JUSTICE AND MERCYThis term the Justice and Mercy students have been learning about homelessness and organising an awareness-based campaign involving the whole school community. For the past two weeks, ten clothing collection bins from the St Vincent de Paul Society have called the SAC foyer ‘home’ and will do so until Monday 21 September (Week 10). Until then, you or your daughter are invited to bring in any good second-hand clothing that you may like to donate to Vinnie’s. Tonight, Friday 11 September, a number of intrepid Year 12 students and staff will participate in a homelessness sleep-out at school, using the donated items from the Vinnie’s bins to keep them warm and hearing from several speakers who have either experienced homelessness or volunteer with groups, such as the Edmund Rice Network, Vinnie’s or the Hutt Street Centre. By the end of the sleep-out we hope that students will emerge with a greater appreciation for what they have, a broader understanding of homelessness and a desire to continue being advocates for those in need. We hope to be able to return all ten collection bins to Vinnie’s filled to the brim and we especially thank members of the very generous SAC community who have already contributed to the cause. See next fortnight’s newsletter for photographs and student reflections on the sleep-out experience.

SACRAMENTS UPDATE

The Sacraments of Confirmation & First Eucharist

The Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist were celebrated recently in St Patrick’s Church, Adelaide.Fr Philip Marshall, the Vicar General, was the celebrant for the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday 29 August 2015 for eighteen Year 4 students (listed below). He reminded the girls of the importance of using the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: knowledge, understanding, reverence, wisdom, right judgement and courage, wonder and awe as gifts that we receive to use throughout our lives. On Saturday 5 September, the Sacrament of the First Eucharist was celebrated by Fr Peter Rozitis. Nineteen students received the body and blood of Christ for the first time in the presence of family, friends and parishioners. This now signifies that these students are fully initiated members of the Catholic Church and are continuing the mission of Jesus. We thank all the sponsors, families and teachers who assisted in their preparations. Also, thank you to those families who contributed donations to Catherine House. These are due by Thursday 17 September.Congratulations to the following students:Angelica Alfaro 4SLChantelle Beddow 4GBIsabella Binetti 4SLClaudia Bressan 4GBFrancesca Capozzi 4KBRita Caprioli 4KBChiara Centofanti 4SLIsabelle Chen 4SLCruz Choe 5JA (First Eucharist only)Ava Czuchwicki 4SLCartia De Ieso 4KBSienna Grech 4SLLauren James 4KBLaura Pinto Lozano 4GBHiruni Pullukkutti Arachchige Don 4SLTahlia Reid 4SLImogen Szegedi 4SLClare Wilks 4SLMia Young 4KBCongratulations to Jasemin Hamdemir 5JA who celebrated her First Eucharist on Saturday 15 August in St Pius X Church, at Windsor Gardens.

Students’ Reflections

I felt nervous before both ceremonies because I did not know what to expect. After the ceremonies, I felt proud and confident and I am happy I am now a special member of the Catholic Church. Lauren James 4KB

I enjoyed receiving the bread and wine that became the body and blood because it was a first time experience. After the ceremony I felt really excited and cannot wait to receive these at another Mass in the future. Chantelle Beddow 4GM

I felt really good because I was being confirmed into the Catholic Church. In class, we researched a saint to be our role model. We made a sash with a cross, a candle, our saint name and a dove to symbolise the Holy Spirit. On the Saturday that I celebrated my Confirmation, I felt ecstatic to be welcomed into the Catholic Church. The priest gave some people little cards with the names of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. I got to choose a gift, so I placed my hand in the box and I pulled out the Gift of Wisdom.

I was sitting nervously in the front pew leading up to the moment when Fr Philip said ‘Clare, be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit,’ I responded ‘Amen’. At that moment I was nervous and excited. The priest smiled and said ‘Peace be with you.’ I answered with a happy voice, ‘And with your spirit.’ I smiled and sat down in my pew. Angelica Alfaro 4SL

Part way through our Confirmation we had to go up to the front and say that we agreed to our faith. Then, when the priest approached us we had to stand up with our sponsor’s right hand on our right shoulder and be anointed with the chrism on our forehead, making the sign of the cross. Some of us got to pick out one of the gifts we receive when we do our Confirmation. I pulled out Right Judgement. Imogen Szegedi 4SL

When I had my Confirmation and First Eucharist I felt very excited and nervous. At first I thought that I might forget the words but then I felt confident and relieved when I finished. Normally, I feel like a Mass takes a long time but this time I felt like it finished so quickly. It was a great experience that I will never forget in my life. I had a great time celebrating my Confirmation and First Eucharist. Laura Pinto Lozano 4GB

LIVING ARTISTS AT SACThroughout August our students have been celebrating the South Australian Living Artists Festival. They have both viewed and exhibited their artwork in a range of exhibitions around Adelaide.

