The Convention, run by the Filipino Jaycees was a true success. Not only in theexcellent way it was run, but also for how your chapter fared.
HCJ came away with many awards for both individual and chapter achievemenYou can read all about it on Page 6.

__________________________________________Healthy Baby Contes
HCJ has once again taken up the Healthy Baby Contesthese past few weeks only being the public result of months work behind the scenes.
Were especially proud to possibly be starting a new
tradition: the new member as Healthy Baby Chairman! Lastyear Ken Sum did us proud taking the job in his 1st year andnow Allan Wu has been a big inspiration, having only joinedus this January!
Our chapter wide involvement began on Sunday, August
30th as members, fellow chapter friends, State Officers andeven our US Jaycees President, John Weber, gathered to stuff the goodie bags that are given to allcontestants. It was a great example of teamwork and Jaycee work ethic, capped off with the serving ofsome ono food to express our gratitude for all the help. We were now ready for next week.
1st Preliminary, Pearlridge Uptown
Saturday, September 5. 8AM, Pearlridge Mall, Uptown. At this time of the day there were just 2 kinds
people there. Healthy Baby workers and senior citizens doing their morning laps around the mall. Our
group got on the job right away, setting up the registration table, the tabulation center upstairs, the goodibag table and everything else needed to run a successful event.
While Krystal Lee brought the goodie bags in her van,the most anticipated arrival was Ken Sum, since he wasbringing our food. Luckily he arrived on time, heading off
any mass defections or small scale rioting by the hungry.Amazing how much work a person will do for a doughnut.
Chairman Allan handled our arriving judges, gettingthem fed and settled before showtime. Despite his beingutterly new to the Healthy Baby Contest he took every joband hurdle in stride.
Our team handled approximately 150 baby contestants, all the way from the registration table to tstage line to the stage steps and on to the goodie bag table that was the final stop. While that whappening downstairs, our upstairs team tabulated the scoring, put our Walk Ins into the system a
printed up certificates. A pro effort all the way around.
Mahalo To Our Pearlridge Crew:
Lindley Low, Kevin Nitta, Randy Kim, Stan Fichtman, Leigh Ohta, Krystal Lee, Faye Nakashima, Mike Fujio
Carrie Azama, Thayer Goya, Melyssa Ching, Deanne Morimoto, Gerald Chung, Anthony Sato, Jon Nishihara, Al
Wu, Jon Nakasone, Annette Lum, Jason Tomita, Ana Che, Ramy So, Ryan Ng, Steven Antonio and, yes, even Ken Su

Convention Recap!____________________________________________If youve read the front page you already know
the big news HCJ was once again honored withthe #1 spot in the Parade of Chapters. That meanswere the top Jaycees chapter in Hawaii so far thisyear!
But theres always more to State Convention thanjust POC. So join us at the Ohana Airport Hotel onthe morning of Saturday, August 29 th.
We were honored to have Honolulu CityCouncilman Donovan Dela Cruz give us the fullbenefit of his experience in a lesser-known area ofhis life. Before serving on the City Council, Mr. Dela
Cruz was in marketing.
His training centered on the basics of this area, including the marketing of our Jaycees chapters. Allwho attended remarked on the great points raised inthe training.
Our National President Visits The Islands
He was not the only notable public figure in
attendance, though. We were deeply honored toalso have our Natl Jaycees President John
Weber in town.
President Weber began his day by meeting withChapter Presidents, giving them solid advice fromhis years in Jaycees. Your HCJ President cameaway much encouraged from this session, realizing
that many of our challenges, though difficult, arecommon experiences.
As everyone knows, though, the Main Event isthe evening banquet, when awards are given out for
projects and individual achievement.
In addition to our chapters top placement, manyHCJ projects were recognized as outstanding. In
fact, our chapter almost swept the project awardscompletely!
Following the final awards and the traditionalElectric Slide, it was time for a little pau hana. Th
meant heading for Party Central, located in the hroom of our friends in the Filipino Jaycees.
Toasts were served up in honor of alattending chapters as well as your newly el2010 State President, Mr. Stan Fichtmanstarted his Jaycee years in HCJ).
Our team finally headed home close to midtired but happy.

__________________________________________Meet HCJ VP Anthon
We have passed the midpoint of this year and it has been awesome! I am glad tsee the continuous growth and participation with the chapter in the past year I havebeen involved. We have had a bunch of fun with recruiting new members and doinfun events like the Farrells Birthday Bashes, Dinning out, Bowling, the Crazy Fairdays, and the adventurous hiking excursions! We have gained and met new friendsthrough the Jaycees. Now heres a little bit about myself.
People always ask why Im in the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, since they know tI dont have a drop of Chinese in me. I got introduced to the Jaycees through a good friend of mine and waswondering what this was all about. With the first event I came out to be the 50th state fair. I got to know a few of tmembers and had a bunch of fun. The rest is history.
When I am not doing Jaycee things like dinning out, movie nights, hiking, karaoke, GMMs, BOD meetings, anall the other events I am either golfing, checking out other events going on, or working. Golfing has been my recenindulgence; I started in January of 2009 and got addicted. I cant wait to get back on the course. I also like going oto different ethnic events and learning something new as often as I can.
As for what I do for a living, I take people through a process to figure out how they look at their future and helpthem prioritize and accomplish their goals.
It has been an awesome experience being a part of the Jaycees! I have met a vast amount of different individualthrough our chapter, other chapters, and events. I have made awesome new friends and contacts after becoming anactive member in the board and also creating stronger ties with each other.
I have learned more about how to run an event and how much work is done behind the scenes of the HonoluluChinese Jaycees. I look forward to all the upcoming events this year has to offer and starting up my hiking adventusoon.
Mahalo,Anthony Sato
