KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 10 - 2019 Friday 2 nd May, 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It would appear that we have seen the last of the un-seasonally warm days which we enjoyed over the holidays and at the beginning of term, particularly with the rain forecast for today. It won’t be long before we see the replacement of the broad brimmed hat for sun protection for the warmer beanie as we head toward the cooler months. Knowing the irregularity of Melbourne weather however, we continue to encourage the children and families at all times of the year, to monitor their choice of summer or winter uniform items, including hats, jumpers, coats, tracksuit pants according to the weather. Last Wednesday we held a whole school assembly to commemorate Anzac Day. All the students are to be commended for their respectful observation to our school student leaders who led the assembly which included the reading of ‘In Flanders Fields’ the Ode of Remembrance and the explanation of the Last Post and minute’s silence, particularly as we were experiencing sound difficulties. Each class had prepared for the commemoration with activities around anniversary of the First World War, and as is our tradition, the creation of a wreath. If you were unable to attend the assembly, please view the display in the main building foyer. Thank you to Mrs Roisin Goad and the student s of 5/6 Goad for planning and conducting the assembly. It was the school leaders and 5/6 Goad who selected one of the class created wreaths to be laid at the Melton commemorative service last Thursday. The selected wreath was designed and created by Year 5/6 Price. A very special thank you must be given to Dakota Galea in Year 6 for representing Kurunjang Primary School at the memorial service. Dakota was also representing the Melton network of schools for her reading of the Requiem, which for those of you who may have been present was delivered with utmost care and respect. Thank you Dakota! Please enjoy the photos of the Melton commemorative service which are in this edition of the newsletter. On Monday the Year 6s received their letter from the Department of Education regarding placement of student’s state wide commencing Year 7 in 2020. It is important for families to read the Department’s placement policy including the permanent address guidelines and the priority order of placement. This did cause some disappointment last year for some families as the growth of Melton has restricted the number of students out of their designated neighborhood school, being able to be accepted in to another local government school. There are 3 Government secondary colleges in the township of Melton - Kurunjang, Melton and Staughton secondary colleges. Catholic Regional College and Melton Christian College have previously been the only Independent or Catholic secondary colleges, however in 2020, Heathdale Christian College, Melton Campus, is commencing Year 7 and future secondary years provision. Heathdale will be forwarding us leaflets to explain the provision of secondary schooling at the Melton Campus which we will pass on to you for your information. Please see attached to this newsletter Melton Secondary Colleges tour dates for prospective Year 7 2020 students. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Thank you to the families who completed their form immediately and have returned them to school. All applications must be returned to your child’s class teacher at Kurunjang Primary School by Friday 17 th May. The placements are determined by the secondary schools and notification of Year 7 placement will be made after Wednesday 7 th August. ~ Learning Together STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS Student of the week awards are made each week and announced in the newsletter on a Thursday. CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

Students in Foundation Potts have been learning about Shapes recently in Maths. They have been exploring different shapes and the number of edges and vertices each has. Students used Geometry Sticks to make their own shapes and were able to explore what happens if they make an irregular shape. The rich conversations showed that students were engaged and loved the activities!

ANZAC DAY

On Thursday the 25th of April thousands of people attended Melton’s Cenotaph to pay respect to those men and women who went to war and especially, for those who never returned. Dakota Galea was not only one of those people, but she had a very special job. Dakota won the opportunity to read the ANZAC Requiem at the mid-morning service. Although Dakota was very nervous, she read the Requiem with pride and many people congratulated her for her beautiful reading. Dakota was very lucky to meet Ray, a 97-year-old Veteran who served in the Second World War. Ray, although feeling very emotional on this day, was

happy to have a photo with Dakota. Dakota also met Ian who is the President of the RSL and a war veteran himself. Ian was the Master of ceremonies on this day and was also happy to have a photo with Dakota.

‘BE KIND’ DAY

JSC had chosen ‘Be Kind’ day for the fundraiser last term. All the money we raised has been sent to Dolly’s Dream. It was a great success and we raised $107. We appreciate all of the gold coin donations that were sent from parents and students to help raise money for the fundraiser.

The students completed a ‘Be Kind’ card for a friend with a personal message aimed at helping them feel good. These cards will be displayed in the school until next term when they will be handed out to the person named on them. Everyone gets a card to feel happy and appreciated without being left out. Please talk to your child about the importance of being kind and making others feel good. Tarah, Carl and the JSC group
