Dear Senior Men's Club Members,

I hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July with family and friends. Reflecting on one thing that makes our country great, I realize that it is the same thing that makes our club great, and that is the un-selfish caring and compassion of our volunteers.

Every week we are greeted by Bob Volger, Sal Testa, Michel Pilorget, Jerry Teagan and many oth-ers. Volunteers sell lunch tickets including Willie Wyatt, Dave Buckley, David Boring, Jim Regan, Mike Ryan, Jim Devereaux, George Hathaway, Robert Greening, Nate Judson, Jim Triano, Wal-ter Dailey and John Huckins (hopefully I haven't forgotten any of the ticket sellers). Denny Rasch and Al Wright sell 50-50 tickets with help from Tom Vroom and Ron Vitale.

The Speakers’ and head table name tags are typed and placed by Frank Romano, Willie Wyatt and Michel Pilorget. Plenty of our fellow members head up the many Sub Clubs and we have several

Board Members who do a ton of work as well. All of these mem-bers give unselfishly because they care about YOU.

FY 2019 ANNUAL DUES NOTICE WILL BE MAILED TO MEMBERS IN AUGUST 2018

Annual Dues payments are a major source of funds for SMC operations, covering the cost of monthly news-letters, sub-club support, memorial contributions, club directory, and various administrative expenses. Once again annual dues remain at only $35 for FY 2019. In an effort to keep dues from increasing, the SMC Board of Directors approved electronic newsletter distribution in 2016. Those members who wish to receive a paper newsletter copy through the mail will again be charged an annual fee of $15 to offset the cost of printing and mailing.

To ensure receipt of your annual dues statement all members will have their FY 2019 Dues Statement mailed to their address currently reported in our SMC Directory Database. Payment is due on or before October 1, 2018. For your convenience a pre- addressed envelope will be enclosed with your statement. Please include your dues statement and payment(s) in the pre-addressed envelope when sending payment by check or cash, $35 for dues and $15 newsletter mailing fee (if applicable). Checks can be made payable to “SMC of GP”.

Members will be able to pay dues and fees, plus sub-mit invoices with updated member information in person at a table that will be set up during future luncheon meet-ings. Also, payments can be made on-line via the SMC website using your credit card. If payment is made on-line, please note your credit card will also be charged a processing fee in addition to the $35 annual dues charge. Each member, whether requesting a mailed newsletter or not, should return the annual dues invoice and confirm your badge number, name, phone number, and current e-mail address reported to ensure the most current infor-mation is reported in our 2019 Directory.

Finally, Contributions by Life members, while not required, are extremely helpful in covering the cost of SMC operations and are greatly appreciated!

As in 2018, members will also be able to make con-tributions to the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe

Foundation when paying their dues for 2019. Please remember to make a separate check payment to the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Foundation for this contribution.

If you do not receive your FY 2019 Dues State-ment mailing, additional invoices and self-addressed envelopes will be available at future luncheons begin-ning August 14, 2018.

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR CLUB!

David Buckley, Treasurer

As some of you may know and for those who do not, we want you to know that the War Memorial offers some great day trips. They are entertaining, informative and convenient. You park your car at the War Memorial and a comfortable bus willtransport you, wait for you and return you to the War Memorial. NO worries about parking or long walks!

There will be fliers in the Ballroom detailing the trips for the remainder of 2018, or you can find theinformation online at warmemorial.org. These trips tend to sell out so try to register early. Spouses are, of course, welcome!

Investment Sub Club News

On Tuesday, June 26th, the new DIA Director, Salvador Salort-Pons, spoke to the Senior Men’s Club luncheon about his plans and priorities for the growth of the Detroit’s Institute of Arts. Salvador talked about a more prominent role for contemporary art at Detroit’s DIA and about creatinge a town square environment around the DIA site, similar to Paris and Madrid. He was born in Spain and at age 45, he was appointed in September to succeed retiring direc-tor Graham Beal. He had been head of the Eu-ropean art department and director of collection strategies and information. He has a Master’s de-gree in geography and history from the University of Madrid, a Master’s degree in business adminis-tration (SMU), and a PhD doctorate degree in the history of art from the University of Bologna. Salvador reported that the DIA museum has ownership of an unbelievable collection of rare arts. Our DIA has collected artists that no other museum collected. It owns the first Van Gogh self-portrait and the first Beckman, the first Brue-gel the Elder, the first Fuseli. Salvador has great plans for the DIA to instill the world’s artistic creativity for our community schools by organizing programs for students fo-cusing on creativity. There are many new plans to improve the artistic life of the DIA and the Detroit cosmopolitan area. Thank you, Salvador for an informative review of our new Detroit DIA Museum.

