    World Premiere – Symphonic VersionGoldenPalminCannesin1964,Les Parapluies de Cherbourg isanewgenreintheFrenchfilmworld:themusical.Acinematographicrevolution,carriedbythetimelessmusicofMichelLegrand.

    Genevièveliveswithherwidowedmother,whoownsanumbrellashopinCherbourg.SheandGuy,anautomechanic,aresecretlyinloveandwanttomarry.Shortlyafterthis,GuyisdraftedtoservetheAlgerianWar.Beforeleaving,GuyandGenevièveconsummatetheirloveforeachother,whichresultsinherbecomingpregnant.WhileGuyisawayatwartheydriftapart.Geneviève,stronglyencouragedbyhermother,acceptsamarriageproposalfromRolandCassard,ajewler,whohasfalleninloveandhaspromisedtobringupherchildashisown.Guyiswoundedandisdischargedbeforehistwo-yeartermisup,butwhenhereturnstoCherbourgGenevièvehasalreadymarriedandmovedaway.Hestruggleswithdepressionandanger,buteventuallyishealedbyfallinginlovewithandmarryingMadeleine,ayoungwomanwhohadbeencaringforhisdyingaunt.Usinganinheritancefromhisaunt,Guyfulfillshisambitionofopeningaservicestation.

    Yearslater,thenowconspicuouslywealthyGeneviève,travellingwithherdaughter,Guy'schild,accidentallyrunsintoGuyathisservicestation.Whilethetwohaveonlyabriefconversationaboutthestateoftheirrespectivelives,theconversationisclearlyfraughtwithunspokenfondnessandregret.

    Undoubtedlythemostfamousoperabuffainthehistoryofmusicandaneternalsourceofdelight.Rossinicomposeditinjustafewweeks,borrowingtheovertureandcertainairsfromhisownseriousandcomicworks.Alloftheremarkableensembles,however,areoriginal.Il barbiere di SivigliawasalsooneofthefirstoperatictriumphsinEurope.Thepremiere,performedon20February1816inRome,wasaresoundingflop,attendedbyallofRossini’senemies.Buttheoperawasquicklyrevivedon22FebruarywhenThe Barberreceivedrapturousapplause.Andindeed,howcouldRossininothaveencounteredthisinitialresistance?Hepittedtheoldworld(throughBartoloandhisauthoritarianism)againstthenewworld;oldoperaagainstmodernopera.Withitsincredibleverveandyouthfulcheer,thiswastheworkthatbuiltRossini’sbrilliantinternationalreputation.Withthisnewproductionoftheever-popularmasterpiece,ItalianstagedirectorDamianoMichielettomakeshisParisOperadebut.

    ToscaisthefifthPuccini’soperaanditmarksastylisticturningpoint.Bohemia,hispreviousopera,canbeconsideredasthefirstofhismasterpieces:it’salsothelastonewitha"verismo"theme,inotherwordsbasedonpeople’sdailyreality.

    Toscareturnstothepuretragedy,withhistoricalfigures(greatnamesofhistory).Itdoesn’tmeanastepbackwards,becausethetheatricalandmusicaltreatmentdiffersfromVerdi’swayofcomposing.It’sadensework,focusedonafewcharacterswithverydetailedpsychology.Thereislittleroomforgenrescenesorcrowd.

    PucciniwasverystronglyinfluencedbyactressSarahBernhardt’sinterpretationintheplayToscabyVictorienSardou.TheactresshauntsthecompositionandcreatesherFloriaTosca’smelodictones.

    AstheresultofthecollaborationbetweenVerdiandtheNeapolitanlibrettistSalvatoreCammarano,LuisaMillerisbasedonaplaywrittenbyFriedrichSchillerentitledKabale und Liebe.Theworkwascomposedin1849fortheTeatroSanCarloinNaples.ItmarksaturningpointinVerdi’sproductionandlife.Togetherwithhisfuturesecondwife,GiuseppinaStrepponi,thecomposerhasmovedbacktoBusseto,hisnativevillage.ItstabilizesVerdi,geographicallyandemotionallywithapositiveimpactonhispartitions.Forthefirsttime,Verdidistancedhimselffrompatrioticheroism,atypicalcharacteristicofhisyouthoperas.Asaconsequence,theactionisnolongerpartofgreathistoricalevents,butasimpleTyroleanvillage.

    Eachcharacterisnothingmorethanhisownrepresentative:thepassionsaretherebymoreindividualizedanddeepened.Itisatragedyofintimacy,wherecharacters’psychologyismoresubtlethanbefore.Obviously,greatmasterpiecesoftheyears1851-1853areemerging,especiallyLa TraviatawithwhichLuisaMillerhasmorethanonecommonpoint.
