Welcome everybody to the first of our March edition of Monaghan Public Participation Network e-bulletin.

Another busy month is ahead of us with lots of community events happening county wide. There are also opportunities for funding and training programmes so if you are interested in any of them contact the relevant person or myself and I would be happy to lead you in the right direction.
Thank you to all of you who sent in your news to us, it is always good to hear from you all. Remember, the purpose of producing this e-bulletin on a fortnightly basis is to facilitate the flow of information to you all on issues relevant to the community and voluntary sector. Issues such as

Monaghan County Council wishes to advise the public that the 2016 Housing Grants Schemes are now open and applications are being accepted for the schemes outlined below:
Housing Adaptation Grant for People with DisabilitiesMobility Aids Grant for People with Mobility/Disability NeedsHousing Aid for Older People Grant (66 years or over)
If you wish to apply for any of these schemes, please ensure you submit your application as soon as possible in order to have it fully assessed and considered. Please also ensure applications are completed in full and that all requested information is submitted with the application. No applications will be processed until all information is received.
Application Forms and Guidelines are available from the Housing Grants section of our website.

Monaghan Sports Partnership / Peace Link Inclusive Multi-Sport ClubThe inclusive multi-sport club continues at the Peace Link in Clones every month and we thank Clones Photography Group for capturing some great pictures of the children last month.The inclusive club is for children with a disability from age 5 -16 years of age and their siblings and is run on a monthly basis. The next date is Saturday March 26th at the Peacelink, Clones from 1.30-3.30pm. The participants will get an opportunity to try different fun active games and activities will be conducted by qualified vetted coaches.This club is unique in that they cater for children with physical, intellectual, learning and sensory disabilities and also accommodate their siblings and parents which is a fantastic way to promote family interaction through the medium of sport and physical activity. Parents will also have free gym use during the club. I have attached poster with full details.Places are limited on this club and a completed application form is required. New Disability Awareness in Sport WorkshopMonaghan Sports Partnership presents a new Disability Awareness in Sport Workshop. This is an awareness building workshop aimed at anyone involved in sport or physical activity that would like to learn more

about offering opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in their school, club or organisation.The first course in Monaghan is taking place March 22nd, Castleblayney Enterprise Centre from 7pm-9pm. Limited places available. Cost is €15.To book a place please contact Dean Mc Elroy, Sports Inclusion Development Officer on 087-2623956. National Bike Week 2016Monaghan Sports Partnership on behalf of Monaghan County Council will be coordinating a series of events to take place for National Bike Week (11th – 19th June).We are currently looking for expressions of interest from community groups regarding a Bike Week event in your locality – this could be a fun event for children, an adult ‘learn to cycle’ event, bike fixing, bike to work etc. All events should be open to the general public and of a non-competitive nature and may involve local Schools where possible. The goal of Bike Week is to encourage more people to consider getting on a bike for the first time or taking out their old bike to cycle to work, school, to the shops or just for leisure. To request an expression of interest form, please contact the Sports Partnership Office at 042-9755126. Closing date for expressions of interest is Wednesday 23rd March 2016 at 5.00pm
Walk this Way – Monaghan Walking Leader Training Course The Irish Heart Foundation in conjunction with Monaghan Sports Partnership and HSE Health Promotion will run a Community Walking Leader Training Course, April 23rd-24th in Monaghan Town (venue TBC). The training is primarily aimed at those wishing to lead a local walking group or promote walking in their community or workplace. The course comprises of a weekend of training and a follow up 4 week leader task to try out your new walking leader skills. Irish Heart Foundation, HSE Health Promotion and Sport Ireland are subsidising the course and there is a nominal fee of €50 which will cover your training, materials and two lunches. The course will run on Saturday April 23rd, 9am-5pm and Sunday April 24th, 9am-2.00pm. During the weekend you will gain a greater understanding of the health benefits of walking, learn to develop and lead a local walking session for mixed fitness levels, receive advice on starting a new walking group or promoting an existing group and gain a greater understanding of posture, technique, stretching and safety issues for a successful walk. Set yourself on the path to success and keep your New Year’s resolutions on track. Monaghan County Council launches campaign to promote Monaghan as a place to live, work, visit and do business
During Enterprise Week in Monaghan last week, Eamonn O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council officially launched a new on-line brochure called ‘Things to Know About Monaghan’. The brochure can be viewed by clicking on the following link http://monaghanbusiness.com/onlinebrochure/index2.htmlMonaghan County Council is keen to get the message out that Monaghan is a great place to work, visit, invest and do business in and that the county has many key advantages in this regard. Advantages like:
o The border location - providing strategic access to the UK market and access to key airports and ferry ports
o The strong work ethico A wide selection of available properties for retail, industry and
commercial office useo A low cost business location
A key target market for this promotion is the Monaghan Diaspora and the aim is to encourage those with Monaghan links to come back and set up or expand their companies in the county. We need your help to get this message out so please support the initiative and forward the link to the brochure to friends and family overseas.
Monaghan County Council and the business community of Monaghan town have come together and established a Town Team to promote the business in the town. Under the banner “Monaghan Has It” a number of initiatives will be rolled out over the coming months. Please find enclosed ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) application. This training is aimed at professionals and individuals who are working in an area where they are likely to come into contact with someone who is at risk of suicide. If you are interested in attending, please complete and return the application form by the deadline noted. Places are limited to twenty four participants on each course; therefore preference has to be given to potential participants who are working within the Cavan and Monaghan areas. NEW LOCAL BUS ROUTES IN MONAGHAN TOWN
The Transport Co-Ordination Unit (TCU) which looks after rural transport in Co Monaghan has introduced a local bus service around Monaghan town. There is a small fare for using the service – but when you count in the pay parking charge, it’s well worth using. If you’re over 65 with a free bus travel pass, you and your companion may use this service for free. You can get more information on www.cmtcu.ie

Monaghan County Council is set to undertake a comprehensive review of all speed limits in County Monaghan.
As part of the national speed limit review and in accordance with the document ‘Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits in Ireland’ as published by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in 2015, Monaghan County Council are undertaking a review of all speed limits on roads (National,
regional and local) in the county as well as housing estates.
The new Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws are to be operational by April 2017.
Monaghan County Council INVITE SUBMISSIONS as part of this review in relation to housing estates and all other roads within the county, particularly where you have concerns regarding the posted speed limit and speed of vehicles. These will be taken into consideration in accordance with the above Guidelines.

Fleadh 64 Traditional Music Gathering will run in Clones this year from 13th to 15th May 2016. There will be workshops (accordion, singing, bodhran & drums), recital, concerts sessions, busking competition and various with themes of 1916 commemorations.

Sustainable waste seminar
SENIORS ALERT SCHEMEThere have been changes recently to how you apply for assistance under the Seniors Alert Scheme. This is the scheme which supplies things like personal alarms to vulnerable older people. The Scheme has moved to Pobal, and local groups who are interested in rolling out the scheme in their locality have to re-apply to be placed on the list of groups a person may contact if they wish to avail of the Scheme.
