School Opening in September
On Tuesday, September 6th our school will be in session
for grades 1 – 7 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. During that time
teachers will take attendance and review school procedures.
We will have a list posted in the front of the school to indicate
which rooms the students will go to for the first day.
Students in grades 1, 2 and 3 will be dismissed from the same
location at 11:00 a.m.
Late in the summer, parents of new Kindergarten
students will receive letters containing information about their
schedule for the first week of school.
Due to the uncertainty regarding our enrolment,
students in grades 1-7 may spend the first few days in grade
groups and they will have contact with all the teachers at their
level. This provides an opportunity to get to know our new
students and create balanced classes. We thank parents in
advance for your patience during the opening days. We are a
very large school and experience has taught us that it is worth
taking the time to build classes carefully. We endeavor to
form classes as quickly as possible.
Student Placements
We place students in classes very carefully
and use the following criteria:
Student intellectual, social and emotional
development
Learning styles and strengths of students
Degrees of independence in students’ work
habits
Integration of special needs students
Separating students who do not work well
together
Adhering to class size limits
As always, at our school there may be combined
grade (split grade) classes at most grade levels.
There is a good chance that most Chimney Hill
students will be placed in a combined class two or
three times during their elementary school years.
There has been much research that shows students
perform just as well or better in combined classes.
Chimney Hill Track & Field
We had 56 athletes compete at William Watson and Bear Creek in two track meets this year. We had
many top individual performances and our relay teams were highly successful. Congratulations to these students!
Thank you to the following teachers for volunteering their time to coach our Track Team: Mr. Zadeiks,
Mr. Colp, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. H. Deol, Mrs. Kim, Mrs. VanBerkel, Mrs. Mauro, Ms. Holt, Ms. R. Johal and Mr. Findlay.

Mexican Exchange
In May we had a visit from Jules Verne Elem. school located in the heart of Mexico City. Students were
asked to write reflections on their experiences. Here is one of them from Arielle Guillermo.
Two weeks ago, something different happened in our classroom. Two weeks ago, I could never fathom
what sort of impact those students and their goodbye would leave me. The friends I would’ve made. The people
I’d bug. Maybe even the emotions I’d feel towards them.
The first pair of exchange students that I made friends with were extremely polite. One excruciatingly
kind-hearted and pretty brunette, and one boy with jet black hair and sparkly chocolate coloured eyes. They were
just about the most nicest and chivalrous people in my life.
A few days later I met a few more exchange students, and my smile grew bigger by the day. I never
thought this experience would change me this much. But, the more I cluelessly interacted with our visitors, the
stronger our bond became.
Two weeks later, it was finally time to say the last goodbye. Goodbye to all fun. Goodbye to them. Even
though we keep in contact through the internet, social media does not have the same effect as opposed to seeing
them in reality. And, its okay to shed some tears knowing that you might never see your friends again. “Everyone
wants happiness, no one wants pain. But, you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain.”
Let's get to know some more of our Student Council Members
Megan (vice president) - Chimney Hill is such an AMAZING school to be in. From kindergarten, there were loads of activities planned for us to do. all the way up to grade 7. Year end messages from your student council pods Pod 4 Pod 4 has really enjoyed being part of this Student Council! We are very grateful for the opportunities that we have received to help make Chimney Hill Elementary an extra special place to be! Our favourite event to plan was Red, White and Twin Day. Twin Day was a huge success and we are extremely proud of how it turned out. Our advice for students going into grade seven next year is to cher-ish very single moment of the day for the whole year because you will not realize how fast it will go by. Also, make sure to complete you homework and manage your time wisely during class. Thank you for being such a cooperative and kind school that allows us to plan such fun-filled events without any hesitation! Pod 3 Pod 3 loved being part of the student council. It was a fun and interesting experience for all of us. The one event that was our favourite was Dragon Day. This was our first year doing Dragon Day and it turned out be amazing. Our advice for future grade seven students is to make every day, every moment cheerful and memorable. For us being part of the student council was an memorable experience.
Pod 2 Hey everyone, it's pod 2! We are so proud of what our pod has accomplished this year. Being in Student Council has allowed us to make new friends, make great ideas for the school and be true leaders. Our advices for upcoming grade 7s is to get involved in as many opportunities as you can, and be a strong, confident and inspirational leader. Take advantage of your opportunities because before you know it, the school year is over. Pod 1 Pod 1 has absolutely loved being part of the Student Council and being able to play such a big role in the school. Words can't explain how appreciative we all are to have helped organize school events and make this year special for all of the students. Our favourite plan to organize and execute was our Earth Rangers campaign. This was so successful and we were happy to encourage the school to save endangered species. We also really enjoyed doing Genre of the Month. It was very fun to plan, make tickets and make bulletin boards. Our advice for next years grade sevens is to enjoy every moment of the year and make the most of it. This might be the last year you see one of your friends. Also, be sure to complete all of your homework and don't waste class time.

Grade Seven Students Compete in 2016 Gauss Contest Forty-one of our grade seven students recently competed in the 2016 Gauss Mathematics Contest organized by the University of Waterloo. The test, which is considered quite challenging, was comprised of 25 questions that progressively got more difficult. While it is out of a possible 150 points, a score over 100 on this test is considered very good and over 125 is considered exceptional. Gavin Rai achieved a score of 115, Shaan Sidhu and Elizabeth Inglis both earned 114, Kohen Lee and Maneet Deol both scored 112, and Cyrus Sandhu and Daniel Zhang both received 110. Also scoring over 100 were Quinn Lamont, Kahrun Atwal, Avaani Dhinsa, Jaya Dial, and Sabari Muthukumaran. The grade 7 teachers are very proud that almost 50% of our grade seven students participated in this very difficult contest.
