APRIL/MAY 2005CHAIRMANS CHIRPWell done to all who successfully completed this years D.J. Sincere sympathies to those who didn’t, no doubt most will have another go next year. As I write I have been unable to obtain a list of “who came where”. However, Congratulations to anyone who won a Trophy, especially to whichever of our members was the highest placed CMCN competitor. Once again having been roped in as a Marshal it was great to see all the bikes on their way once more. Having completed six D.J’s I am content to head on home after the last bike goes past, to enjoy a good breakfast and perhaps a bit of a snooze – remember the Marshals have to be in place in time to record the passing of the first bike, which leaves Sanlam Centre at 06h01. So I had to rise from slumber just after 04h00. Anyway in spite of brekky and snooze there is always a slight twinge of sorrow for not being mounted on my trusty old “32 Norton and heading for the finishing line in Gauteng. As you can see from the Calendar of Events as recorded in our Shoptorque of February/March, our Regularity trial takes place on 26th/27th/28th May. Haverley has the entry forms. Please read all about it in your last Shoptorque. Without doubt Ken Sink and his organizing team will love to see some new faces on the event. If you really enjoy motorcycling you will most certainly enjoy this event. Speak to Ron or Ken or any Committee member if you are interested and want to know more about it.Remember, remember, remember – our Bike Show at the RDLI Hall in Greyville Racecourse takes place on 22nd – 24th July 2005. At each Main Meeting I will announce the date of the forthcoming Show meeting. Please make an effort to attend so as to listen and to contribute ideas. Physical assistance for, and at the Show, will be much needed. Barbara Sink and Gavin Foster are busy doing their best to attract the Bike Trade. Gerald Alexander, who is also well known to the Bike dealers, has volunteered to act as “back-up” if and when required. Incidentally it was Gerald and his brother Jeff who started Jeff’s Motorcycles in Umbilo Road. Jeff was deeply involved in motorcycle racing, sidecars mostly, in days gone by.

Jim CramerChairman.

*********SUBS ARE NOW OVERDUE. If you have not paid or have not discussed the problem as to why not with Jim, Alan or Ron – then this will be your last Shoptorque.PLEASE TRY NOT TO LET THAT HAPPEN.

Vice Chairman’s MegaphoneWhat an encouraging response to the chairman’s appeal for volunteers to sort out the spares container on Saturday the 26th February!14 members turned up including 2 ladies.Trees were trimmed, leaves were cleared off the roof & gutters and the container was cleared out and sorted; all parts to be kept were separated into a plastic crate and scrap was loaded onto a bakkie. In between scrubbing down walls and cleaning windows Liz Mathews and Veronica Hinks prepared tea, coffee, cold drinks and muffins for a relaxing break. The scrap was taken to the scrap dealers and fetched R150.00 for club funds, the container was neatly restocked and all was completed by noon. Many thanks to all those members for a job well done.

Breakfast RunsTwo runs to report on in this issue.Sunday 20th February organised by Bob West. A cool and overcast day with rain threatening, which probably accounts for the poor turnout of 6 bikes plus sweep at the clubhouse. But worse was to follow. When we got to Kloof Engen Garage not a single member was waiting. So we proceeded through the Valley of a 1000 Hills but not before one member dropped his bike in Hillcrest and broke the clutch lever. He will remain nameless suffice to say his bike was loaded onto the trailer and we carried on.Down in the valley at the bottom of “Wind Ridge” we arrived at a motorcycle shop, which I never knew existed, selling a variety of off road and MX bikes and all the kit and spares. We were able to buy a replacement clutch lever and the bike was back on the road. From there we went to the Castle in Shongweni on back roads I never knew existed (again) and had an enjoyable breakfast. Never once did it rain. Thanks Jim for driving the sweep and Bob for organising, what for him must have been a disappointing turnout.

Sunday the 13th MarchA much better turnout with 8 bikes leaving the clubhouse at 07h30 and meeting with another 7 at the Hyper Durban North. From there Dave Stone led us off along the coast road toward Ballito. At Westbrook we stopped for a test of accuracy. Accuracy at using a catapult that is. Dave produced 2 catties, some ironies and every one had a couple of shots at a tin can. Not one hit out of some 50 shots and then Dave casually hits it first shot just to show it’s a piece of cake! Makes one wonder how he spent his youth. From there we proceeded to the Wimpy in Ballito where 24 members sat down to breakfast. Thanks to Ray Nell for sweeping; he had a busy day with 2 breakdowns to load and tow. Thanks also to Dave Stone for organising the run. Makes one wonder what he has planned for the next one.

the previous owner. If the vehicle is being introduced onto the system i.e. never been registered before, an affidavit stating why the vehicle was never registered before. SOA form (built-up from scrap affidavit) obtainable from Queensmead offices, stamped

and signed by SAPS (I was fortunate enough to get the inspecting officer at Rossburgh to sign and stamp this). To this attach receipts for parts and work paid for in the rebuild. Take all this plus the vehicle to Rossburgh testing grounds.

