IT NEWS

Our School Reports are Going Digital From the end of Semester 1, 2015 all student reports will be uploaded to the Parent and Student Portal of Xuno and will no longer be mailed out to home addresses. These reports will be in .PDF format which will allow them to be downloaded, saved and printed from anywhere you have Internet access.

This means students will be able to save and include a copy of their reports in job applications or add them as an attachment in their personal résumé. Past reports will also be available online for as long as a student attends the College.

It is expected that this method will make distribution more efficient as a change of mailing address will not affect collection and we will not need to reissue lost or damaged reports.

Students needing more than one report per family will also be able to print or email as many copies as needed. There will also be a considerable cost and time saving for the College over the year.

How to Access Student Reports via Xuno Finding your reports is easy. All reports are stored in the Assessments and Reports section of Xuno.

To access them from your home go to www.newcombsc.vic.edu.au and click on the button at the bottom of the screen then enter your secure Username and Password. Both Parent and Student log on codes will be able to access the reports pages. Once Xuno opens you can see the Assessment & Reports link on the left of the screen. Find the report you want and click (click to download). You can then view save and print the reports as you like.

What if I can’t get access at home? If you do not have Internet or can’t work out how to save or print the reports don’t worry. Students will be able to open and print them at school or you can contact the school to arrange a copy to be printed for you.

The important thing is that all families do make sure to obtain a copy of student reports and sit down to read these together with students.

Parent Computer Information Sessions With all of the new things we have been introducing this year there

may be some parents that are feeling left behind when it comes to

their student’s computer use at school.

· We have opened a portal for you to buy student computers through JB Education or students can bring their own computer

that you have bought somewhere else

· We have introduced Xuno and opened up student data and details to parents over a secure Internet Portal

· We have launched a new phone app to allow you to stay in touch on your mobile phone

· We are continuing to develop more class work that uses computers each day to assist learning

To help you keep up with all of this we would like to offer parents a chance to come to information sessions designed to give you a hands on experience to see what all of the changes mean to students and parents.

Beginning next term there will be a series of sessions that will be held in the College Library on a Wednesday afternoon. If you would like to learn more about any of the topics mentioned please keep a check on our calendars in the newsletter and we will also announce session details via the app and Xuno messaging.

Dance Workshop On Wednesday 17th June, a small group of students from Years 7 to 10 were invited to be involved in a dance workshop funded by the Victorian Arts Centre partly through Group 72 going to see the show Chalk About an international Dance/Drama collaboration based on peoples’ and students’ life stories.

Dance teacher Mel, who had travelled from the other side of Melbourne to teach the workshop, explained various elements from Chalk About which she used in the workshop, in particular the use of lying on the floor and “chalk” drawing your partner’s body outline. Students then had to choose three specific aspects of their life that they loved, ranging from dance, acting, sport, family, wrist bands, friends…..the list was varied. Students then acted out these in the workshop with Mel, Mr K. and our Chaplain Jess.

Shania, one of the leading Year 10 dancers observed “It was interesting and different and Mel made everyone feel confident and not afraid to be themselves in front of everyone.” Taneal of Year 7 said “It was fun acting out”, as Jan-Louis (also Year 7) added “It got a bit tricky – introducing each other using acting and movement without talking - it was fun though”.

Further indication of the strong engagement was the Year 10 Dance students kept Mel (our dancer for the day) well into lunch to talk about Mel’s experiences in Dance and Theatre. Mel has been selected for London’s Royal Academy of Arts, that actors like Dame Judy Dench attended. They even asked her if she

could return to do another workshop they were so enthusiastic. I would like to thank our 20+ students for their polite, enthusiastic and co-operative manner and for participating in the many varied movement activities which would have been a challenge if not for the leadership of the Year 10 girls, Year 9 boys, Mel and Jess. Big thanks to Jess for her help, participation and commitment. Also thanks to the Music Department, for use of their equipment and the other teachers who permitted their students to attend.

BullyZero Presentation On Thursday, 18th June all Year 7 and 8 students participated in a workshop presentation delivered by the BullyZero Foundation.

The mission of the BullyZero Australia Foundation is to provide genuine and enduring care for bullying victims and their families. They exist to identify and empower bullying victims, to support and stand side by side with them, their families and friends in taking action and creating permanent positive change. BullyZero is dedicated and committed to raising awareness of bullying and its devastating consequences through schools, workplaces and the broader community. We aim to empower and provide young people with hands on educational strategies to prevent bullying and work with bullies and their families to help create positive behavioral changes.

Students listened to Oscar Yildiz present some information and they watched a number of confrontational clips that made them think about the impact that cyber bullying can have on one another. We were very lucky to have the Ambassador, Natalia Wissa, who was a contestant on The Bachelor series this year. Natalie spoke to the students about her experience with bullying at school and also her horrible experience with cyber bullying post The Bachelor TV Series. Natalie was able to explain to students the ways in which she learned to tackle this anonymous type of bullying and how she was then able to switch off to this world.

We thank the BullyZero Foundation who delivered the presentation in gratitude for the donation made by students at Newcomb Secondary College after their contribution to the National Day of Action Against Bullying.

Biggest Morning Tea Fundraiser

On Thursday, 18th June the staff and students of Newcomb Secondary College were involved with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Supported by participants around the nation, the goal of this event was to raise much needed funds to support the Australian Cancer Council with its research into cancer treatment and prevention. The event was organized by the Year 12 Student Leaders, who were inspired to do this upon learning that '1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women' will be challenged with cancer at some point throughout their lives. Many of the students prepared their own culinary contributions for the event. However, the cakes, muffins and slices were largely the diligent work of Mr Amer’s Master Chefs. Thank you to all who were involved on the day – because of everybody’s enthusiasm and support, the Student Leaders will be making a donation of over $350 to this worthy cause.

ANOTHER YEAR OF

ART BEING EXPLORED

We all need to be mentored throughout our life. What a privilege it is when you are chosen to be mentored by an artist who has a passion to pass on her skills in such a way the students are enabled to learn all about the different mediums used to produce various art works.

The Rotary Club of Drysdale are very happy to support the Bruno Callori Young Artist Mentorship Program. Instigated by a former member with the assistance of Bruno Callori who identified a need to encourage young students to explore art. So a program was established where students from local High Schools in Year 11 were encouraged to submit a piece of work to the Rotary Clubs Easter Art Show to be judged. A student from each of four local high schools is then selected to be mentored in preparing work for their Year 12 port folio. Now in its fifth year and four schools participating it is proving to be very much appreciated by the schools and the students alike.

Since Bruno's untimely passing Jill Shalless now mentors the four students. Having just started with a new group for this year there is already an energy in the studio that proves this year will be very successful.

Want to know more about this program or other programs

Rotary participate in. Then come along to a meeting one Monday evening at the Clifton Springs Golf club. Call me on 0408 989 221 to book your complimentary visit.
