P&C Support At the P&C general meeting last week the P&C provided $19865 funding for the school to purchase 32 key boards, 40 IPads, 4 charging stations and licences for our device management and bulk purchasing and deployment of apps to the school owned devices. This combined with the IPads the school has just purchased, will be deployed to Year 5 classes for teachers to use with their students in action research and also during class support sessions from Winthrop Australia. The focus for teachers clearly remains on “teaching and Learning” and for our Year 5 students build practice and familiarity ahead of the NAPLAN Online in May.

Other devices will be deployed in Year 2 classes for staff to use in their action research and in class support sessions from Winthrop Australia

Camp Out – this weekend

The dads’ group will be holding their annual camp out on the school oval on Saturday evening 9 March 2019. Dads and their children can start arriving from 3;00pm to set up camp on the oval ready for a night under the stars. There are events, BBQ’s and games planned to build the community spirit the dads’ group is all about. If you would like more information or register your attendance, please email; [email protected]

This year there is also a gold coin donation with funds going to the “fathering project”, that state body that supports dads’ groups across the state. The camp out concludes at 11:00am on Sunday morning.

Please note the following from our Dad’s Group Organisers

- only current Rostrata PS kids are allowed to camp

- use the kiss-and-go in the laneway next to the oval to drop off gear before parking

- A trolley available for use to move gear to the camp site from cars

- BBQ’s will be available to cook up dinner and / or breakfast so don’t forget to pack food. The shops at Rostrata will also be available if you prefer.

- There will be a coffee van on site at 7am Sunday morning

- Don’t forget your tent and camping gear and any games / activities to play with the kids

I am looking forward to seeing the school community coming together on the oval on Saturday evening and look forward to catching up with our “dads”.

BYOD Parent Information Meeting - 3 April 9.00am All parents are invited to attend this workshop to;

• Learn about your child’s device • How to manage the apps at home and • See how the students are using these at school to enhance their learning

Later in the year we will also run information sessions specifically for parents of students in Year 2 to explain the BYO IPad program as we did for parents in 2018.

We look forward to sharing just how students and staff are using the devices to support the teaching and learning programs being run across the school.

School Board Meeting The first meeting of the year for the School Board will be on Monday 18 March and ahead of this meeting the four subcommittees are meeting to discuss and support areas that include; the 2019 – 2021 Business Plan development, Governance and Risk, Policies and Community Engagement.

New School Logo – the background story on the school website Last year our senior students created a short video clip shown at the launch in November which depicted the transition from the old school logo to the current logo. After seeing how the new logo “morphed” out of the old logo, the feedback from parents and students was so positive that we have uploaded it to the school website and attached the explanation of how the new logo speaks to our values and beliefs around CARE.

It was also shown at the new parent welcome morning tea last week and again, it resonated strongly with parents who attended.

You can find this on the under “News and Events”, click on the logo and then click “here” to play the video. Please have a look – it takes less than two minutes.

Parents Using the Staff Carparks I remind all parents that staff carparks are not for parents to use for picking up or setting down their children. Reversing cars into areas where small children are traversing is a dangerous situation and we request your assistance by observing this request.

Parents who have an ACROD pass, are of course able to use the car bays reserved for their ease of access to our school.

School Parking – Message from the City of Canning In an effort to provide a safer environment for everyone, officers from the City of Canning patrol school parking in the mornings and the afternoons throughout the school term.

It is imperative that drivers are aware of the road rules and understand signage around schools to ensure the safety of children, road users and pedestrians in general. Unlawful parking in school areas is a major safety hazard and parking infringement notices may be issued for incorrect, unlawful or dangerous parking. At the beginning of each school year, City Officers conduct educational patrols in school areas. During this period Officers remind drivers of the need to park legally and safely and ensure compliance with the City’s Parking Local Law 2010. As part of this initiative, City Officers work closely with the school community to promote safety around schools. Information leaflets are also distributed to schools for inclusion in school newsletters to advise parents of the parking requirements under the Local Law.

Common Parking Problems

• Stopping/Parking in a No Stopping area • Parking in a No Parking area • Stopping/parking on a footpath • Double parking • Stopping/Parking on a verge without the adjoining occupiers consent • Parking so that the vehicle causes an obstruction • Parking against the flow of traffic • Stopping/parking in a bus stop

Pick Up and Set Down Areas

Pick Up and Set Down Areas are designed to allow large numbers of vehicles/parents to pick up or set down their children in a short length of time. Typically, they are located adjacent to the main school entrance. When using these areas, kiss your child, say goodbye, allow them out and drive away as soon as possible. When using the designated Pick Up and Set Down Areas around schools never leave your car unattended.

