School Context

Newsham Primary School is a large two form entry primary school in the coastal town of Blyth, Northumberland. We have a 78 part time place Nursery and a Breakfast

Club that operates from 8.00am to 8.40am each day. Our After School Activity Club runs from 3.15pm to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday each week.

We have very high expectations and aspirations for our children. We understand that low expectation can create one of the biggest barriers to achievement and we refuse

to allow that barrier to exist at Newsham Primary School. We believe that every child should be given every opportunity to fulfil his or her individual maximum potential.

We strive to instil in our children a love of learning, a thirst for knowledge and a natural curiosity in the world around them. Our school motto “Let your light shine” reflects

our belief in our children and our intention to celebrate success. The Pupil Premium Grant represents a significant proportion of our budget and we are committed to

ensuring it is spent to maximum effect.

We are determined that our children will understand and demonstrate the lifelong values that underpin our ethos and code of behaviour at Newsham. The values are

based on our 7 R’s;

Respectful, Resilient, Reflective, Relentless, Resourceful, Responsible and Reasoning.

Our school population (RAISEonline 2015)

Newsham Primary School is located in an area of high social deprivation and a significant percentage of children are eligible for free school meals. Whilst challenges exist in

terms of our school population, staff are committed to ensuring these challenges are mitigated so that all children can reach their full potential. A personalised, carefully

monitored approach to curriculum provision exists, which enables us to identify individual barriers and arrange targeted support so that our children can flourish

academically and personally.

The ethos throughout school is positive, proactive and democratic. Distributed leadership is fully embedded and enthusiasm, motivation and laughter are evident

throughout school.

Our reputation in the community is very strong. Our pupils are extremely happy, well behaved and are working hard. We are proactive and enthusiastic and look forward to

the future with confidence.

Objectives of Pupil Premium Spending Our key objective in using the Pupil Premium Grant is to narrow the gap between pupil groups. As a school we have an excellent track record of ensuring pupils make good

progress, but historically levels of attainment have been lower for FSM pupils, this is also a national trend. Through targeted interventions we are working to eliminate

barriers to learning and progress. For children who start school with low attainment on entry, our aim is to ensure that they make accelerated progress in order to reach

higher than age related expectations as they move through school.

We have analysed our data thoroughly, examined impact of current interventions and have made use of a range of research to inform our decision making:

Parental engagement

Importance of quality teaching

Feedback and peer tutoring

Our aim is to continue to increase the quality of day to day teaching through increasing the percentage of outstanding teaching across the school using an additional non-

class based teacher based in Key Stages 1 and 2. We are looking at using pre-teaching as an effective intervention.

We want to continue to raise standards in reading by enthusing children to become avid readers and will extend our resources in the new school library and focus on

improving home reading.

We are adopting a new whole school approach to supporting children in developing their skills as writers and will focus on developing children’s speaking skills to support

this. We want all children to be able to talk confidently about their learning, where they are and what they need to do to improve. Every child will have a mentoring

session each term with their class teacher or Senior Manager.

To increase parental engagement in learning, we are extending the support on offer for parents through skills sessions, training in the curriculum and through providing

targeted parents’ meetings to support them in helping children at home. We also seek to encourage fit and healthy lifestyles. Training for staff has included a focus on

higher order thinking, metacognition and developing cognitive conflict. It will feature on an ongoing basis supporting to achieve with regards to the challenges of the new

curriculum.
