he intensifi ed demand for greater datacenter effi ciency, control and fl exibility has brought about the phenomenal growth of virtualization. To ensure underlying virtualization performance issues are
handled, Diskeeper Corporation has released new V-locity 2, designed to deliver invisible background optimization of all Windows Guest operating systems running on the VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V platforms.
Effectively shared resources are of critical importance in a virtual environment but are severely impacted by three key barriers:
1. I/O bandwidth is a critical hardware resource for virtual platform performance. Fragmented fi les and fragmented free space create more I/O activity than is needed to directly get a job done. This excess use of a virtual platform’s limited bandwidth occurs in both host platforms and the virtual machines.

Solving the Bloated Virtual Disk Problem
The V-locity Virtual Disk Compaction feature is the first of
its kind to provide a window on how much a thin/dynamic
virtual disk can be shrunk. It also allows the sys admin to,
with a single click, compact any of those selected virtual

1 IntelliWrite
The only technology that prevents up to 85% of fragmentation before it can happen. In addition to writing larger sequential disk I/Os from Windows VMs (for much better overall performance), it makes less work for copy-on-write technology which copies/tracks every write. Less need for defrag means less writes to track and fewer I/Os used.
2 InvisiTasking
Applications and services within VMs cannot effectively prioritize I/O because they have limited knowledge of Host hardware resource usage. Without InvisiTasking, a background defrag process will cut across the production needs of other VMs. InvisiTasking guarantees completely invisible optimization of all Windows operating systems on supported virtualization platforms. It also eliminates the need for scheduling or monitoring defrag where it’s needed, even when VMs are dynamically added or removed.
3 Virtual Disk Intelligence

Increasingly sophisticated software and hardware is being used in modern storage environments—from disk-level technologies to massively scalable network storage facilities. There are a number of myths and misconceptions regarding the continuing need for a solution to manage fragmentation in these environments. From the time nonvolatile storage was introduced decades ago, there have been layers of abstraction added between the users/applications and those devices. The fact that modern data centers go well beyond the single direct attached drive and employ advanced storage infrastructures with additional layers of abstraction, does not eliminate the need to address fragmentation issues. To help VARs handle what may be lurking in their enterprise customers’ storage arrays, here are 10 guidelines to prevent fragmentation, which reduces disk write activity, saving energy and reducing operational costs. These best practices bring to light the hidden costs, real impact and potential “gotchas” in keeping complex enterprise systems performing optimally.

