Tauranga Intermediate School Newsletter 26 July 2012 Vol 11!
Kia ora / Dear Parents
We have had our fair share of wet weather over the last week so I hope you have not had any flooding or leaks in your roof. Welcome back to Term Three which is eleven weeks and concludes on Friday 28 September 2012.
The NZCT AIMS GAMES will be held from Sunday 9 September to Friday 14 September and Tauranga Intermediate School is entering the largest team at 225 competitors.
We want to thank all of the parents of these students in advance for the support they are giving our team to maintain our position as top on the medal table with 49 medals in 2011.
LEARNING INTERVIEWSDespite all our sports activities our main focus is on adding value in reading, writing and maths. We strongly encourage all parents and students to attend the Learning Interviews next Tuesday 31 July from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm. Bring along $5 for the PTA raffle if you are interested.
SCHOOL BOYS CHOIRCONGRATULATIONS to Te Atirau, Mrs Storey and the Boys Choir on their trip to Auckland yesterday for the NZʼS GOT TALENT contest. The Choir was part of 5,000 entries nationwide and yesterday they were shortlisted to 250 and then we hope they will make the last go.
Regards, Brian Diver

BUSES....
At a recent bus meeting, concern was expressed about the behaviour of some of our students. The key points were:
* no food on any bus,* always present your bus pass,* no sharp or dangerous items on any bus,* only best behaviour is expected and acceptable.
Please support us with these simple requests as non compliance may result in the privilege of using the bus being withdrawn.
Please assist us with avoiding chaos at the school gate and driveway.
Please don't come into the school grounds unless it is vital as large traffic flows are potentially dangerous.
Seriously consider picking up and dropping off your children from the Fraser Cove car park - it's much safer and far easier to get in and out of compared to the very dangerous Fraser Street - Eighteenth Avenue intersection - avoid this at all costs.
SCHOOL FEES....
A big thank you to those families who have paid their students school curriculum fees/donation.
As it is now half way through the school year we would really appreciate the payment of these fees from those families who have not yet paid .

50 years ago the scourge of racism was stifling the development of millions of children in America. In 1963, a core group of these courageous young people stood up and said, “Enough!” The story of these child marchers imparts vital lessons that the 21st century child desperately needs to learn from - courage, resistance to peer pressure, empathy, non-violence and conviction.Through Angel’s Eyes brings the story of the 1963 Alabama child marches to life through the eyes of Angel Dunbar - and in Angel we finally have a role model for our times!

ACADEMIC REPORT
It is the start of another very busy and productive term at Tauranga Intermediate School. Teachers and students have been working hard to make academic gains in Mathematics, English and individual inquiry within their classroom setting. All of our students have recently finished their iKAN (Individual knowledge assessment in numeracy) assessment. This gives us comparative data for our students in their number knowledge.
Classroom teachers use this information to find students needs and plan their mathematics programme to address these needs. Syndicates will then set goals in terms of the data to see that there is value added to all our students irrespective of their ability over the academic year.It is pleasing to see a shift school-wide over the three terms illustrated in the graph below.
The expectation for all students at Tauranga Intermediate is to move at least one stage in the iKAN assessment in a academic year.
Ask your child what stage they are currently at and see if they can identify their next steps to move on a stage.
Shane Cunliffe and Gareth Scholes.Academic Deputy Principals.

NZ’S GOT TALENT UPDATE.......
Congratulations to the Boys Choir (Playing Up ) and Fletch Oxford Room 18 who sang to the Judges of NZʼs Got Talent at the Genesis Energy Theatre, Manukau, Wednesday night 25 July.
The Boys Choir was a huge hit with the audience and all three judges said YES!!!! exuberantly especially Rachel Hunter, who loved them.
Fletch was also a big hit AND moved Rachel Hunter to tears AND a STANDING OVATION !!!! AND a big YES! YES! YES! from all three judges.
Sooooo.... fingers crossed that they all go through to the next round.
FYI. More that 5,000 people auditioned for NZʼs Got talent and only 250 were selected....so our students have done extremely well so far.