Plants To Pixels Photography Workshop & SALA Exhibition

During Term 3 the Art students from 9NW and 9LF had the fantastic opportunity to take part in photography workshops organised by the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. The girls completed three practical workshops. They learnt a lot about photography and how to use a 60X lens. After these fun and inspiring workshops the girls put their skills into practice, taking close-up photographs of nature which they took back to school and are currently developing into lino prints. During the SALA Festival, the Botanic Gardens held an exhibition of students’ photographs created in response to these workshops, titled ‘Plants to Pixels’. Four SAC students, Elizabeth Jennings 9NW, Zahra Zamanzadeh 9LF, Abigail Edwards 9LF and Meghan Keane 9NW, exhibited their photographs. We congratulate these girls and all Year 9 students for their enthusiastic involvement in these workshops. At the start of Term 4 we will exhibit their stunning photographs and the lino prints in the SAC foyer.

Secondary Student Drawing Exhibition at The Art Gallery of South Australia

Our talented Senior Secondary students have their art pieces displayed in the SALA Secondary Student Drawing Exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Haneen Hussein 12CW, Sarah Hussein 12MN, Sishi Wu 10RG, Brianna Roy 10PA and Jennifer Lai 10KI exhibited their work which was produced as a result of the life drawing, self-portraiture and fashion illustration workshops at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Their drawings are exceptional and we congratulate them on their skill and enthusiastic involvement in these experiences.

During Term 2 students from Reception to Year 12 were invited to submit artworks to be part of the St Aloysius College submission for the Junior Art Exhibition at the Royal Adelaide Show. The girls excitedly created a large variety of art and craft pieces and the Art teachers had the overwhelming job of choosing twenty pieces to enter out of the over 100 pieces submitted! The quality of work and the enthusiasm was so high that we decided to exhibit all the work in the school’s foyer. On Thursday 3 September I was honoured to represent SAC at the Royal Adelaide Show exhibition opening and was delighted to see all the work we had submitted displayed with many of them receiving a Certificate of Commendation and two pieces receiving a Commemorative Medal. These certificates will be presented to the girls at an assembly later in the term. I would like to congratulate all the students who submitted work and the 21 students listed below who were chosen to represent our school:

YEAR 5 NEWS

This term, the Year 5 students have been rehearsing and performing plays. They were required to read play scripts, negotiate roles, memorise lines and work corroboratively in order to prepare a performance. Play scripts were written by Aaron Shepherd and included the following:• The Adventures of Mouse Dear - a folktale from Southeast

Asia with a theme of wits versus power• One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes - a folktale from Germany

with a theme of being different• Master Maid - a Norwegian folktale with a theme of

stubbornness and heroism. Groups performed their play in the Drama Theatre in front of parents, grandparents and other students. Below are some of their reflections.

Ms Joanne VillisYEAR 5 TEACHER

When our group was starting I was really nervous and excited (mostly nervous). We were soon introduced and revealed from behind the curtain. I eventually got used to being in front of an audience and I started doing the things that we rehearsed but I was still nervous. Zoe Hosking 5JV

My Mum helped me memorise my lines by making me repeat my lines every day. When our play started my voice echoed and it became louder so that the back rows could hear it, which was surprising. Ekjot Joshan 5JV

My Mum and Dad came to watch. Mum thought Shani, who was playing ‘Two Eyes’, cried realistically and my Dad liked all of the plays. When I was waiting for my turn to go on, half of me wanted to go on but the other half did not. When I was on stage I wasn’t scared anymore. Thao Thanh Nguyen (Amy) Pham 5JV

Year 5 students have been learning about fantasy texts this term. We have learnt about many types of magical creatures including dragons, trolls, nymphs and pixies and objects such as wands and portals. The students wrote their own fantasy stories and created a picture to show the setting and characters.

Students’ Fantasy Stories

“Help! Help!” shrieked Dorothy. She beat her gigantic wings furiously but she was no match for the army of wizards. With their magic they pulled her out of her cave, struggling and fighting. Dorothy’s best friend, Danny, stormed out after her, scattering soldiers left and right in his anger. He roared, sending spurts of flame flying out of his mouth but a well-aimed spell made him start coughing and spluttering. One of the men yelled out and with a bright flash and loud pop, they vanished.Adie Patrick 5NW

Morgana walked through the rickety doorway stepping on her tippi- toes so the nails wouldn’t cut her feet. She grabbed the handle of the bucket. It felt brittle in her hands. She tore a strip off the bottom of her frock to wipe her face from the sweat that dripped across her face. As she walked along the dusty old trail that guided her to the well, she flicked her finger to make the pebbles slide across to the green trees.

