BUILDING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS Kiwi Can classes for Term 1 are focusing on Positive Relationships and classes are exploring and practising concepts such as Fairness and Fairplay, Leadership, and Conflict Resolution.

So far lessons have explored ways to act kindly and safely, why we should include and encourage others and what it looks like to be a good role-model. The four-way tug-o-war has been a particularly popular activity this term, with plenty of opportunity to practice inclusion and encouragement, as well as a healthy degree of strategic collaboration! Di and Sophia have introduced creative ways of acknowledging positive behaviour in the Kiwi Can classes this term. There is the Taniwha award (for junior classes), the Tohu Rangatira (for being a role-model to your classmates) and Kai Pai pebbles (for showing specific positive behaviours in class). The Havelock School Double Dolphin award is presented at assembly to those students who have been observed demonstrating key behaviours beyond the Kiwi Can lessons, in the playground and classroom. Havelock School is now one of five Kiwi Can schools in the Marlborough region (along with Linkwater, Picton, Kaikoura and now Whitney Street). There are now 500 local kids attending Kiwi Can classes, part of the larger family of 15,000 Kiwi Can kids throughout the country! Visit http://www.fyd.org.nz/media/uploads/newsitems/fyd_grapevine_%238_-_feb_2015.pdf for FYD Marlborough’s latest newsletter.

Students from all classes are on the hunt for peers who exhibit the following qualities. Recognition will come mid-week at assembly via a Double Dolphin award.

EXERCISE SOUTHERN KATIPO 2015 • Exercise Southern Katipo is New Zealand’s largest military exercise,

held every two years in varying parts of the country. • More than 2000 military personnel will be in the Buller, Tasman

and Marlborough regions throughout the month of November 2015.

• In the scenario, a fictitious south west Pacific island is separated into two nations called Becara and Alpira. Becara is suffering from political instability and unrest. New Zealand has been requested to assemble and lead an intervention force comprising a coalition of Pacific Island Forum member states. Westport, Nelson Lakes and the Marlborough Sounds will become the troubled Becara region.

• Twelve countries have been invited to participate in or observe the exercise. • Fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, ships, light armoured vehicles (LAV) and other military

vehicles and equipment from the NZDF and invited militaries will be involved. • The exercise will test the ability of the NZDF to plan and conduct joint operations involving

sea, land and air assets. Exercises such as this are critical for the NZDF to ensure that its personnel are well trained and ready to respond to a crisis at home or overseas at any given moment. It will also give the NZDF further real time experience working with personnel from other nations.

• The 2011 exercise was already underway when it was diverted to a real-life crisis response to the Christchurch earthquake. This demonstrated the NZDF’s ability to successfully respond at short notice to a crisis.

• Members of the public will have the opportunity to get up close and personal to some of the activities, and information about that will be made available later this year.

You can keep up to date with the exercise from mid-2015 on the official Facebook page Southern Katipo and on the NZDF website www.nzdf.mil.nz For further information, contact: [email protected]

NEWS FROM THE HAVELOCK MUSSEL FESTIVAL Upon reading this, the Festival will be all on in two days’ time. We are all hoping for a fine and calm day. Tickets are selling well and all is on track for a most successful day. The Mayor and Natasha from More Radio FM were out here last week judging the best mussel themed displays. The Mayor said he was astounded by the care and thought that had gone into each display. The Committee would like to thank those that participated. They are all most attractive displays and all different from each other. In the end, however, there can only be one winner and the judges awarded the first prize to “Treasure Chest” although they were captured by the efforts of the preschool children and awarded them a morning tea. Do have a look at each display before the 14th. They are at Eyes on Nature, Inlet Bakery and Café, The Gallery Havelock, Havelock Motels and Motor Lodge, The Treasure Chest, Pelorus Community Preschool.

Entries in the Mussel Outfit Competition have been light but there is still time to enter. There are two categories, one for children under 11 and one for 11-16 year olds. Entry is free although the entrant needs to have purchased a Mussel Festival ticket ($15 for children) and there are great prizes donated by Clem and Pim Mellish for each category. Entry forms for the competition have been distributed to each school and further forms are available from the Havelock Healthcare Pharmacy Depot 56A Main Street, Havelock. Also, new to this year is the Kid’s Mussel Shell Decorating in the NIWA Kidzone where the kids can enjoy their creativity. We have arranged for artists in our community to be there between 11am -1pm. EDUCATION REVIEW OFFICE In late November the Education Review Office signalled that it was time for its usual visit to the school. During the interim, significant material has been prepared and made available for perusal. Two reviewers led by Julie Batstone will be on site for a few days from 23 March. Apart from meeting students, trustees and staff, the reviewers wish to make an opportunity available for parents and caregivers to share their views. To this end they have supplied a questionnaire the text of which appears below. Students will be asked to take one home in due course.

As you know we are carrying out an evaluation of your school.

We are interested in How effectively your school’s curriculum promotes student learning, engagement, progress and achievement. ERO is especially interested in how teachers, managers and the board evaluate the impact of teaching and learning (ie your school’s self-review practices). Please feel free to contribute to the ERO review. If you want to provide information to assist the review please fill in the questionnaire below and return to a designated box or give to a Review Officer during the onsite stage of the review. We look forward to being in your school. Nāku noa Julie Batstone Review Coordinator Please circle: staff member trustee parent/caregiver

THE JUMP ~ A SHORT FILM ABOUT THE FIRST BUNGY JUMP You may not have guessed it but it happened just up the road. In 1980 with a healthy mix of imagination, balls and roughly remembered Newtonian physics, a Kiwi bloke jumped off a bridge and started a worldwide phenomenon. ‘The Jump’ reveals unearthed footage of Bungy’s beginnings and tells the amazing tale of its unsung creator, Chris Sigglekow. Director Alex Sutherland and producer Rebekah Kelly of Thick As Thieves Productions are underway making the movie. Here’s just a taste of the early part of the story… the connection with the school is a bit like the bungy itself. Alex and Joe from the film team were down last week running auditions for one of the characters. Four of our lads spent some time under direction checking if they might have the right stuff. Towa, Ollie, Max and Jack enjoyed the challenge. No news yet as the team in Auckland has to complete remaining casting work. Who knows but great to have just a wee window into the making of a movie.

TRUSTEE CHANGE Following a recent by-election process Piers Throssell has been elected onto the school’s Board of Trustees as Staff Trustee. We wish Piers well in this new role and also thank Vicki Eden for her valuable contribution in her second tenure as trustee of the school. No doubt she will remain just as busy both in and beyond the classroom and at home.
