School Representative / Sports Shirts We still seem to have missing school shirts from recent sports events. If you have any shirts at home please return them to

school immediately as they need to be reissued.

Dear Parents and Caregivers We now have 340 students! At this stage we will finish the year around 342 – 345 children which is the biggest Pongakawa has been in its history The Ministry of Education has approved extra staffing for 2019 meaning we will more than likely begin with fourteen rooms. Over the next week we hope to lock in place all our teaching staff for the coming year and any changes will be announced soon after. As we get close to the end of the year and children become tired and restless for the holiday break they sometimes make choices which are not in their best interests. We talk to students about “finishing strongly” about being the best they can be right until the last day. I think it is worthwhile for all parents to also have this type of discussion at home so everyone is getting the same message. In the last week or so I have needed to deal with a few occasions that could easily have been avoided had students taken time to stop and think before acting. This is never nice to have to deal with as a principal but keeping our standards high is an expectation we all have of Pongakawa and cannot and will not be allowed to slip at any time. I hope next week to have for you some competitive pricing for chrome books for those wishing to purchase them. I do have four Lenovo chrome books available. These are touch screen models which are also very robust which is ideal. These are being sold at $450.00 including gst. which is a great deal for a high quality product. I am not sure if the new ones will be less or more in price however these ae certainly great value for money. Four left and when they are gone, they are gone. Consider taking a Lenovo ThinkPad raffle ticket at the school office for $10.00 before they sell out. Many of our school students will be away next week on school camps and this will make marking our bus rolls more challenging. To assist us in getting buses away on time please be sure to let the office know if your arrangements are changing over the course of the week. If your child is away on camp we will have recorded this so no need to worry there, however, if you have younger children let the office know as per usual if you are picking them up etc. Have a great week. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal.

Important - Hand Foot and Mouth Disease We have seen a case of this at school today. Anyone, including adults can get hand, foot and mouth disease, but it is most common in children under 10. Preschool children tend to get sicker. If your child has hand, foot and mouth disease, they’ll have painful sores in their mouth and a rash with blisters on their hands and feet. Mild fever is usually the first sign of hand, foot and mouth disease. This starts 3–5 days after your child has been exposed to the disease. After the fever starts, your child may develop other symptoms, including: painful red blisters on their tongue, mouth, palms of their hands, or soles of their feet, loss of appetite, a sore throat and mouth, a general feeling of weakness or tiredness. The disease is usually mild and lasts 3–7 days. It can be confused with: chickenpox (but the chickenpox rash is all over the body) or cold sores in a child’s mouth. The only medicine recommended for hand, foot and mouth disease is paracetamol. Most blisters disappear without causing problems. In the mouth, however, some may form shallow, painful sores that look similar to cold sores. If your child’s mouth is sore, don’t give them sour, acidic, salty or spicy foods. Make sure they drink plenty of liquids to avoid getting dehydrated. How hand, foot and mouth disease is spread by coughing or sneezing, or contact with mucus, saliva, blisters or the faeces of an infected person. Children are contagious (‘catching’) for around 7 to 10 days. Keep your child home from childcare or school until blisters have dried. If blisters are able to be covered and the child is feeling well, they will not need to be excluded. Frequent hand washing helps decrease the chance of becoming infected. Staying away from others who have the disease and not sharing toys during the infection also helps prevent the disease. Call Healthline 0800 611 116 if you are unsure what you should do or contact your family GP or Medical Centre.
