Engaging our School Community

Everyday your child is engaged in exciting, creative and innovative learning that is authentic and relevant. Our Challenge: How do we provide you with the opportunity to become part of the learning partnership between student / teacher / home. Google Apps for Education: Provide a suite of Apps that enhance and promote collaborative online learning communities. Teachers have used the Apps to design a classroom website and classroom blog to provide you with a means to engage with your child’s learning programme. The Pathways team ( Specialist programmes) also have their individual websites and blogs. Classroom Website

Purpose:To provide information on current learning programmes across all curriculum areas. Each class site has their own calendar, resource pages, contact information. Classroom Blog

Purpose: To provide an insight into the day to day learning, and a celebration of real time learning evidenced through images and student voice. Access to your child’s class website and blog can be gained through Rotorua Intermediate School’s website and select the tab classes.

We invite you to explore, interact and engage with your child’s classroom site and blog.

A parent information evening on Google Apps for Education chromebooks, ,class websites and blogs will be held early Term 3. Date to be advised. Please do not hesitate to contact Heather Nahu if you have

any queries.

Each child’s parents and whanau are their first and most important teachers. Building

learning focussed relationships and connections between parents, whanau and teachers and

supporting all parents, students and teachers to act in ways that improve learning is

therefore vital for each child’s ongoing learning and success.

“Joint interventions involving parents and teachers have the greatest impact on

outcomes.” Robinson, Hohepa & Lloyd, 2009.

We have developed a range of opportunities for parents to share their child’s progress.

Term 2 & 4 Progress Report

Progress discussion with teacher, parents/whanau and student

(To book your meeting go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code and enter the code kgneg

then follow the three steps).

During “Progress Discussions” in June and December, of this year, students will be able to

evidence and demonstrate their ongoing development.

Parents are encouraged to engage in discussions with their child throughout the year,

focussing on what they ARE LEARNING and HAVE LEARNT when undertaking learning

opportunities at school.

Please contact your child’s teacher by email to communicate celebrations, successes or

concerns.

We look forward to acknowledging your child’s out of school engagement and successes

with their peers.

Celebration assemblies are held every fortnight with end of term celebration assemblies for

Specialist Technology awards. At the end of Term 4 we have Specialist Technology Prize

-giving, Sports Prize-giving, Year 8 Prize-giving and Year 7 Prize-giving.

Our whanau inquiry focus for Term 1 was IDENTITY!

We began our inquiry by looking at our own identity. We then inquired into our class, school, community and country’s identity.

We had the privilege of learning about and visiting the Marae that our house is named after -

Te Roro o te Rangi!

To learn more about the fantastic learning

that is happening in Te Roro 1 check out our

Mean as!

What’s Been Happening in. . .

Te Roro o te Rangi 3 Our inquiry over the past term has been around our identity. We have been looking at ourselves and our role in the world. As part of this, we looked into iconic places and people within Rotorua and have written information reports and have turned them into QR codes! These will be placed in locations around our city so visitors can scan the codes and listen to our information reports,

learning about the topics we have researched! Try it for yourself below. . .

(QR code scanner is required)

Scan this to listen to Jahzell and Anahera tell you all about the Mount Tarawera eruption that effected so many local peoples’ lives and change the landscape

for ever!

Scan this to listen to Braydon tell you all about Russell Westbrook, an inspiration for many young basketball-

ers’ who visit the sportsdrome here in Rotorua.

Scan this to listen to Danisha and Mahina tell you all about The Redwoods Forest, one of Rotorua’s most

popular recreation facilities.

Identity Art– Check out our collage self portraits that we did as part of our identity unit! If you scan these using the Aurasma App (free on mobile devices) you will

watch a video of us introducing ourselves!

Ellie Langton Pou Stephens

Term two is off to a flying start! Quite literally for the girls who had an opportunity to experiment with flight using

model gliders. It was a smashing time!

We have had a science focus which has been great with lots of interesting

questions being asked as we investigated solar energy.

We have also been busy in class and have had the opportunity to meet and learn

with Bernie and Harrold in the Life Education mobile class.

STOP

Rheumatic Fever

There is a nurse service to prevent rheumatic fever in our school.

Rheumatic Fever damages children’s hearts.

There is a free nurse available for children who have sore throats or

skin infections like school sores, nits and scabies.

The nurse will be available from

2—3pm on Mondays

and

9—10.15 am on Wednesdays

at Rotorua Intermediate School.

Children and young people aged between 4 and 19 with sore throats or skin

infections can also use the free clinic at Western Heights Health Centre in the

afternoon between 3 and 6 pm Monday to Thursday or 3 and 5 pm Friday.

Please call 3470565, txt 0224847628 ( 022 4throat) if you have questions or

need help. This clinic also operates during school holidays.

It is free to see the nurse and medicine will be provided. Children seen by the

nurse stay registered with their usual GP.

Please get sore throats treated and protect children’s hearts.

YOU COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH INFLUENZA AT ANYTIME

Influenza can be anywhere. Contact with the influenza virus is almost

unavoidable, and while contact does not necessarily mean infection, it does

mean that you are never far from the possibility of catching influenza.

Influenza, commonly called the flu, can be a serious illness that is sometimes

fatal. Infection with the influenza virus may lead to a stay in hospital for any

age group but particularly if you are elderly or have an ongoing medical

condition. Influenza can make an existing medical condition, such as asthma or

diabetes, a lot worse.

Even if you do not end up in hospital, influenza can keep you in bed for a week

or more, preventing you from doing work, sport or just about anything that

requires leaving the house.

By immunising against influenza you can protect yourself and lessen the chance

of bringing it home to a baby, older relative, or someone with a medical

condition who could develop serious complications from influenza.

Get immunised early before the influenza season starts.

Ranolf Medical Centre is urging everyone to come in if you haven't got you flu

vaccination already.

Our after hours flu drop in clinic will be run on Thursday, 19th May between

5pm and 6pm (no appointments are necessary) to accommodate anyone who

needs to come in after work or school.
