C-POND Issue 6 – March 2016 2

Welcome to our sixth issue of the C-POND

Newsletter. In this particular issue, it is

our pleasure to introduce our new incoming

Director & Deputy Director together with

the latest updates on key activities that

have happened since our last issue.

The Fiji Sodium Intervention Assessment

(FSIA) project is now in the final phase of

implementation. An update on all related

activities has been highlighted here. A

component of the Pacific MANA project

that commenced in September 2013 has

been completed. C-POND will remain en-

gaged as a key member of the Secretariat

for Pacific MANA. The Centre for Re-

search Excellence (CRE) project continues

to progress on target with updates high-

lighted in this issue. An exciting develop-

ment highlighted here is the FAO-funded

work to develop a regional toolkit for nu-

trition education in agriculture work led by

Dr Jillian Wate and Mrs Jimaima Schultz.

Last year, in addition to the ongoing pro-

jects within C-POND, the Centre facilitat-

ed the NCD STEPS Data collection training

in three (3) Pacific Island Countries in col-

laboration with WHO. A Health Impact

Assessment on draft regulations on mar-

keting of food and non-alcoholic beverages

in Fiji was also undertaken by C-POND and

has been highlighted in this edition.

Finally, in this issue we recognize a recent

PhD graduate (Dr Ramneek Goundar) under

the collaborative agreement between Dea-

kin University and C-POND/FNU. We also

feature here an update from our current

PhD candidate, Ms Gade Waqa.

C-POND continues to provide ongoing sup-

port to staff and students in NCD-related

research. Our Facebook page is active and

our Twitter page has gradually gained more

followers since the last edition.