RLV form (from Queensmead offices) complete section b & c. Acceptable identification. Weighbridge certificate (not necessary for motor cycles less than 1000cc) Obtainable at

any weighbridge. Declaration for increase or decrease in weight – if necessary. SAPS clearance RPC/RPI if vehicle has to be introduced to system – obtained at

For police clearance try to start as early as possible as the SAPS only issue a limited number of numbers to the inspection queue per day +/- 30. Start at Queensmead who open daily at 8h00 except at 9h00 on Wednesday when they do staff training. You may choose to do the first Queensmead visit on day 1 so that you can get into the front of the queue at Rossburgh which opens at 8h00.Good luck!

*********THE FINDING AND RESTORING OF MY 1928 OVERHEAD VALVE 350CC ROYAL ENFIELD. (the late EDDY WHITEHORN.)

I am sure that most old motor vehicle enthusiasts hallucinate about finding their dream car or motorcycle tucked away in the proverbial haystack. "The impossible dream", you might say - "Not so, because it has happened to me. I have always been interested in all forms of motoring but what attract me most are Veteran, Vintage and Classic motorcycles.I was attending a braai in Johannesburg some ten years ago, when one of the other guests said to me "I understand you are keen on old bikes", "Sure thing", I replied, cocking one eyebrow enquiringly. "Well, said my new friend, I have seen one parked in a parking garage, somewhere over the hill in Braamfontein, The upshot was that we quietly slipped away to investigate further. We eventually found her, in all her faded and unkempt glory in the parking garage of the Liberty Life Building, chained to a sewerage pipe. She was in a sorry state but absolutely complete, including an acetylene lighting system, original exhaust pipe, hand controls and the like. I managed to contact the owner through the security service and after drawn out negotiations, trailered her to my home in Durban. As regards her pedigree, she is a 1928, 350cc, Overhead Valve, Royal Enfield, Model 355 Sport.

In one of her saddlebags were the original sales invoice and receipt, the log book 1928 - 1952 showing registration number RX 2867, being Henley on Thames, just outside London. There were also details of the one and only owner, a certain Mr. William Arthur Hearne. The gentleman I bought the bike from obtained it at a Sotheby's Auction Sale in London with the idea of restoring the machine and riding her in the Durban - Johannesburg Tour. Unfortunately, or fortunately for me, he only got her as far as the parking garage in

Page 8: newsletter 2005 04 and 05 Shopto…  · Web view100 club organiser salome van niekerk. p o box 41587. rossburgh (h) 4655831 (w) 3612054 racing committee. chairman geoff isacks. 4

Braamfontein. On arriving home, the first thing I did was to check the magneto. The high tension wire was held some ten millimeters from the cylinder head and the engine turned over with a good prod of the kick starter lever and behold a good long blue spark. The second thing was to start her. Petrol was fed into the carburetor, oil checked and believe it or not, having not been run for many years she started "first kick".I replaced tyres, chains, all the cables, checked her from front to back and could find nothing amiss mechanically. I road her successfully in the Durban - Johannesburg (D.J.) Tour and other than a carburetor needle coming loose, she never missed a beat. The decision was then made to restore her completely. She was stripped down to the last nut and bolt, fully inspected, parts remade or replaced as necessary. The mudguards were in poor condition and required extensive patching and welding. The wheels were taken apart and new spokes installed. The piston was relatively unworn and the barrel, therefore, sleeved and bored out to suit the piston. All parts were cleaned, primed and painted with 2K black. The tank presented a problem. It was painted a very non acceptable yellow. I gently sanded it with 2000 grit paper until the original colour and details came through. The tank was then chromed, etched where it was to be painted and masked with signwrighters tape and the lines brushed on with auto enamel. The tank badge came from the Vintage Motorcycle Club Ltd in the United Kingdom. The bike has completed numerous tours, won concourse honours and continues to give me great pleasure. Every time I ride her I am reminded of the high quality of manufacture and ingenuity of design used by our forefathers seventy odd years ago.If you are looking for a hobby. have a basic workshop and a few Rands to spare, I would recommend re-building a motorcycle. It is much easier to handle than a car. It gives one just as much pleasure