Speaker Report

On June 26, 2018 the SMC Investment Sub Club discussed the following interest rate and bond top-ics. Bonds matter even in rising rate environment. The average return of bonds during the periods of rising rates form Dec. 1940 thru Dec. 1980 was 3.3%. The Fed does not determine long term inter-est rates, economic growth does. the Market ex-pects a slow pace of rate hikes vs. Fed’s projections. Bonds provide diversification and perform better when stocks disappoint. Long duration bonds can be risky when rates rise. Interest rates have been falling for the past 30 years, closely following the nomi-nal GDP growth. Long duration bonds can be risky when rates rise. Long duration fixed income is sen-sitive to rising rates and is very volatile. Negative yields abroad have driven demand for US treasuries. Across developed international countries, yields are close to or below zero. This is driving demand for positive / higher – yielding US treasuries.

At the Senior Men’s Club luncheon on June 12th, our Speaker was the Grosse Pointe Farms Chief of Police, Dan Jensen. If you missed this luncheon, you missed a very interesting and in-formative talk. The discussion regarding the politics and policing in this day and age was very informa-tive. Chief Dan Jensen gave us a review of major police incidents that have changed the way of-ficers are viewed by the public and the necessary training of police officers that has taken place to address these changes. Chief Jensen also reported that one of the reoccurring police incidents in the Farms is stolen vehicles and items stolen from inside vehicles. He stated that almost all the vehicles were not locked and in one case the key was left in the vehicle. He advised us to keep our vehicles locked at all times.

Another area that he mention was the talk today about arming the school teachers for the children’s protection. Chief Jensen stated that this was not a good idea. Excessive training is given to police of-ficers in how to handle firearms in various conditions. He said, “it’s quite different from firing at a target that doesn’t fire back and firing at one that does.” That is one reason why training is so important. Thanks Dan Jensen for a very interesting and informative talk.

The Reading List Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egat

Jennifer Egan is an American writer currently living in Brooklyn. Although born in Chicago, she grew up in San Francisco and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before earning an M.A. from Cambridge. She came to New York in 1987 and worked various jobs while trying to start her career as a writer. Her first novel was published in 1995, followed by four more novels and several short story collections and numerous articles for publications such as the New York Times Maga-zine. Manhattan Beach, published last fall, has been awarded the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was nominated for a National Book Award, her second nomination. Her previous novel, A Visit From the Goon Squad, won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Crit-ics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times book prize. Manhattan Beach was chosen as the One Book, One New York Summer Read for 2018 and was named to 10 Best of 2017 lists by Amazon, Time, the BBC, NPR, PBS, Booklist, Kirkus Re-views, USA Today and many others. While some of her earlier work was experi-mental, with Manhattan Beach, Egan has given us a well-researched traditional work of historical fic-tion. In the first scene, set in 1934, Eddie Kerrigan takes his 11-year-old daughter Anna to a meeting with Dexter Styles, a gangster Eddie hopes to work for so that he can afford to care for his disabled younger daughter, Lydia. Eddie had been successful before losing everything in the Depression and re-sorting to work as a bag man for a longshoremen’s union boss, but Lydia needs an expensive new chair. Anna is close to her father, but his new job reduces his time with her, and makes his disappear-ance years later less painful for her. She is forced to drop out of college to help support her mother and sister. She gets a job in the Brooklyn Naval Yard in 1942 and becomes the Navy’s first female

diver, wearing s suit and helmet that weigh over 200 pounds out of the water. While the reader is carried along by the story of Anna, her mother, her aunt, and Nell, a friend she met in the Naval Yard, they know that there will be another meeting with Dexter Styles and that the mystery of Eddie will be revealed. With one exception, all of the Readers felt that Egan is an excellent writer and Manhattan Beach is worth recommending. We enjoyed being taken back to New York City during the war and watching the struggles of Anna against sexism in the Navy while we watched Styles navigate the world of organized crime. Some of us thought the period details may have been ladled on a little thicker than necessary, but at least they were accurate. One Reader sug-gested that given the large number of characters and episodes depicted, the book seemed more like a collection of stories than a novel. Others thought the main characters of Anna, Eddie and Styles tied the plot together nicely. Egan's writing can be quite evocative. Here is her description of Mr. Q, the 90-year-old mob boss that Styles reports to: “Mr. Q opened the door and sealed Dexter in his warm, fruit-smelling embrace. He was hulking and cavernous at once, browned to mahogany. Time had enlarged him in an organic, mineral way, like a tree trunk, or salts accepting in a cave. The frailty of his advanced age showed itself in the silty, tidal labors of his breath.” One of the major themes of the book is the sea. Each of the major characters seemed to have an af-finity for the sea, whether it was Anna’s desire to be under it, Style’s need to be near it, or Eddie’s use of it as an escape.

Join us on July 17th at 5 pm for our discussion of Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. We will meet at the home of Bob Wrosch 22801 Lakeshore Drive, St Clair Shores. RSVP to (248) 609-9364.