The sparks that flew off of her finger tips drew a pattern across the sky that made her think of her mum. Where was she? What was she doing? Why did she leave? Morgana didn’t want to be filled with sorrow so she kept walking down the path. Her hair flew in the wind like waves crashing on a hot summer’s day. She stopped to a halt. What was that? There was something colourful in the distance. It had dusty cinnamon crosses and green sides luring Morgana’s soul towards it. Before she knew it, Morgana was walking through the lush trees and bushes to find the object in all its glory. She stepped through. Morgana had no idea what she was getting herself into.Meg Schwarz 5NW

Bang! “What was that?” the mermaid Annabelle yelled. She was alone in the castle and had been for quite a while. Her father had been at work and her sisters had gone for a swim. “I think it’s coming from the wardrobe”, and began to swim slowly towards the wardrobe. All of a sudden, with no warning, the doors opened and a tornado threw leaves and dust and strong winds started gushing at her. Suddenly a scary green hand with long dirty fingernails slowly crept out of the wardrobe and pulled on Annabelle’s arm. It started dragging her towards the cupboard. Annabelle tried to pull away but she could not fight it. She was pulled in, then the door slammed behind her. She was gone!Charli Horn 5NW

The task was to construct one cubic metre. We found there were twelve edges to this cube. The project involved the use of team work, brain power and, most of all, metre rulers. It was quite challenging. We really had to make the most of the given space and time. Dallas, Jamie & Eliane

Year 5 Measurement

Measuring Volume - 1m3

During class, we all played a game called ‘Tiddlywinks’. This game includes a measuring tape, two counters and chalk. We started by drawing a chalk line on the ground. We placed one counter on the ground and used the other one to push on the first counter. The first counter flew out for a short distance. We used our tape measures to then measure how far the counter had gone. We used metres and centimetres to calculate the distance. Summer, Cruz & Alisha

Linear Measurement

In Term 3, we learnt how to measure the mass of things by using scales. We recorded the mass of different objects using grams and kilograms. We measured the mass of books, pencil cases, candles and lots of other things. We also had to estimate how much we thought things would weigh. In one lesson, we used play dough to test whether the shape of an object affects its weight.Banen & Charlotte

Measuring Mass

We learned that capacity is defined as the amount of space inside a container. We used rice to fill containers then measured that rice using measuring jugs. First, we had to estimate the capacity of the container. The unit of measurement used in capacity is litres and millilitres. Amelia, Mikayla & Sophie

Time

We have been studying time and how it is used in everyday life. We used stop watches to measure how many things we could do in one minute. Anna & Jasemin

Measuring 1 Kilometre

We used a trundle wheel to measure one kilometre around the school. Each 100m we put down a cone and recorded where it was on our school map. The one kilometre wound right through each courtyard and even into the undercroft.Alyssa, Alisha & Olivia

Perimeter

This term we learnt how to calculate perimeter. We found that there were many different formulas to find the perimeter of a rectangle. A formula is when you follow a certain way of multiplying or adding to calculate perimeter. Formulas for perimeter can be length + length + width + width or length x 2 plus width x 2. We practised measuring the perimeter of many things such as the water fountain.Ashlyn & Chelsea

Measuring Area

We have been learning about the area of different shapes. You can calculate the area of rectangles using a formula. We found that length x width = area. (L x W = A). We were given many shapes to calculate and compare the area and perimeter. Area is very useful for builders and for special occasions such as weddings. Olivia & Hope

Measuring Volume

We measured the volume of containers using 2cm blocks. We also constructed prisms using 2cm blocks. The formula we used was length x width x depth = volume (L x W x D = V).Mya, Poppy-Boo & Holly

Measuring Area in Hectares

One of the units for measuring area is the hectare. We had a lot of fun using a trundle wheel to measure a hectare and recording this onto a map of the school. A hectare is 100m x 100m.Natalia & Adrienne

Measuring Temperature

In Maths we used our device to check the temperature in Adelaide. When we started the lesson, the temperature was 10.8 °C. About ten minutes later, it had risen to 11 °C.Mahlet, Isabella & Clerisse

YEAR 6 DEBATING TEAMIn Terms 2 and 3, Year 6 students Teja Hasani 6LM, Monttana Christensen 6LM, Fatema Momenzada 6SH, Jessie Cotton 6SH and Hayley Gerrard 6RL gave up more than one lunchtime a week to be part of the 2015 Year 6/7 Debating team.

Each week they brainstormed, researched and wrote formal speeches about various topics. They impressed us with their enthusiasm, dedication and attitude towards learning as much as they could about different themes. They gave up their Thursday nights to debate against other schools at Nazareth College.

The girls constantly impressed us with their confidence and speaking skills and were formally acknowledged at the Primary Assembly in Week 6 where they received debating pins.

