IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MEASLES MUMPS AND RUBELLA VACCINATIONS
Information sent on behalf of Berkshire Healthcare School-aged Immunisation Team
There has been a sharp increase in the number of cases of measles reported nationally and globally
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-47940710 as well as an increase in Mumps cases for 15-24 year
olds. Berkshire Healthcare provides immunisations against infectious diseases for all school-aged
children, and we want to assure you it is not too late to get your child vaccinated. Children are at risk to
themselves and the wider community if they have not received two doses of MMR (usually given at 13
months and 3½ years). Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can be very unpleasant and
sometimes lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications, initial symptoms may be similar
to cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose and high temperature.
Measles is a notifiable disease and if your child has not received two combined MMR (Measles, Mumps
and Rubella) doses of the vaccine or, has previously received the singular MMR vaccines, they will NOT be
protected and they are AT RISK of contracting the illness as well as passing it on to others, especially at
risk are the vulnerable (babies and individuals with life limiting conditions). Two combined MMR doses
are required for full protection. If you are unsure about your child’s immunisation history, check their Red
Book.
There is no charge for this vaccination and we offer a number of community clinics across Berkshire both
after school and on Saturdays, the service is available to all children attending state, independent and
special schools. This vaccination is not routinely available from GP practices for children of school age.
If your child attends a school in Wokingham, Reading or West Berkshire and you would like your child to
be vaccinated please contact us by emailing [email protected] or calling 01189
207575.
If your child attends a school in Slough, Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead or Bracknell Forest and you
would like your child to be vaccinated, please contact us by emailing
[email protected], or calling 01753 636759.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
What is FGM?
Female genital mutilation is also called cutting or circumcision; it involves the cutting or removal of the female genitals. This can mean anything from a scratch to cutting and stitching. FGM is a human rights violation that is harmful to the health and wellbeing of girls and women.
There are no health benefits to carrying out FGM on girls – there is only harm. Some of the health risks include: Severe Pain and excessive bleeding (haemorrhage)
Genital tissue swelling and infections
Fever, shock and death.
Urinary problems and infections.
Painful periods and difficulty passing menstrual blood.
Scar tissue
Sexual problems, increased risk of childbirth complications and new-born deaths.
Psychological problems (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and low self-esteem)
Summer holidays are a time when there is a higher risk of FGM happening to girls. This is because
some families will choose to carry out FGM over the summer holidays in the UK or may go to their home
countries or abroad to carry out the practice. This is also a time when families may come under pressure
from relatives and friends in the UK or their home countries to have their daughters cut. As a parent or
guardian you have a duty to protect your girls from FGM at all times.
The Law - FGM has been illegal in the UK since 1985. It is also illegal to take a British girl or habitual
British resident to another country to have FGM done or to help arrange for FGM to be carried out on a
girl. Anyone caught doing or arranging FGM will be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison and / or fined.
In 2015 new changes were made to the law on FGM. These changes include:
FGM Protection Orders: anyone can ask for a court to issue a protection order if they think that a girl
is at risk of FGM. If the court believes that a girl is at risk of FGM they can give instructions to the
family to protect that girl. For example: the court can seize the girls passport or require that a girl
is brought back to the UK from abroad.
Failure to Protect: parents have a legal duty to protect their daughters from FGM. This means that
parents can be prosecuted if they do not prevent FGM happening to their daughter. For example:
leaving a girl with a relative when you think FGM could be a risk and failing to ensure that your
daughter does not undergo FGM.
FGM is a Criminal Offence
It is child abuse and a form of violence against women and girls.

Parents
What can you do to ensure your daughter is safe from FGM?
Speak to your extended family to make sure they know about the UK law and the legal consequences of inflicting FGM on your daughter will have for you.
Share this information with family and friends.
Discuss the risks of FGM with all family members to ensure they understand and are able to protect your daughter from FGM.
Develop a plan with your daughter so that she understands what FGM is, that no-one is allowed to do it to her and that she must come to you if she thinks she is at risk from FGM.
Speak to the Safeguarding Manager at school who will be able to direct you to the best person to help.
What you can do if you are at risk?
There are a number of places that you can seek help:
You can talk to your Safeguarding Manager, your teacher or your GP about your concerns.
If you are in the UK you can also ring a support service especially for girls at risk of FGM, like the
If it is an emergency and you think someone you know is at immediate risk of being taken out of the
UK for FGM, ring one of the numbers above or the police on 999.