hardware platform, excessive and unnecessary use of hardware/storage resources by one VM slows not only the requesting VM, but all other VMs on that platform.
5 rapid delivery of essential data Placing data that is frequently
accessed in the optimal performance region on disks minimizes the amount of disk head movement to collect data files scattered across the disk, reducing wear and tear and power costs while speeding access to frequently used “important” data.
6 compact free space Free space fragmentation is
often overlooked and will inevitably increase the likelihood and degree of fragmentation of data and system files. The ability to consolidate space into a small handful of very large segments in order to improve future file-write performance is an important consideration. Consolidating free space prevents file-write performance degradation for future write activity on a given volume. VARs should look for ways to achieve this automatically and consistently, without administrative intervention.
7 daily check list and fragmentation
Rather than allowing files to fragment when written, look for solutions that prevent fragmentation from occurring in the first place, by intelligently writing contiguous files to the disk so system resources are not wasted creating fragmentation. Systems that operate reliably and
without complaint (i.e., help desk calls) are less likely to be replaced. They’ll be used until new production requirements dictate more powerful hardware, which is a real business reason to upgrade and not a “break-fix” reactive reason. This enables site owners to postpone refresh costs and the attendant overtime overhead that goes with it.
8 metadata and system files fragmentation challenges
Seek a solution that offers an effective way to handle crucial system files and metadata files. Some defragmenters offer only online defragmentation modes and cannot solve fragmentation of most metadata files as well as system files, such as the paging file or hibernation file. A fragmented hibernation file, for example, can dramatically increase the time for a hibernating laptop to return to a usable state and, if free space is not effectively consolidated, expansion of the paging file on a system has a very high likelihood of fragmenting.
9 solid state drive (ssd) optimization
Information stating that SSDs should not be defragmented is based on unproven and incorrect theories related to NAND Flash performance characteristics. The issue with NAND Flash storage is not the medium itself, but rather the software/firmware that controls it. Scientific investigations have clearly shown that, as free space fragmentation increases, the write-performance of
many SSDs decreases. It is important to implement solutions that can automatically detect and maintain SSD write-performance at peak levels.
10 centralized performance management
Thorough reporting and event alerting on applications running in production environments has become increasingly important. IT departments and service providers are often tasked with meeting particular service level agreements (SLAs) for uptime, performance, etc. This requires greater involvement and knowledge regarding all applications, processes and services that contribute to—or detract from—meeting those defined service obligations. Look for a solution that provides reporting, alerts and centralized management. The ability and responsibility of IT departments in enterprise organizations to control a process or program cannot be understated.
summary In short, no matter how or where your customers store data, solving file fragmentation is as vital for peak system performance and reliability as it has ever been. The Chief Technology Officer of a large travel agency was in charge of the specialty and emerging markets which were running close to 350 servers—both physical and virtual—in their four data centers. He told us they use a pretty complex environment with six high-end Dell blade servers that host approximately 230 virtual servers in a four-node active failover configuration using two EMC Clariion SANs as the storage base.
He has been happy to give an endorsement for V-locity virtual platform disk optimizer and Diskeeper performance software, and will be adding more licenses. As they process a million and a half dollars of business a day in credit cards, the computer systems have to be reliable. They have one full-time Data Center employee whose responsibility is to manage I/O response time.
“V-locity is fabulous. We have seen a significant performance increase after installing Diskeeper—working its magic on the six physical servers which each has 40 virtualized Windows 2008 R2 servers. It has been great,” reported the CTO.
the challenge:The agency has at least 200 virtual Hyper-V servers deployed at any given time. They have two EMC SANs, a Clariion CX340b and a Clariion CX700. The CX700, which is fairly old technology, uses low-end 5400 RPM SATA drives—not the fastest drives around but very inexpensive; a 300-gig drive costs $50. They run 240 of these drives.
A mini-experiment was run and they discovered that the V-locity product allowed them to put the majority of the
virtual servers on low-cost, low-end drives while continuing to get the same performance out of them that they had been getting out of a high-end fiber channel 15,000-K drive. This was due to the disks at both the host and guest level being so optimized by V-locity. This change reduced storage costs by literally hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The IT staff had to do some specialized configuration on the EMC so that the throughput could be maximized at the hardware level, but that was reasonably easy to do. They were concerned with the fact that during the virtualization of the VHD files, a lot of those servers use dynamically expanding files for disk space reasons and conservation primarily. With V-locity, instead of putting virtual machines on $550 disks, they were able to put them on $50 disks. The cost difference was phenomenal.
the solution:A large fiscal budget was allocated for procurement of the higher performance drives because of the slow systems and the virtual servers not performing up to expectations. The CTO figured a unique way to leverage the licensing costs to alleviate the $300,000 worth of new hardware needed. The cost difference between SATA drives and fiber channel drives is very big. A SATA drive is $50 to $75. For a 300-gig fiber channel drive they were paying $900—a huge difference.
A re-configuration was done on the SAN with V-locity deployed on both the host and guest level. The average response time went from 50-60 milliseconds down to less than five milliseconds. The V-locity solution was more than satisfactory and everything was performing much, much better.

When you install Diskeeper or V-locity via Diskeeper
Administrator, those installations are preconfigured to
then send report and alert data back to that instance
of Diskeeper Administrator. However, there are many
means by which to install Diskeeper that do not include
our central management piece. While you may have
alternative preferred methods for deploying Diskeeper
and V-locity across your network, you may well be
interested in using some of the many other robust
management aspects of Diskeeper Administrator. For
most of those features, you’ll want to ensure that the
end point installs are aware of the location of the
management app, and are sending it data. Having the
clients aware of the Administrator supports valuable
IT management functions like license management,
performance reports, alerts and more.
Good news is that there are a number of ways Diskeeper
and V-locity installations can become “aware” of
Diskeeper Administrator in order to send it information.
The easiest discovery method is: using Diskeeper
Administrator, scan the network and discover Diskeeper
or V-locity clients on networked computers. A discovered
system automatically becomes aware of the presence of
Diskeeper Administrator and will start sending it data.

The bottom line for me is that I can’t imagine running an environment without Diskeeper. I don’t consider Diskeeper to be optional. It’s a requirement as far as I’m concerned.

Diskeeper stood out because of the claim that it runs as a background process and is capable of operating only in the very short moments while the file was not being manipulated. I just installed and let IntelliWrite do its thing. After we installed Diskeeper, we were very happy to find that it did, in fact, complete the defrag job. Not only did it repair the initial fragmentation issues, but it does, in fact, keep on top of the fragmentation over time.
I am usually VERY wary of installing services that are always running on production servers. I have to say this tool does have a very small resource footprint for both CPU and Memory, and the net effect of Disk I/O by far is in the positive. As for an install time solution, there is a command line
option in setup that can be used to specify the Diskeeper
Administrator’s location. The setup command line to specify
a Diskeeper Administrator computer name with a Diskeeper
or V-locity install is:
Setup.exe /s /V“/qn ADMINNAME=\“DKAdminComputerName\””
In summary, even when you use alternative means to deploy
Diskeeper and/or V-locity across your network, there are
many options to set up clients for central management via
Diskeeper Administrator.
The data (Diskeeper Administrator computer name) is stored
in a text file on each Diskeeper client. So, another way to
direct end points to Diskeeper Administrator would be to
copy this text file, with the Diskeeper Administrator name
already listed, to any/all Diskeeper client(s). This can be a
handy option for image-based deployments.
