not returned your form yet please do so ASAP as it is vital we receive

this information.

HELPING YOUR CHILD TO READ AND WRITE Questions play an important part of establishing how

much your child understands from what they have read.

There are different types of questions which show various

levels of understanding.

These types of questions require your child to refer back to the text

that they have been reading;

What are the character’s names?

What was the setting?

What did each character do?

What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the text?

MATHS TIPS FOR PARENTS: There are lots of activities you can do at home, using everyday items, to help explore maths

with your child. Below are a few ideas:

Play family games like chess or checkers to add excitement

to maths activities. Play games in the car such as maths

bingo or adding licence plate numbers. Lots of board games

need maths such as ‘Junior Monopoly’ or card games such

as ‘Uno’.

This week’s puzzle: 8 monkeys take 8 minutes to eat 8 bananas. How many minutes would it take 4 monkeys to eat 4 bananas?

Maths joke of the week: Why did the maths book look so sad? Because it had so many problems.

Answer to last puzzle: 987654
