This is a chance for parents to meet our staff and welcome new families. This year the BBQ will be held at Boolarra Primary School. The school will supply sausages and cordial. Students will have the opportunity to take parents into grades and show them their new classroom, as well as share some of their learning. Please fill in the attached slip, as this will assist in catering. BUSHFIRE GRANTS Last year Karen Twomey and I applied for two grants through the Department of Education Bush Fire Fund. We were very fortunate to be successful in both of our submissions. The first is for training for a new program to support the teaching and learning of numeracy. Four staff members will be attending a course at Monash University to assist students, Getting Ready in Numeracy (GRIN). The cost of the course is approximately $3,500 and is fully subsidised. The school covers the cost of relief teachers. We were also successful in our application to cover the cost of Steve Schulz for our drumming performance at the Boolarra Folk Festival. This was through Community Grants, Department of Education. Values Last year the students and staff spent time reviewing and understanding our school values. This year we have developed a document that outlines the expectations and our responsibilities based on these values. Through exploring and the explicit teaching of our values, we aim to develop a common understanding. Please take some time this week to discuss these with your child/children. Previewing Learning Grade F/1W – The Foundation and One students this week are continuing to focus on establishing good routines at school. The students are continuing to learn and consolidate classroom routines such as storing books in locker tubs, sharing and listening to others and keeping their bag and belongings tidy. The Grade One students have their take home books this week and will be getting back into the routine of reading each night at home. Remember to record this in the take home diary and return books to school each day. Grade 2/3/4H – In 2/3/4 we will be looking further into place value with our primary focus on partitioning and expanding numbers. Students are encouraged to explore Mathletics to further their understanding of place value. In terms of reading, all students are encouraged to read every night when possible. Grade 4/5/6TS – Next week in reading the 4/5/6 class will be looking at predicting what might come next in a story based on information they already have. If they are reading to you or even watching a television program, it would be helpful if you could ask them to predict what may come next and explain why they think this.

KURNAI NEWS Hello everyone, it is great to be able to introduce myself as the Campus Principal at Kurnai College, Churchill Campus. After serving my apprenticeship in 2018, I have now taken on the substantive position. I look forward to working with Sue to improve and make transition successful for students from Primary to Secondary school. Last year at Kurnai, we made a commitment to providing resources to improve students’ Literacy and Numeracy. To this end, every English and Maths class had two teachers! I am pleased to announce that we will continue with this model for 2019. In addition to this, our Targeted reading at Kurnai (TR@K) program has been rolled out to include both Year 7 and students. In the short time that we had TR@K we saw improvement in almost all students reading levels. Under the guidance of our Literacy Specialist, Erin Gruis we know that students’ achievement will continue to improve. If you would like to discuss this or any other program at Kurnai please come along to a Cuppa and Chat with Cleo on Tuesday, Feb 12 at 11.00 am NETBALL Boolarra Football Netball Club are looking for junior girls and boys that would like to play netball in our 9&Under, 11&Under and 13&Under teams.
