Valentine takes responsible initiative
Volleyball team starts new service projectThe Xavier volleyball team
has begun a service project with Baskets of Hope, a nonprofit organization that makes baskets of faith-centered essentials for people who have recently been diagnosed with a serious illness. They also deliver baskets to families who have lost a child as an infant, or had a child who was stillborn.
The content of each basket is similar. They contain religious items, such as a cross, a prayer journal, or Christian CDs. Depending on the needs of the
person receiving the basket, it is filled with personal items. A child may receive a basket full of toys, and a woman diagnosed with breast cancer could find lotion and candles. The aim of the basket is to provide an uplifting distraction from the illness.
All of the items in the baskets are either bought by Baskets of Hope or donated. Each basket is worth around $200. The Xavier volleyball team will help the organization by collecting items to donate and helping to fill the baskets with the gifts. Starting
next year, the volleyball team will hold drives for the items needed to fill the baskets. In addition, they will serve meals at The Ronald McDonald house, which is a partner with Baskets of Hope. The team will continue to serve throughout the year, not only during the volleyball season.
More information about the drives will be available in the coming year.

Sophomore Ben Valentine was confused as to why a student was wearing a bracelet with the slogan “young and reckless.” He did not understand why someone would be proud of being a reckless person. From there, he got the idea to sell bracelets with the slogan “young and responsible.”
Valentine asked around at school to get a feel for how many students would be interested in purchasing a bracelet. Initially, about 100 people signed up to buy them.
Valentine set the price at $4 per
bracelet and has decided to be the model of his bracelets by donating 12.5% of the profits to charity.
His hope is that people will be reminded to be responsible while wearing the bracelets. “It is a reminder to make good decisions, to not drink, to not drive 100mph in a 45mph,” Valentine said.
Valentine has started a Facebook page dedicated to his cause. If interested in more information, contact Ben at [email protected]. Sophomore Ben Valentine
