[Not pictured: Rich Robletto, Member-at-large]. COMMODORE’S COMMENTS Ahoy Everyone. First off I guess I should introduce myself. I am David SanGiovanni, your new Commodore. I appreciate the confidence in me you have shown by electing me as your Commodore. I hope everyone enjoyed the Flag Officers’ Dinner. There was a good crowd and a good time seemed to be had by all. As usual, we had the changing of the guard. This year we installed a new Vice Commodore, Larry Fox; our new Rear Commodore, Jared Pepper; and two new Members- at-large, Rich Robletto and Jan Carroll. Many thanks to them and all of the members staying on the Board another year. Also thanks to C&C Market for catering the dinner. The Veterans Day Race turned out to be more of a drift- and-motor than a sailboat race, but it was a nice day and all of the people that showed up appeared to have a good time, even if it was only sitting at the dock having cocktails. You will notice a new entry on the calendar for the year to come: monthly Social Hour. Please come join us for a [no- host] drink or two, and good story trading before Arts Alive the first Saturday of each month starting December 3rd at 5pm. On that note, thanks to everyone that showed up for the Planning Meeting; this is a volunteer organization and we can only do so much on our own as a board. Last but certainly not least a huge thank you needs to go out to Richard Hendry for stepping up to revive the Whistler newsletter. Please participate in this by submitting any pertinent stories or points of interest. You can submit articles or photos by e-mail to Richard at [email protected] Hope to see you all out on the water! - - David SanGiovanni, Commodore. N E W S L E T T E R

Never A Rope Again! - by Lee Shore

Once you cut a piece of rope off the spool at the chandlery and bring it aboard your boat and give it a job to do, it is never called a “rope” again. It becomes a “line” that you have put to work. Whatever job it is performing - - whether it becomes a jibsheet, a fender whip or a dock line - - there is an ideal knot, hitch or bend for its given task.

Generally, types of knots fall into three general categories. The first are those tied on the end of a line and are commonly called “knots,” such as the bowline knot and the stopper knot. The second category are those used to join two lines together. They may have “bend” in their name, as in a sheet bend, because to bend, in sailor talk, means to join. The last group are those which secure a line to a cleat, piling or stanchion, and they are known as “hitches. The ends of a line are referred to as either “working” or “standing.” The working end is free, while the standing end is secured to something. A loop formed in a line is known as a “bight.”

R A C E T O T H E W H I S T L E R B U O Y During November the club had the last two races off-shore races to the Whistler. Total distance of the course is approx.12.5 nautical miles. Four or five boats turned out for each of the last two races. Here are some pictures:
