Issue 20—Friday 25th June 2021
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Term 2 has flown by very quickly. I wish all students a relaxing Term 2 break. Term 3 will commence on Monday, 12th July. I encourage all families to involve our students in discussions of local, national and world events. This is an excellent way of promoting opportunities for engagement in social discussions amongst friends, at school and in the community. Two examples of events that are approaching are the 2021 Tour de France on 26th June and the Olympic Games in Japan commencing on 23rd July, 2021. Best wishes to our Emerson School community.

DIARY DATES 2021
We will be studying the value, Forgiveness, when we return to school on 12 July.
Forgiveness is about giving a person another chance if they have hurt you in some way. People who forgive others realise
that everyone makes mistakes. Forgiving people do not seek revenge or retaliation.

SPORTS STARS OF THE TERM
Each week, our Lego Clubs get together to work hard on some fantastic creations.
As a team, we must make a unanimous and fair decision about what we are going to build together. Sometimes our first
choice is not what the rest of the team want to build, but that’s okay! It can be nice to see our friends happy. We must
then allocate roles to each team member. These include an Architect, an Engineer and a Parts Supplier. Each role plays a
very important part in the construction of the masterpiece.
We must practice giving instructions, describing Lego pieces, listening to our friends, problem solving and conflict
resolution in order to complete the piece correctly.
It takes an enormous amount of teamwork and dedication to be a part of Lego Club. Take a look at our awesome dinosaur,
which took seven weeks to build!

Last term as part of the Advance Program a group of students from Middle and Senior School visited URBNSURF, Melbourne's first surf wave pool.
They took part in a surfing lesson on land and then headed out to face the waves. For most of the students it was their first time surfing, so lots of them were experiencing different feelings as they waded into the surf.
As their confidence and skills improved, students were riding waving waves, getting 'pitted' and having an awesome time.

Bethania M. The Forest (2021)
Acrylic paint on paper. 297 x 420 mm.
Beth’s artwork is a painting of trees in a forest.
She used acrylic paint applied with different
sized paintbrushes. Beth built the scene
starting with the background, a blue sky. Next,
she painted the green foliage of trees in the
distance. Then the tree trunks with dark and
light shades of bark, before finishing with the
leaves, fruits and flowers of those trees. Beth
mixed white and black with different colours
to make them lighter or darker.
The original image Beth was inspired by was
very blurry and had dull colours, but Beth’s
painting has bright, vivid colours and clear
lines. It looks much better than the original. Beth’s forest makes one feel relaxed and peaceful. It is an excellent example of how we
can be inspired by an idea, and bring new life to old images.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTISTS OF THE WEEK
Manaia S. Hatsune Miku (2021)
Coloured pencil on paper. 297 x 420 mm.
Miku has shiny hair and clothing reflecting light. You can see shadows on her
clothes and skin. To draw this character, Manaia traced the outline with
greylead pencil before rendering it with coloured pencil. She is highly skilled
at shading light and dark tonal values. Manaia presses the pencil very softly
to the page for gently colouring light areas, and presses the pencil harder to
the page for colouring darker areas.
Manaia’s artwork is of a Vocaloid software voicebank. Vocaloid is a singing
voice synthesizer product. The singing product is personified by the
computer-generated hologram of a 16-year-old girl with long turquoise
twintails. She is not an anime character… she is a vocal synthesizer, a
vocaloid library database plug-in – a voicebank!
Speech generating devices (SGD’s) are also known as voice output
communication aids. They can be used to supplement or replace speech for
individuals with severe speech impairments. The famous astrophysicist
Stephen Hawking, who passed away in 2018 at 76 years of age, was a
prominent SGD (speech generating device) user.

Benjamin B. Character Drawings (2021)
Acrylic paint on paper. 297 x 420 mm.
Ben’s wonderful artworks are imaginative coloured pencil drawings of various fictional characters. He freehand draws them from
memory. Ben is excellent at remembering and visualising what he wants to draw, before he puts pencil to paper.
The character Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981. Mario is a plumber from the Mushroom Kingdom. He has a twin brother
named Luigi. It has been 35 years since the first Super Mario Bros game was released. The platform game consists of different worlds
with several levels. Some levels end with a fortress or castle and a fight against Bowser or King Koopa. In Japan he is called Daimao -
Great Demon King. Bowsers ultimate goals are to kidnap Princess Peach, defeat Mario and conquer the Mushroom Kingdom.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTISTS OF THE WEEK
Thomas T. Cat Life (2021) Thomas T. Patterned Perspective Drawing (2021)
Copic marker illustration, graphic design. 29 x 42cm. Ink, technical drawing. 29 x 42cm.
Thomas’s artwork of a magazine cover design was completed using a combination of traditional drawing techniques and
contemporary image editing technology. The illustration of a cat was rendered with alcohol based copic markers on bleed proof paper.
The elements of the final design such as the background, foreground illustration, border, heading, sub-headings, and barcode were
added using Photoshop.
For technical drawing, Thomas used a ruler and set square to complete the scene of three boxes placed above, on, and below, a
horizon line. Each of their sides recedes to a vanishing point on the horizon. Thomas decorated the different sides of these 3D forms
with complex and intricate patterns. His great drawing skills, choice of interesting patterns, and awareness of angles on different sides
is exemplary.
