PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Planning for the new school year is becoming somewhat frantic and I haven’t even put up any Christmas decorations yet! It’s still only November! With anticipated enrolments for the start of 2018 now well into the 900s we expect to be welcoming some new teaching staff into the school as well as our many new students. Once again we will have all new students arrive to start on the second school day – Wednesday 31st January, while our

existing and continuing students will be back on Tuesday 30th. Six new demountable classrooms will be delivered over the holiday period to sit uncomfortably along the high school fence facing our grass play area. Two more will be placed down near Caballo St alongside the current 2C and 2TL classrooms. We are fortunate to have such welcoming and flexible students and families in our community in these exciting times for Ironbark Ridge PS. A Spectacular Show! A group of dancers from Year 5 and 6 will perform this weekend as part of the amazing production that is

“Schools Spectacular”, at Olympic Park. Our team of students and teachers (well done Ms Walker and Ms Kop!) have been practising since the beginning of the year to prepare. With over 5000 performers all on stage for the big finale I’m sure it’s going to be exactly that… spectacular, and I can’t wait to be sitting in the audience during the Friday night performance Today’s matinee performance was attended by 60 interested students from our Stage 2 and Stage 3 classes. I know they enjoyed supporting their schoolmates (and trying to spot them amongst the other 5000 on the stage!)

Pavers Our long-awaited signature pavers have been delivered and will be laid under our brick COLAs in the upcoming weeks. Please have a look and find your names there if you purchased a paver through this fundraiser over the past few years. Student Leaders for 2018 With speeches & student voting now complete, I want to give a huge cheer to all of our current Year 5 students who nominated for our student leadership positions for 2018. We are always impressed by the level of commitment and enthusiasm as well as confidence, skills and responsibility you show. We will announce next year’s student leadership team at our upcoming Celebration Day assembly on Monday 11th December. P&C Annual General Meeting Next Wednesday 29th November we will hold the Annual General Meeting of our Parents and Citizens’ Association at 7pm in our school Library. I invite you to attend and be a part of discussions about our school and ways you can support the outstanding learning of our students in the year to come. Light refreshments are always served at the meetings. No students or children to attend, please. Current financial members may vote and even nominate for 2018 P&C positions Chess – One-Day State Finals Team Good luck to Imran (5/6F), Moazam (5/6F) and Aneesh (5KD) as they head off this Sunday 26th to play at North Sydney Boys High in the NSW State Final of the Junior Chess League One-Day Teams Challenge. The competition from other primary schools will be extremely tough but we know these three boys will perform very well and represent Ironbark Ridge proudly. Go Ironbark Ridge! * Challenge: Can you see the move Aneesh should play with his knight? Fundraiser - Wear Something Yellow on Friday Dec 1st Anoushka and Trinica (both 6H) have organised a student awareness-raiser / fund-raiser to support students with special needs in Uganda through the Australian ChanCes charity. Students will be discussing the difficulties faced by other students who are less fortunate than themselves – either by having a special need or by living in a third-world country. On Friday 1st December students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and they can wear a small yellow accessory (eg. wristband, hair scrunchy/bow, hat, etc.) to indicate their support for the good cause. Thanks to the girls for their initiative in proposing and organising this event. I look forward to seeing many of you over the coming weeks at one of the many end-of-year functions and celebrations we have planned. Nick Thomson Principal

Awards of Excellence When students receive 3, 6 or 7 Star Awards during their time at Ironbark Ridge, they earn an Award of Excellence. These students receive an ‘Award of Excellence’ badge, and have a personalised testimonial written by their classroom teacher. They are also treated to morning tea – arguably the best part about receiving the award! We are very proud of our Semester 2 Award of Excellence recipients:

Schools Spectacular This is the week! 13 of our students, under the expert guidance of Mrs Walker and Mrs Kop, will be performing in 4 performances of Schools Spectacular this Friday and Saturday. This is the culmination of many months of auditions, rehearsals and behind the scenes preparation. We took 50 students from Years 3-6 to Qudos Bank Arena today to watch the matinee performance. Everyone agreed it was a sensational show. Thanks again to Mrs Walker, Mrs Kop and all the amazing parents for giving up their time to provide this incredible opportunity for our students.