We congratulate the girls again on their efforts this year.

YEAR 9 HISTORY - PASSION POEMSStudents from 9VC are learning about how the modern world has developed through human construction and interaction.

The unit on ‘Emancipation of the Slave Trade’ was aptly viewed through the film ‘Amazing Grace’ and the work of politicians PM Pitt and William Wilberforce. Such inspirational political and humanitarian work led to the following responses from students in the class through poems. The focus from the film was on the enabling power of ‘passion’.

ITALIAN STUDY TOURMOUNT CARMEL WELCOMES SAC STUDENTS!

On Wednesday 2 September a group of SAC students visited Mount Carmel College in preparation for their study tour to Italy at the end of this year. This experience gave us an opportunity to get to know the students from Mount Carmel College who are also participating in this Italian Study Tour.

The morning began with simple introductions and ‘get to know you’ games were played. We then enjoyed a morning tea and finished off with designing our jumpers that will commemorate the trip. I think it is safe to say that all the students are very excited about having this wonderful opportunity to visit Italy at the end of the year and we look forward to seeing the Mount Carmel College students again on tour while enjoying this experience with them.

PRIMARY SPORT

After School Sport - Term 3

There is only one more week of Primary sport to go for the term and what an incredibly busy but exciting couple of terms we’ve had. I wish our netball, lacrosse and indoor soccer teams the best of luck in the final round of matches.

During Week 9 the very last of the Come ‘n’ Try programs will also conclude for 2015. Throughout the year approximately 160 students from Reception to Year 3 have participated in the Come ‘n’ Try program each term! I would like to acknowledge and thank the Primary teachers for their support. Without their help the sessions would not be able to go ahead.

After School Sport - Term 4

Students who are interested in participating in after school sport in Term 4 should have now returned their nomination forms (they were due Friday 4 September 2015). Students who have nominated to be involved in beach volleyball, lacrosse clinics, water polo clinics or basketball clinics will receive information packs in Week 1 of Term 4 via the students’ school email account.

SAPSASA Sport

On Tuesday 1 September a selected number of Years 4-7 students participated in the SAPSASA East Adelaide District Athletics Carnival at SANTOS Stadium. The occasional shower throughout the day didn’t deter the girls from competing extremely well and representing SAC with pride.

Congratulations to many of our students who placed within the top four of their event. Students who may be successful in being selected in the East Adelaide team will be notified in the coming weeks.

A big thank you to student officials Louisa Nunke 8KM and Sophie King 8KM and Ms Kamala Bode for helping out on the day.

Other News

On Wednesday 12 August you may have seen a few SAC students on the news! The girls from 2AS were invited by Netball SA to attend a press release to announce a new sponsorship for Netball SA and the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

The students were lucky enough to be involved in a netball clinic run by one of the Thunderbirds players, Ms Madeleine Proud and they also met the Recreation and Sport Minister, Mr Leon Bignill. The girls had an absolute ball being involved in the clinics and having photos taken to promote Grassroots Sports Club.

Term 3 Holiday Sports

There are a number of Come ‘n’ Try activities available these holidays for school aged students to be involved in. Please see the images on the following page for more information.

Catholic Schools Music Festival 2015

The Catholic Schools Music Festival has been running since 1989 and its goal is to support music arts education in our schools, providing an outlet for young people to perform in a professional setting. The SAC CSMF Choir and Senior Choir are performing on the Opening Night on Monday 21 September at 7pm in the Festival Theatre. Tickets are available through BASS (Tel:131 246). Students’ Reflection

The choir rehearses several times during the week with Ms Catherine Jones and have had the pleasure of also working with Ms Emma Knights. Ms Denise Rothall, the Festival Director, occasionally comes into our school to check on our progress through the songs. The best things about choir would definitely be learning the songs and choreography while making new friends throughout the three terms. We enjoy learning the songs because each song makes us express a different emotion while singing. The choreography is easy to learn, entertaining to look at and adds another dimension to the show. Everybody in the choir learns the different techniques it takes to put on a great performance and we have learnt how to sing with so many different emotions as each song has a different meaning to each person in the choir and in the audience.

During the three terms of choir rehearsals we have faced many challenges. The biggest challenge was having to learn the words and choreography for nineteen songs! On the performance night we all look forward to singing the songs while having a great time with all the other schools. The Year 6s have a chance to return to the choir again next year but for the Year 7s this is, sadly, their last year in the choir. At the festival the audience can expect enthusiastic singing and dancing with entertaining supporting acts. The support acts are different musical groups and soloists from different schools that come on in between songs. This year our SAC Senior Choir is honoured to be chosen as a support act.

The audience will experience different emotions as the songs go by. The ending medley is full of songs that will bring the audience to tears. It is definitely a show worth seeing!