AJS CAN TAKE IT – MALLY DOYLEA number of years ago, possibly 1978/9, an acquaintance of mine became a friend because of a

Page 9: newsletter 2005 04 and 05 Shopto…  · Web view100 club organiser salome van niekerk. p o box 41587. rossburgh (h) 4655831 (w) 3612054 racing committee. chairman geoff isacks. 4

common interest we shared, that being old British motor cycles. Our Classic Motorcycle Club had not yet been formed. This friend, whose name is Ivor, and myself used to go on a Breakfast run almost every Sunday morning, and got to know each other fairly well. We decided to ride our two cackling AJS’to Cape Town and back, his bike being a 500cc AJS single 1957, and mine a 1951 with H. cams. These two machines running together made the most beautiful music my ears had heard in many a year. After much deliberation we decided to leave on a certain date about two months hence, to enable us to effect the necessary repairs and adjustments required on our machines. About a month before departure date, Ivor informed me he was unable to accompany me on the trip, as he had to work. However that didn’t deter me, it only made me change my intended route which was to have been through the Transkei, to one around and through the Free State. I overhauled my machine and fitted a luggage rack over the rear mudguard, in addition to two saddlebags, to enable me to carry the extra equipment such as tyre levers, tubes, puncture outfit and spares. On the morning of departure I left at first light, really laden with all my gear, even my Great Coat.I was unable to exceed 45mph as the piston was a bit tight, in spite of the hundred miles I had covered before the trip. I made two stops before breakfast at Mooi River, to allow the engine to cool down, because of the low speed I was forced to travel. I was considering turning back after breakfast but when I emerged from the Restaurant two men in their fifties were admiring my bike. After exchanged pleasantries they informed me they had ridden bikes in their youth and asked if I was traveling far. Having spoken to them renewed my enthusiasm and I replied “Cape Town.” as I had a quick change of mind. I continued to ride at 45 mph for the entire day. Had I exceeded this speed I felt that the engine would lock up. At about 16H00 I arrived at Winburg in the Free State very tired, as I had been astride the bike for almost 12 hours and at a snails pace. I checked into a hotel and had a ground floor room which I shared with my bike, a newspaper under the chain case, preventing oil leaking onto the carpet. I paid my bill that evening as I intended leaving early before breakfast was served. However the manager very kindly brought me a cup of coffee and a slice of toast before I left. After departing the built up area I tried once more to open the throttle a little more with the same result, the engine wanting to seize up. I turned off and crossed over a Freeway a short way after Bloemfontein at a little dorp called Trompsburg, where I had a most enjoyable breakfast. As I was almost finished eating I saw a man climb out of his Valiant motor car and could almost read his lips. Well, to cut a long story short he wished to purchase my bike and told me he used to ride a Triumph when he was a young man, a very interesting chap he was. Before getting back onto the freeway again I stopped at a Service Station, filled the tank, and added a tin of Wynns (small) to my oil tank. After I considered the Wynns had circulated through the system I opened the throttle a little and found I was able to ride at 65 mph without any sign of seizure at all. My next stop was Cradock for a light lunch, then on again to Cookhouse, where I arrived at almost 17h00. Cookhouse being about 100 miles from P.E., which is where I wanted to be that evening as I have a sister there in Summerstrand, also the fact that I had no lights on the bike and didn’t wish to sleep in a hotel again that night.I only managed to fill the petrol tank as the Service stations all closed at 17h00 in that area. After downing a Coke and a chocolate I had to administer a little TLC to the Ajay as the performance had dropped off considerably while climbing the pass into Cookhouse. After resetting the point gap to .012 the machine was once more responsive. Now I still had approximately 100 miles to go and the time was 17h20, but luckily in February/March it is still quite light after 19h00 in the Cape. Once out of town I opened the throttle a little more, 70 mph

