A time of transition, from adolescence to adulthood, from being dependent on others to depending on themselves, from Big Sky to somewhere else. The 12 th graders are starting to receive their post-secondary placements, make post- secondary plans for career and, with some trepidation, envision their livesoutside of the Big Sky Community. In the short history of Lone Peak High School, approximately 95% of our students seek out a post-secondary placement of some kind; either local 4 year Universities or technical colleges or to all corners of the United States to continue their educations. Post-secondary education in the world today is becoming more and more expensive and financial accessibility is more challenging year in and year out for working families. Dear Big Sky School District Community,

Greetings from the Superintendent’s office! We have officially reached the halfway point in the year and it has been a very quick year with a lot of exciting initiatives happening in the district. The halfway point is a significant benchmark for our students and for our teachers. At all levels of the educational process this provides a time to reflect on what we have accomplished so far and prepare for what needs to be done moving toward the end of the year.

This is an especially important time for our seniors. Our 12th graders are approaching the final semester of their high school careers. A time of transition, from adolescence to adulthood, from being dependent on others to depending on themselves, from Big Sky to somewhere else. The 12th graders are starting to receive their post-secondary placements, make post-secondary plans for career and, with some trepidation, envision their lives’ outside of the Big Sky Community.

Our graduates of Lone Peak High School are extremely fortunate to be able to allay those costs somewhat through the generosity of our community. The Friends Of Big Sky Education (FOBSE) Community Scholarship program is proud to announce that $42,000 in scholarship dollars have been raised and will be allocated to individual students from Lone Peak class of 2017! Have a great three-day weekend and thanks for letting us work with your students.

It is time once again for Nordic skiing at Lone Mountain Ranch (LMR). Each year, LMR generously allows each class in K-8th grades to cross country ski on two different days (Kindergarten 1 day). The Ranch provides the ski equipment to us at no charge and an instructor which the PTO pays for. Here is the schedule for Nordic Ski Days:

Hello Middle School Parents,

I wanted to let you know that I am starting a National Math Club for the second semester starting January 30th. It is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and is totally free. It will be from 3:30-4:30 on Mondays and Tuesdays in my room (Dr. Eisele). Students are welcome to come when it works for their schedule.

“The National Math Club is a national program that gives students the opportunity to engage in mathematics that is non-competitive, fun and different from "textbook math." Created in 2007, it is a completely free MATHCOUNTS program.”

Math club will be aimed at students of all abilities. The club will provide popcorn and a relaxing, safe space for middle school students to: 1) Receive extra homework help 2) Play math games 3) Have extra practice with concepts as directed by teacher or parent or student 4) Build new math skills through tackling more challenging problems from the National MathCounts Club and also the Math-

Counts Competition series. Should the coming year demonstrate a demand for a competition team, a team could be started fall 2017.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. I previously taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and Algebra II at my prior school and ran a National Math Club for this age group, so I have prior experience I wanted to share with students.

I hope to see some of your children there!

The 9th Annual Ophir Middle School Science Fair will take place Thursday, February 9th. It will be held in the LPHS/OMS gym from 12:00-3:00 pm. Judging will be held from 12:30-2:00 pm, with awards being made around 2:30 pm. Parents are invited to join their child at 2:30 pm for a celebration and reception. Clean-up follows at 3:00 pm.

A message from the Gallatin City-County Health Department : Flu season is upon us. The flu is considered widespread in Montana now so it is not unusual we are seeing it in our local communities here in Bozeman, Big Sky and the surrounding areas. Parents certainly need to keep their kids home if they have the flu and to avoid giving it to other kids or adults. Of course, the best way to avoid getting the flu is to get the flu vaccine. Good hand washing, covering your cough, staying home if you are sick, and not touching your eyes, nose or mouth are also all important towards stopping the spread of flu and keeping yourself healthy.

Click on the following links for great information from the CDC: Flu Guide For Parents and Everyday Prevention Actions.

Brown Bag Lunch Talk: Conservation Easements 12:00 - 1:00 pm at the BSCO Office

Presented by the Big Sky Natural Resource Council Bring your lunch to the BSCO office on Thursday, February 9, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., to learn how Montana Land Reliance (MLR) has conserved nearly 300,000 acres in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and enjoy some impressive wildlife videos from MLR’s conservation easement properties.

Jessie Wiese, MLR’s Southwest Manager, will discuss how MLR partners with private landowners to permanently protect agricultural lands, fish and wildlife habitat, and open space. In Gallatin County alone, MLR has worked with 50 landowners to protect over 35,750 acres, 65.6 miles of streamfront, and over 15,580 acres of elk habitat. In Madison County, MLR has worked with 110 landowners to protect over 129,700 acres of private lands, 224 miles of streamfront, and nearly 75,000 acres of elk habitat.