Pulse Choir Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of sitting in the audience at the Opera House for the annual Pulse Concert – an incredible showcase of talented public school choirs, bands, dance groups and drama ensembles. Our students were in the primary school mass choir, led by Ms Hoggan and Mrs Robson. They relished the opportunity to sing on such a prestigious stage. Congratulations and thank you to our Pulse choir, Ms Hoggan and Mrs Robson. Kind Regards Kerrie Pho Deputy Principal

ADMINISTRATION NEWS

A warm welcome to our 2018 Kindergarten families. If you were unable to attend the Parent Information Night on Tuesday 21st November, your child’s information pack is available for pick up from the School office. It includes your child’s Best Start Assessment time and start date time for your child. Please call into the office between 9.00 and 3.00 to collect your pack.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school in 2018. Allison Batten School Administration Manager Canteen News With the end of term fast approaching, keep checking on Flexischools as some of our items are running low, and we will not have our full range of items for lunches. We endeavour to substitute items with something similar, after checking with the students for their preference. Canteen Orders Save time and order your child's lunch online. Online ordering is a convenient way to place orders with the school canteen, providing a 24/7 payment and ordering system that can be accessed from home, work or a mobile device.

No more fumbling around for coins in the morning, sending kids to school with cash, or lost and illegible orders. Online orders are faster and more accurate giving peace of mind that your order and payment is received accurately at the school. Advanced features such as allergy warnings also help to alert canteen staff when preparing meals and help keep children safe. Doris Cull School Canteen Manager

KINDY CAPERS Our Kindergarten students are very excited as their first year of school is coming to the end, however we do still have 3 weeks of learning time to finish. Library borrowing has now ended for the year. Any library books you may still have at home need to be returned as soon as possible.

Our end of year movie day is fast approaching on Thursday 14th December at events Cinema. A note will be sent out closer to the date with all of the details you will need. We are all looking forward to the event.

The STEM activities we are working on for the fairytale unit have been very exciting and engaging for the students. The fairy tale unit will finish this week and we will then be learning about “Ferdinand the Bull” ready for our movie day. Dates for the Diary: Celebration Day – Monday 11th December. All Kindergarten students receive a certificate to commemorate the completion of Kindergarten. At the conclusion of the ceremony, there will be a Parent Helpers Morning Tea in Kindy Meerkats room. All school and classroom helpers as well as scripture teachers are very welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there. Homework has now finished for the year but home readers will continue to be sent home. Have a great weekend. Kindy Teachers

STAGE 1 SNIPPETS Wow we have reached week 7 and the end of the year is coming up fast!

A reminder that swim scheme starts Monday 27th November (week 8) and runs for 2 weeks. If your child is participating in swim scheme they will have received a note this week in regards to what they will need to bring. But just in case that note has been placed in a “safe place” by your child here is a little recap.

Please remember to pack the following items in your child’s bag on Monday:

- Swimmers - towel - goggles - thongs/crocs (not to be worn to school, children will change into them just before they depart from

school and will change back into sport uniform upon their return) - plastic bag for wet swimmers and towel

We encourage that you show your child how to change out of and into their sport uniform, as well as how to pack their wet clothes into a plastic bag. This will assist us with smooth transitions throughout the fortnight. Please make sure that your child’s clothing has been labelled with their name. As swimming lessons are held over the lunch period we recommend that lunch orders are not placed during swim scheme. Doris has advised, however, that she can provide lunch early if needed. We have loved seeing all our amazing Stage One students utilising their home readers and library books this year. As we are coming to the end of the school year please have a quick check in school bags and around the house for any classroom home readers or library books These need to be returned as soon as possible for end of year stocktake. Stage One teachers

STAGE 2 SNIPPETS The end of the year is nigh and already celebrations have started at Ironbark Ridge PS. This week Stage 2 Award of Excellence recipients attended their celebratory morning tea with Mrs Cauchi and Mr Brent. We would just like to take this opportunity to applaud all those students who have quietly and steadfastly achieved their goals. On Wednesday December 13th Stage 2 students will have their End of Year Party Day. Students will walk up to the Rouse Hill Town Centre watch a movie then return for a lunch time barbeque. Students will need to wear school uniform on the day.