Page 10: newsletter 2005 04 and 05 Shopto…  · Web view100 club organiser salome van niekerk. p o box 41587. rossburgh (h) 4655831 (w) 3612054 racing committee. chairman geoff isacks. 4

for the rest of the way to P.E. and arrived at Summerstrand in daylight hours. My trusted old Ajay hadn’t missed a beat with the exception of the point gap closing slightly. The next day I checked the fuel consumption and found the old bike had traveled almost 90 mph. Perhaps the reader may be bored now so I will terminate and possibly end this story at a later date.BEWARE THE BIG “Rs” OF DURBS – DAVE STONEI would be very dismayed if I’m the only one with more than a couple of Roaches big enough to “saddle up” lurking around in their garage/workshop. I’m confident I’m not alone. They really are part of our bit of the planet, and just won’t go away!A word of warning therefore, when it comes to their relationship with our Classic “Boneys”, those with cork insert clutch plates. My little BSA 250 clutch plates had been in a container on the shelf awaiting assembly, and blow me down, when I came to do this, I discovered the blighters had been dining on the cork inserts, even though they are a bit oily. This is war now!

The Application for the Restricted Competition Licence is available on the SAVVA Website as a download that should be completed and posted to me. For full information please go to www.savva.org.za and then click on Motorsport. You need to print both forms. And the cost is R32.50. Members are requested not to leave applying for their RCL until a week before an event as there is no guarantee it will be returned to

you in time. Please allow at least three weeks from time of posting. Only those members, drivers and navigators who participate in events where a MSA/SAVVA Organising Permit has been issued need hold an RCL that is renewable annually, everybody else needs the SAVVA Indemnity available from their clubs at a cost of R2 and is valid for life. The RCL includes the Indemnity and no yellow card is required.

I had the pleasure of attending another of the SCOCC’s Car Shows in George the other weekend and the support received from around the country is nothing short of amazing. This event continues to grow annually since the inception some five years ago. There was so much to see and so many people to talk to that I unfortunately could not spend time with some of you for which I apologize. The thing that never fails to catch my attention at this show is the number of exotic and historic Mercedes cars owned by members of the Knysna and George clubs besides the Jaguars of which there are many. In all over 1000 vehicles were on display. The 1902 Benz from the Crankhandle Club caught the attention of the large crowd that regularly attends this event. Many of the veterans were actually driven from Cape Town for the event including the Buicks of Kobus van Jaarsveld from Johannesburg and Ty Terblanche from Pietermaritzburg and from all accounts trouble free. Hopefully some intrepid soul will write an account of the trip? May this show continue to prosper in the years ahead.I am told that the DJ for pre 1936 motorcycles has a full entry of some 120 riders and takes place between Durban and Johannesburg over the weekend March 4/5. The Continental Milligan to be run in June out of Port Elizabeth in the direction of the Wilderness is again fully subscribed with a waiting list of some 15 hopefuls. CHAIRMAN’S NEWSLETTER – April 2005

I had the pleasure of participating in the 2005 OD Inggs Memorial Trial as a marshal, organized this year by the EPVCC. This event is gaining in popularity every year with 33 starters from the Queenstown, East London, Port Alfred and Port Elizabeth clubs. That intrepid fellow Harvey Metcalf traveled from Cape Town to participate with a friend from Grahamstown. The point that makes this event so unique is the co-

operation and support engendered between the Eastern Cape Clubs who take it in turn to organize the run and which members of all the clubs in the region support. OD Inggs was an early collector / restorer of note in Grahamstown from some time in the early 50’s probably as a result of his access to vehicles from the district. He was the second-generation family undertaker in Grahamstown. He was collecting vehicles well before the formation of SAVVA and by the early 1970’s had put together a large collection of pretty rare vehicles that was subsequently sold and then exported. Before his death he had put together another small collection and is fondly remembered by restorers from near and far as he was always willing to help an enthusiast restore a vehicle and often gave parts away to that end.The event was won by Sharon & Phil Hammonds from Queenstown in a 1957 Peugeot 203 (Penalty 36) second Carel Buchner/Graham Samuel of Grahamstown 1933 Ford (penalty 48 points) third Neville & Susan Koch also Grahamstown Alfa Romeo Spyder (52 points) fourth Roy & Yvette Nel from Port Elizabeth 1958 Triumph TR3 (55 penalty points). Details, SR’s and Entry Forms are still awaited for the SAVVA National to be run in the Western Cape during September. If you are interested in obtaining information and paperwork please email the Event Secretary, Di Dugmore on – [email protected] (Note the underline between the names) or phone 082 780 8693.I have not had a report on the DJ other than it was a success and the weather was good. No doubt there will be commentary in the motorcycle clubs newsletters. The paperwork and instructions for the Restricted Competition Licence is available on the SAVVA Website as a download that should be completed and posted to me. DID YOU KNOW - DAVE STONE.There is a right and wrong way to fit a Circlip!Looking closely at most flat type circlips you will see that one edge is sharper than the other. This happens during its manufacture as a result of the stamping operation. To give the circlip the greatest chance of not coming out of its groove the sharper edge should face outwards to maximize its grip.

