Many of you will be aware that methods of assessment of training have been developed. To this end the next council meeting date and venue have been altered so that trainers (present and prospective) can be trained in these new methods. The training will be carried out by Ian Francis, Consultant Radiologist at East Grinstead who has been integral in this process in both medical and dental and maxillofacial radiology. As there is a European meeting in June there will be no Spring meeting however the Autumn meeting will once again be in Edinburgh on 23/24 September in Edinburgh Zoo of all places. Edinburgh Zoo is famous (at least in Scotland) for it’s penguins. Edinburgh Zoo has one very special King penguin named Sir Nils Olav, who has been awarded an honorary colonel-in- chief of the Kings Guard in the Norwegian army, and was knighted in 2008. He is very proud of this and when the guardsman visit him he especially enjoys inspecting the guards and listening to the bandsmen (see photo left). Autumn Scientific Meeting Edinburgh 2009 “Viewing Radiology from every angle” The meeting took place in the Lister building, part of the Royal College of surgeons in Edinburgh. It opened with lunch with the most fantastic views over Edinburgh! Dr Connor gave her presidential address “From Alpha to Omega”, experiences of teaching dental radiology. I think we could all identify with the teaching experiences she described. In particular, for us older ones, the rather basic tools which were available in the old days such as hand written overheads. Dr David Walker, Head of Assessment, described electronic assessment in Higher Education. He explained what is being developed in e-learning and the advantages and disadvantages. Dundee is apparently the first school to have a policy for online assessment. Donald Thomson then gave a very good presentation on the Dundee Experience of online assessment. The 2 BSDMFR/Henry Schein award presentations followed. Iona MacNicol and Joanna Morrison presented A Study of the importance of the individual variables assessed during videofluoroscopic examination of patients repaired cleft palate in determining whether secondary surgical correction was recommended to improve speech. Greg Logan followed with his presentation Comparison of superimposition of Di3D and laser scanned images of the BSDMfR Newsletter Number 28 Winter 2009/10

Society News Since the last newsletter we have had a couple of meetings which members may have attended, a very successful Autumn Scientific meeting and the Radiation Protection meeting in Manchester in December. Autumn Scientific Meeting Edinburgh 2009 “Viewing Radiology from every angle” The meeting took place in the Lister building, part of the Royal College of surgeons in Edinburgh. facial soft tissues onto CBCT images of the craniofacial complex. We ended this part of the day with members case reports from Rose Ngu and the rather grotesque case of the garrotted mummy from Dr A Carr. At 5.15 Eric Whaites delivered the John Hutton Memorial Lecture, “Teaching of Radiology-Past, Present and Future”. We were all able to enjoy as always a well paced presentation, and we got to use the voting pads! That evening we were greeted back at the college by a piper, champagne reception and a lovely dinner. The following morning the opening speaker was Professor Jim Newton. His presentation was “Do you speak the Doric?” Those of you who were there will now realise this is a dialect in Aberdeen. The relevance of this is that one of the new dental schools is placed in Aberdeen. There were lots of issues discussed regarding outreach, online assessment of supervisors etc. Of interest to our membership was the radiographic support being organised for Aberdeen. Mr Douglas Kennedy then gave a fascinating insight into army medic life in Afghanistan. He had been posted to Role 3 Multinational Hospital Kandahar. The rules of this sort of medicine are: save life and limbs, external fixation, primary debridement and simple is best. Several rather gory cases were presented particularly the last, but there were no fainters as far as I know. Finally another collection of case reports form Drs Andrew, Ng, Batchu and Harwood. We look forward to the next meeting in Edinburgh. Fiona Carmichael

IPEM Developments in Dental Radiology December 2009 The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine held a conference in Manchester on 16

th December 2009 about Developments in Dental Radiology.

The conference covered a wide range of dental and maxillofacial imaging modalities (plain film radiography, MRI, cone beam CT). Andrew Gulson from Health Protection Agency described the application of IRR99 in the use of CBCT in general dental practice. This was followed by informative presentations on IR(ME)R and the use of dental CBCT by Philip Holloway and radiation protection considerations for dental CBCT by Anne Walker from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. John Holroyd from the HPA then discussed the practical procedures for testing the performance of dental CBCT. Following a short coffee break, Ben Johnson from Guy’s and St Thomas Foundation Trust compared the doses of small volume CBCT to other dental imaging modalities. It was interesting to know how the dose of small volume CBCT was significantly lower than Scanora. Dr Vivian Rushton, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist from Manchester presented her research which indicated that training to improve the quality of panoramic radiographs in general dental practice was effective only in short term. Professor Thomas Redpath from Aberdeen shared his experience of using MRI for implant assessment. After lunch, Professor Keith Horner from Manchester Dental Institute discussed the various clinical applications of dental CBCT, selection criteria and the SEDENTEX CT project. Steven Mutch from Oxford described his experience of the introduction of digital system in community dental set up. This was followed by the controversial topic of hand held x-ray devices. Alan

Calverd spoke about the usefulness and safety of the device. Rosemary Eaton from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust then presented her study suggesting that the operator dose can increase significantly depending on the angulation of the tube and the position of the protective shield. The final presentation was on the diagnostic reference doses for cephalometric radiographs by John Holroyd. Bhagy Batchu and Donald Thomson