Swim Scheme commences in week 8 for some Year 3 students. Year 3s will depart at 1250 and return by 220. If your child is attending swim scheme it would be best if they could bring their own lunch to school. If they are unable to bring lunch and require a lunch order they will need to collect it from the canteen and eat it at recess. Students will change into their swimmers at school and change out of their swimmers

upon return to school. Please ensure that swimming students have their goggles, towel and thongs or crocs packed in a separate bag inside their school bag. Kindly provide a second smaller plastic bag for your child to place their wet swimmers in when they return to school and change. Students in Year 4 in 2018 who have not yet indicated that they wish to attend Broken Bay Camp in March 2018 may still pay deposits online and forward permission notes to the office. Camp promises to be an exciting, fun filled three days. As well students are provided with the opportunity to develop confidence, resilience and learn some fantastic life skills in a nurturing context supported by friends and teachers. If your child is attending Year 4 Broken Bay Camp kindly complete the following online medical survey for your child: https://sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/facilities/medicalandconsentform Parents/guardians must complete this form on behalf of their child. You will need the following details: Booking Number: 520885 Booking Start Date: 05/03/2018 Booking Venue: Broken Bay Sport and Recreation Centre Name of Organisation: Ironbark Ridge Public School Borrowing from the school library has now ceased. Students will continue to visit the library for weekly sessions for the remainder of the term. Please return any outstanding books as soon as possible. Students will continue to be able to access quality reading materials at their appropriate level via Reading Express throughout the upcoming holiday period. As the weather becomes increasing warm please provide you child with a water/drink bottle to use during school time. School hats are always compulsory for play at school. Congratulations to all our students who have danced their hearts out at School Spectacular 2018. A huge thanks also to Mrs Walker and Mrs Kop for their fine efforts in preparing our student so well. Have a great weekend!

The Stage 2 team.

STAGE 3 SNIPPETS What a lovely week of celebrations and recognition of achievements we have had. Our students were recognised at a special morning tea and were then presented with their well-deserved “Award of Excellence” badges. They have certainly striven for success, persevering and employing a growth mindset to attain such a high standard. With students of this calibre at IRPS, we certainly have some awesome role models for other students. Our PULSE choir performed as part of the massed choir at the Opera House last Thursday. The performance was certainly a success causing many a pleasurable shiver as they sang along to the harmonious strains of the pipe organ and full orchestra. What a wonderful experience for our talented singers.

Pulse Choir having fun!

Pulse Choir at the Opera House

This week has seen our School Spectacular students putting on a fantastic display along with hundreds of other students. They always do us proud! Our leaders also had the opportunity to attend a follow-up leadership day, which they no-doubt enjoyed. Congratulations to all our 2018 leadership nominees who presented their speeches to the whole school this week. Although nerve-wracking, they all did a fantastic job with all of them being worthy candidates. What a feeling of pride for teachers as they watch students who have grown in so many ways into confident, aspiring

leaders! We will all find out on Celebration Day who our successful top four girls and top four boys are, who will be leading our ever-growing school next year. Further congratulations are extended to all our students who performed exceptionally well in the Maths Olympiad teams. Of the 1394 teams across Australasia, Ironbark Ridge A placed 3rd overall and our B team placed 21st – what outstanding achievements! Special mention goes to our perfect scorers – no mean feat – Darshanik A, Simone D, Samuel E, Sienna G, Taehoon K, Ethan M, James N and Meagan W. Congratulations too, to our students in the top 2% who had only one error across five contest papers – Daniel L, John P, Dhwani P, Nithya S, Yash S, Shivani S, Amelie T, Lucas T and Tam V. A further nineteen students scored within the top 10% overall. We are incredibly proud of our talented mathematicians. Our in-house transition program has been running smoothly. Students are getting an idea of what high school entails, especially as far as moving around, reading timetables and meeting deadlines go. If we notice any students not coping with this, we chat with them and devise strategies to help them. Please be aware that this transition time can be very easy for many, but also very stressful for some – the fear of change or the uncertainty of the unknown. Should you have any concerns, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher. We’re sure students will feel a lot more comfortable once they have attended their official high school orientation days. Your children may come home in the next couple of weeks excitedly discussing circuits, powering light bulbs, the power of batteries, etc. This is the culmination of our Science exploration into electricity and energy. Although we have had numerous safety discussions with our classes, please reiterate to your child that what they’ve done in class must not be replicated at home, unless you’re supervising them. As a stage, our PBL focus this past fortnight has been particularly on being SAFE. To demonstrate this, we are keeping a watchful eye on students being sun-safe (ie: wearing their hats when out on the playground), as well as considering the games they play and the areas in which these are played. This is for the safety of all students. We ask for your assistance in this regard – perhaps have a chat with your child about how they consider others around them in a safe, responsible and respectful manner.