*********The Workshop Engine Matters: New era for the BMW Boxer Engine (published with the kind permission of BMW)

Background

The air-cooled, horizontally opposed two-cylinder "Boxer" engine, derived from designs for aircraft engines are an inseparable part of BMW motorcycle history. The relatively unconventional engine layout (for a motorcycle) has become synonymous with BMW Motorrad. The combination of dependability, flexibility and versatility has long been the hallmark of the boxer engines and BMW have taken to the design to heights never dreamed possible when it was first conceived. It is an engine that makes itself equally at home on the racetrack, on the open road or in the bushveld. As an indicator of their durability around a quarter of all boxers sold since 1923 are still on the road!

The distinctive layout of the BMW Boxer TwinA new generation Boxer Twin

Page 14: newsletter 2005 04 and 05 Shopto…  · Web view100 club organiser salome van niekerk. p o box 41587. rossburgh (h) 4655831 (w) 3612054 racing committee. chairman geoff isacks. 4

More powerful, more refined and more economical in fuel consumption: with the R 1200 GS, BMW Motorrad presented to the world the latest generation of the flat twin "boxer" engine, so characteristic of the brand. Following the trend of its predecessor, the new engine is now making its appearance in a whole range of new-generation BMWs including the R 1200 RT and R 1200 ST.

Versatility of the boxer engineWith its air/oil cooling and 4-valve technology, the new flat twin engine is similar in construction to the previous BMW Motorrad 2-cylinder power units, yet it is in fact a completely redeveloped engine, with all performance-related components revised.

Longer stroke for greater poke

Stroke has been increased to 73 mm from 70.5 mm, increasing capacity to 1170 cc. This, along with a new and lighter crankshaft, increases the output of the flat twin engine by 17% to 74 kW (100 bhp) at 7000 rpm. The increase in torque is equally impressive: 115 Nm at 5500 rpm means an additional 17 Nm over the previous model.

Other components contributing to this impressive increase in power are the larger valves, optimised intake and outlet channels, a higher compression (11.0:1) and the significantly enlarged airbox, now with a volume of 9 litres.

A key development goal in the new flat twin engine was an increase in smoothness and refinement. Thus the new engine, for the first time in the history of BMW Motorrad flat twin engines, now has a balancing shaft. So as to save space, it runs inside the hollow auxiliary shaft for the camshaft drive and thus ensures optimum running smoothness

Page 15: newsletter 2005 04 and 05 Shopto…  · Web view100 club organiser salome van niekerk. p o box 41587. rossburgh (h) 4655831 (w) 3612054 racing committee. chairman geoff isacks. 4

and silky soft pulling power across the entire rev range, though without diluting the essential character of the twin-cylinder engine.

The new generation boxerThe new flat twin is bigger on capacity and output than its predecessor, yet it weighs less - in spite of the additional balancing shaft. Consistent lightweight construction has reduced its weight by a total of 3 kilograms, achieved by state-of-the-art development methods and innovative die-cast techniques. One example of many: the crankcase is now significantly more rigid and stable, yet the entire component is 1.4 kilos lighter. And the lightweight principle has been consistently applied inside the engine too: for example the new crankshaft saves a whole kilogram.

Finally, a revolutionary feature in the new flat twin engine is the knock control function. Here, sensors register every uncontrolled combustion - such as might occur due to poor fuel quality for example. The engine management system then retards the ignition timing to compensate. This highly compressed engine can thus make do with regular fuel if necessary. The latest development of the electronic engine management system and the modified dual ignition system reduce fuel consumption by some 8% - in spite of the improved engine performance. There are also two oxygen sensors which combine with the closed-loop three-way catalytic converter to ensure minimum pollutant emissions in line with the currently valid exhaust emission norm EU 2.

The new flat twin engine from BMW Motorrad is the best "boxer" ever. More powerful and more dynamic, it continues to arouse emotions a motorcyclist can't fail to resist - just as it has been doing for eighty years.
