PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Mid‐term report cards were handed out to students on November 13. These report cards provided students and parents with informa on on student progress mid‐way through the semester. Hopefully, these reports have made their way home and if not copies are available at the office. Parent/Teacher interviews were held on November 14 and there was a large parent turn out to meet with teachers and discuss student progress. I recommend if parents have any ques ons or concerns about their son or daughter’s progress to date, contact the teacher to discuss the ma er further. Please phone the school or teacher’s emails are available on the school website. October and November have been very busy months with many curricular and extra‐curricular ac vi es being offered to our students. Over 120 students and parents a ended our Scholarship Evening on October 24 to find out more about how to successfully apply for scholarships, bursaries, financial awards, and transi on to post‐secondary schooling. Thank you to Ms. Beck, Ms. Kandola, and Mr. Khaira for the informa on provided this evening. Student Council organized Spirit Week with many students and staff dressing up in the appropriate dress for the day during Halloween week. Our Grade 9 students went with parents and family members to work on November 6 during the Na onal “Take Our Kids to Work” day. Mr. Mcleod coordinated various students and groups to perform in the Remembrance Day assemblies on November 7. The Careers Department organized an Educa on and Career Fair on November 13 for students and parents to explore career focus areas and get more informa on regarding opportuni es in the community. The Athle cs Program completed the Fall season with 7 teams compe ng in volleyball, soccer, and cross‐country. A high‐light was the Senior Boys Soccer Team qualifying for the Provincials to be held November 21 to 23 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. I would like to acknowledge our coaches, sponsor teachers and parents for their con nued support of our stu‐dents. A big thanks to the following coaches who gave their me and effort to make the following fall athle c programs possible: Ms. Johnson and Ms. Meinkina (Gr. 8 Girls Volleyball), Ms. Sitch and Ms. Parmar (Jr. Girls Volleyball), Mr. Wel‐lington and Ms. Way (Sr. Girls Volleyball), Mr. Klein and Ms. Clark (Gr. 8/9 Boys Soccer), Mr. Mar n (Jr. Boys Soccer), Mr. Bowie (Sr. Boys Soccer), Ms. Muirhead, Ms. Beck, and Ms. Bayat (Cross Country). Finally, we welcome Mr. Lewis (Science/Chemistry) to our school. We thank Mr. A. Hardman for all his service to Queen Elizabeth and wish him well in the Vancouver School District.

Work Experience

A “job” well‐done to Mr. Hardman’s, Ms. Dhillon’s, Ms. Loxtercamp and Mr.Chatwin’s Co‐op students who have successfully completed their first work experiences! Once again, Employers were impressed with QE students’ willingness to learn, their sense of responsibility and their eagerness to go above and beyond. We es mate that 20‐50% of our Co‐op students establish connec ons and retain jobs due to their work experience placements. We have even heard back from past Graduates who are working their way through post‐secondary in a job they obtained through a Co‐op Program. A thank you to our Career Program Teachers who educate and prepare our students for the world of work beyond QE and well done to the students who step up and become produc ve members of the community.

RCMP Youth Academy

This 8‐10 day program, (April 16‐24) gives students interested in pursuing a career in policing an opportunity to experience police training and par cipate in simula ons. This highly compe ve program requires a commitment to the community and physical fitness. Applica ons are due in the Career Centre by November 29th, 2013.

Take Our Kids To Work 2013

Thank you to all volunteer hosts, parents, rela ves and friends who welcomed our students to their workplace for a day. Approximately eighty‐five percent of the Grade 9 students at Queen Elizabeth Secondary took part in this eye‐opening, real‐world opportunity.

Early Childhood Care and Educa on

This is a great opportunity for those students looking to get ahead in pursuit of a post‐secondary educa on in Early Childhood Care and Educa on through Surrey College. Classes meet on Tuesday nights from January to June. Applica ons are due by November 28th.

On November 7, Queen Elizabeth held its annual Remembrance Day assemblies. This year we had many special

guests in a endance. Joining us from the Whalley Legion (Branch 229) was Andy Anderson and George Garne .

Also joining us were Mike McKay, Superintendent of Schools for Surrey, Jordan Tinney, Deputy Superintendent,

Trustee Reni Masi, former teacher and Principal at Queen Elizabeth, Ms. Bonnie Deren, Principal of Queen

Elizabeth Adult Educa on, RCMP Constable Doherty, Piper Brianne Young, and the Honourable Peter Fassbender,

Minister of Educa on and former graduate of Queen Elizabeth Secondary. The student led assemblies were an

amazing success which showcased the talents of many of our students. I would like to recognize the work by our

volunteers and the many students who par cipated in the assemblies. Thanks to Helen P., Harisimran C., Maria H.,

Queen Elizabeth contributed to my career path in HUGE WAY! A teacher at QE saw my poten al and pushed me to achieve more than I believed was possible. Chef Brian Roodenrys was so passionate about food and he pushed me to discover mine. He helped me a ain my first job at the Wedgewood Hotel and for that I am grateful.