With all our end-of year celebrations, please ensure you have checked dates, times and venues carefully. Week 9, Tuesday 5 December, is the Year 6 Farewell at the Novotel Norwest. The doors will open for students at 6:30pm. Please understand that we ask parents

to remain outside – the gardens are a lovely backdrop for photographs. Teachers will be taking numerous photos of the décor and of students enjoying themselves inside all evening. All photos will be made available for students to download. Please assist us in making sure your children’s phones and cameras are left at home for the evening. Parents are invited into the ballroom at 8:15pm to enjoy a dance and some cake with your children as they say farewell to their primary school years in a special way. The farewell ends at 8:30pm. We look forward to a busy but enjoyable last few weeks of 2017. Thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year. Stage 3 Teachers

As Time Ages - Author: Natalie Z 6H

I promised to take him there. I promised that one day I’ll help him succeed. That dream is beyond my reach, but I will help him get to it, so he can reach out and grab his dream by two hands, then nurture it into its full potential. I promised, I’d take him there. The room was light, lit by candles burning strongly, not giving in to the persistent blow of the wind. The strength that the fire gave was immense; it was so strong yet delicate. It could light up the darkest room. It was power. I had to be his candle. His strength. His hope. So we set out on the journey, the journey of his success and happiness. The journey was long and ragged. There was no smooth road or straight path, it was an uphill climb. I felt tired, exhausted, yet, he bounded up each obstacle with more energy. Every rock was jumped over, every wild animal was smiled at, and everything was overcome with his emotions of joy and happiness. He could go on forever, but I don’t know how long I can keep up. He is a young child with big dreams, hope and ambitions. I know I can’t support him forever, just until he sees his dream and until I am no longer needed. I climbed up mountains and cliffs, age wearing me down even more. As I trudged along him, he was bounding beside me with energy, it still rains, but, under my protection he is safe, warm and still with me. As the days went on, closer to his dream, the rain only fell harder. I look beside me and held out my hand for him to hold, but I ended grasping at the wind and rain and staring straight into the dark clouds. I looked forward again, only to see him alone, strutting with his head held high, the rain not affecting him. As if the rain broke through my protection, my face was suddenly wet with the rain, or my sadness. He doesn’t need an umbrella anymore, he has grown. He only needs himself to move forward. “You’re only dragging me down!” His voice echoes through my head.

“I’m just trying to keep you safe.” I really am.

He continues as time passes, I see everything around me growing, then going. I look forward to see him growing. I see myself, ageing. I try to keep up with him anyway, I don’t want to lose him. I keep him within my

sight, where nothing can hurt him, but, in his sight is only his goal, his dream. He never looks back at me, he only looks ahead, at his future. He finally sees it. The dream of a little boy, a reality. Around us is a field, flowers with the shape of clouds, grass that’s long and thin. He reaches towards the dream, hand held up high. I stand beside him for the first time in a long time. He doesn’t need my protection anymore, and I smile. His dream radiates light onto his face, leaving a smile. I look around and see the journey we have gone on to get here. It started and ended, our journey and my promise. I lay down amongst the flowers, he’s finally looking at me. “Thank you.” He says. I smile at the sight of his eyes and voice. I close my eyes and, as if the rain started again, my face was wet. Not with my tears, but with his. “Thank you.” He says again as I faded into the memory of his past.

Chinese News! Nǐmen hǎo! 你们 好!

Although there were 40 families who attended our information night, we currently have only 15 students who have paid their deposit for China. I will be asking our new class of Year 5 OC students if they are interested in attending, however, with such a small number of students the trip will not go ahead next year as planned.

If you are still interested in having your child attend please contact me as soon as possible. If we do not get enough students by the end of this term we will have to cancel the trip. PLEASE NOTE : Due to unforeseen circumstances the meeting scheduled for Week 9 has been cancelled. Mrs Przyrembel – Chinese Teacher K-6

Clusters, superclusters, walls of galaxies and voids full of nothing, all pushed and pulled around by mysterious dark matter and even-more- mysterious dark energy. As we travel outwards, we travel back in time towards the beginning of the universe, and ask, 'what happens now...?' It doesn’t matter if you missed the first parts in this series.