Business Plan The 2019 – 2021 School Business Plan is currently being developed and will reflect the six categories within the new school review framework. Staff have been meeting to review and reflect on data sources that included: parent, staff and student surveys, NAPLAN, ACER assessments, system directions, PBS data and Instructional technology recommendations. From this we were able to identify key areas of focus for the next three years and work will continue on planning to address these in conjunction with Business Plan subcommittee of the School Board.

Coder dojo This has been in recess this term and we are looking to relaunch this in the coming weeks with some modifications. However, in the meantime this before school program is not operating.

Mindset

In a recent Parenting Ideas article (https://www.parentingideas.com.au/blog/benefit-mindset-beyond-a-growth-mindset/) Michael Grose described some simple ways in which parents could help their children develop a BENEFIT MINDSET. Many of us are aware of the work of Carol Dweck (Mindset, 2006), and understand the importance of having a growth mindset, rather than a fixed mindset. An Australian researcher, Ash Buchanan (Thrive Research Hub, University of Melbourne, http://www.benefitmindset.com), recently proposed that ‘in a Benefit Mindset we not only seek to fulfil our potential, but choose to do it in a way that contributes to the wellbeing of others and society as a whole.’

The differences between these three mindsets are summarised in the table below.

With a benefit mindset, the focus goes beyond ‘ME’ and moves towards ‘WE’. Learning new things is not only for oneself, but also for the benefit of others.

So, since humans tend to think first about themselves, how can we help our children develop this mindset? We can do this by encouraging them to act kindly, serve others (family, friends, neighbours, school community), consider other’s feelings, and to express their own feelings of gratitude. In this way they will become ‘everyday leaders’ in their relationships with others.

Italian News

Salve!

This week some classes have been creating "Uber Eats" style ads using their Italian vocab and grammar knowledge and ipads. We will share some in the next newsletter.

For those of you wanting to talk food around the breakfast or dinner table here are a few useful phrases.

Mi passi il latte per favore (pass me the milk please).

Che cosa vuoi mangiare? (what do you want/wish to eat?)

Mangio (I eat) i cereali e la frutta per colazione (breakfast).

Preferisci la frutta e vedura? (Do you prefer fruit or vegetables?)

Buon apettito tutti!

A presto, Signora Rechichi.

Garden News

All the Year 4 classes have had their first classes in the garden, many of them coming down to the garden for the first time. Their enthusiasm is energising and it is wonderful to see them walking around pointing at the fruit and vegetables with excitement and wonder. They have all completed their orientation of the garden ( I am always impressed at how many can point North without even thinking too much about it) and have moved on to their wheelbarrow and tool carrying licenses- very important before they start work in the garden.

We have been harvesting lots of figs which have been netted to protect them from the birds, it’s amazing how abundant our fig tree is. Also tomatoes and spring onions for the kitchen.

Thank you to the De Bari family who stepped up at short notice to feed the chickens over the weekend and all those people who have put their hand up to feed the chickens this term.

Happy gardening !

Rostrata Dads Dads and Kids Camp Out - School Oval

After having such a great time last year, we are holding our second Rostrata dads and kids camp out on the school oval. If you'd like to come, please email [email protected] and let us know how many of you are coming.

The details:

The camp out is overnight this Saturday 9 March 2019 to Sunday 10 March, starting at 3pm on the Saturday and finishing at 11am on the Sunday. We request a gold coin donation per tent: the money raised we will put towards our annual contribution to the Fathering Project, who helped us start our Dads group and provide much ongoing support.

Bring children (Rostrata students!), a tent (sorry - no caravans), some food and drink (but no alcohol) for dinner and breakfast, and your favourite campsite games. We'll have the school BBQs available for use and hopefully a coffee van to come by in the morning.

Second-Hand Uniforms The Second-Hand Uniform Stall for Term 1 will be set up outside the undercover area on Thursday, 14th March 2019. It begins at 8.15am and runs until the commencement of the Junior School assembly at 8.45am.

All items are $5.00 (cash only) with all proceeds going to the P&C funded projects. There is a good collection of uniforms available for all age groups, so please come along and make use of these bargains.

A reminder to please check and collect any lost property on or before Friday, 8th March 2019. Any lost property (not labelled) that has not been collected by this date will be sorted and added to the second-hand uniform stall.

Kind regards,

Second-Hand Uniform Committee

School Banking School banking runs every Wednesday at 8.15-8.45am in the undercover area. All students are welcome to make a deposit with no minimum. For every deposit made, the student will receive a token that then, they will be able to exchange with a reward, once they collected 10 tokens. Please note that tokens are not allowed to be combined with friends and/or siblings.

School banking Information Day will be held on the 13th of March 2019. The representative from Commonwealth Bank will be there and they’ll be able to open new accounts. This is a good opportunity for those who have not yet participated in our school banking program. Hope to see you there.
