IN THIS ISSUE:
“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
(Albert Camus)
The second term is well underway. This term leads us to the mid-year
examinations which will start in late May/ early June. We remind all students and
parents that punctual attendance and timely submission of work are fundamental to
sustained academic success. Teachers are available to offer additional academic
support where required- some support classes are timetabled, others by
appointment. We urge students to use the upcoming public holidays to consolidate
course work/ assessment tasks so as to ‘free up’ time later in the term to focus on
exam preparation. A major focus of the College this term will be the production of
the musical ‘Hairspray’...... please diarise Wed 23 and Thur 24 May! This term, all
students are required to select one winter sport- please contact Mr Musamba (SP) or
Ms Robertson (College) if you require any assistance regarding the winter sports
programme. We wish everyone a successful, happy and enjoyable term ahead.
A summary of the term’s news to date follows:
A warm ‘Welcome’ to the new families that joined ASB this term.
A warm ‘Welcome’ to Senior Preparatory teacher Mrs Jacqueline-Ann
Pienaar.
Meaningful and useful dialogue took place at the recent Teacher-Parent
Liaison meetings. We appreciate the parents (and some students) who met
with teachers. Parents are welcome to email teachers about any matter if they
were not able to attend these meetings.
A group of College students wrote the UCT Maths Olympiad exam. The
bus strike/ protest action affected the original plans, but all worked out in the
end. Thank you to Ms Jakins, UCT Maths Dept and the ASB Maths Dept for
facilitating the arrangements.
Our SP Summer Sports Awards commended the summer sporting
achievements of our young sports women and men. The assembly enjoyed
listening to our special guest speaker Sean Holmes. Thank you to Mr
Musamba, staff, coaches and parents for all your positive support and
enthusiasm. We wish everyone well for the current winter season.
The Gr 10s held their annual Gr 10 Soccer Day. Teams ranged from Gr 7s to
‘Old Boys’ and The Dads. Traditionally this event raises money for the Gr 10
Dance and for a charity of the students’ choice. Well done to the Gr 10
organisers and thank you to all for the enthusiastic support.
College students attended the UCT Open Day.
RH Atlantic Seaboard received a certificate of Accreditation from UMALUSI
at a special presentation on Tuesday, 24th April.

“You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we
call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.”
(Mary Pickford)
Dear Mums, Dads and Guardians
Welcome back! You may recall that
last time I wrote about the im-
portance of our children develop-
ing skills? Well, I recently read an
article penned by Barbara Oakley
(Plse email me for the link) entitled,
“Could Singapore hold the se-
cret to preparing workers for an
uncertain future?’”
Essentially, Oakley argues that our
children will need to “second skill”
one day. This means developing
your skills for a new job while you
are still working. Singapore is in-
vesting in its citizens so that they
can stay flexible AND employed.
This reminded me of when I was
studying to be a teacher at UCT,
while serving burgers at the Spur
and working as an apprentice in an
independent VW workshop. My
mechanical knowledge has earned
me extra pocket money over the
years, while teaching… (I think
being a waiter taught me pa-
tience…)
The bottom line is that at Reddam
House we recognize the importance
and necessity of preparing our stu-
dents for a world of work that
might not even exist at the moment.
By exposing our children to as
many interests as possible at school,
we are essentially inspiring them to
consider all of their options when it
comes to career choices.
Second skilling has two dimensions:
work and passion. Your second skill
should always be a passion so that
you love what you do and it is natu-
ral. Predicting what jobs will be out
there one day is a little more tricky.
Here you need to watch job trends
and hiring forecasts. All in all, an
exciting future lies ahead. Oh, and
give that waiter an extra tip!
Take care.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
In Term 3 we will be launching the Recorder Group program. These will be offered on a Wednesday as recorder group classes in groups of 4 students. These groups are highly recommended for all students wishing more individualised attention on recorder, and who would like to jump-start their progress. Through these groups, we hope to inspire our young musicians and select them for the study of other instruments taught at Reddam House.
Please e-mail Ms de Coning, should you wish to put your child on the waiting list: [email protected]
We would like to welcome our 2 new Music Teachers:
Guitar - Mr. Shaun Berry from All Stars Guitar Academy. He teaches contemporary acoustic and electric guitar, as well as bass guitar. See www.facebook.com/allstarsguitaracademy
Percussion specialist and educator - Mr. Clement Benny. He teaches drumset and marimba.
Please contact Ms Corrina de Coning on [email protected], should any student be interested in either
Taking up guitar or bass, for individual lessons or group lessons with Mr Berry or
Individual drumset and/or group djembe and marimba classes with Mr Benny (All abilities and ages welcome).
