KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together”
NEWSLETTER 30 - 2017
Thursday 21st September, 2017
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Foundation Breakfast
Last Friday saw many Foundation students and staff wearing pyjamas and dressing gowns to school, not because they were late, but because our Foundation students were having breakfast at school as part of our camping program. Foundation students enjoyed cereal, toast with vegemite or jam and cheese toasties. They waited patiently in a line, remembered their manners and ate their breakfast nicely, sitting at the tables or on the floor. A big thankyou to our student leaders who helped to cook, serve and clean up after the event. Thank you also to the many staff who assisted our Foundation teachers during the breakfast and to our Foundation teachers for all the organisation and hard work in making this event a reality.
Year 1/2 Big Night In
Friday continued being a busy day with our Year 1/2 students returning in the evening for games and dinner and, for the Year 2 students, a sleepover, which included breakfast on Saturday morning. The students were very excited when they returned to school and enjoyed the games immensely. Pizza and ice-cream in a cone went down well for dinner, followed by a movie and popcorn for our Year 2 students, before settling down to sleep. Although there were a few tears, most students settled well. Thank you also to the Year 1/2 staff for their hard work and organisation and for the many other staff who assisted to make this a truly memorable event for our Year 1/2 students.
Student Absences / Lateness
On Monday, Wendy, Tom and Kathleen met with Benjamin Elisha, the Regional Attendance Officer, to discuss strategies to improve our current absence and lateness data. A slight improvement was seen in our lateness data last week. Thank you to those parents and students that have made a concerted effort to arrive at school on time, ready to learn. Remember every minute counts.
Parent Requests
A reminder that if you have a parent request regarding your child/ren’s placement which you feel will support their learning and you would like considered for 2018, please outline in writing and hand into the school office no later than Wednesday 25th October. Requests will be considered confidentially and
accommodated as far as is possible.
Staffing
Jenny Robinson returns from Long Service Leave at the beginning of Term 4. I spoke to her last Friday and she is having a wonderful break. I am sure she will tell us of her many memorable moments on her return. Wendy McCall will be taking Long Service Leave for the first two weeks of Term 4. Both Tom and I will be covering her role during her absence
Friday
Tomorrow is the last day of Term 3 and the students will be dismissed from school at 2:10pm instead of 3:10pm. We will be having a whole school assembly in the Gym at 1:30pm. All parents / carers are welcome to attend. Students from each year level will give a brief recount of the highlights of this term. I wish everyone an enjoyable and relaxing term break. WE ARE STILL COLLECTING ITEMS UNTIL FRIDAY IF YOU FORGOT TO BRING AN ITEM OR YOU WISH TO DONATE ADDITIONAL ITEMS.
FOUNDATION BREAKFAST
Last Friday, 85 Foundation children had fun making their breakfast as part of the Kurunjang Primary School Camping Program. They ate cereal, toasted cheese sandwiches, fruit, toast and drank juice before washing and drying their dishes. A huge thank you to the 9 student leaders from years 3 to 6 and staff that helped make this a very successful morning.
OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS
We currently have a large number of overdue library books. As the holidays are now upon us could I asked all Parents and Carers to help their children look for books that belong to our school and return them to the library early next term.
Thankyou Lynne Notman ~ Library Technician
NAPLAN ONLINE TRIAL
From next year students will complete NAPLAN online, our school is a pilot school for trialing NAPLAN Online. Over the last two weeks, 30 year 2 and year 4 students have participated in trial tests in writing and a combination of numeracy, reading, grammar
and punctuation. The tests are interactive and ‘fun’, according to our year 2 students. Well done to you all for displaying the school values of excellence and resilience when completing the tests.

MELBOURNE WRITER’S FESTIVAL
On the 29 of August four students by the names of Crystal, Tori, Jessica and Jordyn went on an inspiring journey through the writer’s festival and some totally awesome stops on the way. After much anticipation we finally got to see the famous Graeme base where he told us about what he did to become an author and illustrator and gave us some tips on how to get ideas for our writing, we also got to see his new book that’s coming out SOOOOOONNNNN and we also got him to sign our books.
After we had a walk around the city we had a vote, we could either go to the Melbourne Art Museum or the Melbourne City Library. The Melbourne Art Museum won but before we went there we had a little walk and look around the graffiti. There were pieces from a tiger to a penguin and finally to a heart in a tree with knives going through either way.
We had a chat with Alison Lester and she showed us how she did her pictures in her book and how she made them just right and we also got her to sign our books.
We then had to go back to school but that’s not all look down below for more
Fun facts –
Graeme Base’s favourite animal is an elephant. Alison Lester pictures aren’t perfect on the first try. Both authors are bringing out new books. Graeme Base gets his ideas from every day things. Graeme Base lives in Melbourne with his wife and three kids. Both authors didn’t intend to become an author it was by accident.
I hope you had fun reading have a nice weekend.
