Gardwell Secure Systems (GSS), the security systems subsidiary of GSL Dardan Limited, has been busy defying the economic trend and continues to achieve success in growing its client base.

The company has seen a number of recent contract wins as demand for high quality CCTV in particular is on the increase.

Previously plagued by poor imaging since its inception back in the 1970's, when grainy silhouettes of criminals were being constantly replayed on the BBC Cr imewa tch p rog ramme, improving and evolv ing dig i ta l technology has taken the industry forward in leaps and bounds.

Although very much seen as a tool for crime reduction, including the valuable visual deterrent of having CCTV in situ, the use of these systems within businesses has additional benefits.

It can, and is often, used by companies to proactively monitor health and safety within the workplace and is used to supplement investigations into health and safety incidents. This can be of significant benefit to organisations given the litigious culture which now exists whenever an incident occurs. More importantly during an investigation of this type, it will assist in identifying the cause which will allow measures to be put in place to prevent future

occurrences.

A professionally installed CCTV system demonstrates that companies take security for their staff and assets seriously and in other situations also offers increased social benefits and peace of mind to users of facilities where it is installed.

As the CCTV has improved over recent years, the Police are also making huge advances in the use of CCTV in investigations. This has been of particular use after the London riots of 2011 where teams of investigators spent hours trawling through footage and identifying individuals involved. Such has become the expertise of police officers involved in these processes, special roles have been developed which have resulted in a 500% increase in the identification process which in turn has led to a high conviction rate for those involved.

GSS specialises in the design and installation of remotely monitored CCTV and offers a variety of systems to fit clients’ ever changing needs.

Safety Bulletin - March 2013

Robin Burden mob. 07734 059680

One of our key Company objectives for this year is to raise the number of near-miss reports. Some people prefer to call them "near-hits" - but we don't care how you think of them provided that when you see "an-accident-waiting-to-happen" you report it.

The reasoning behind this is that, although we are good at following up and investigating accident reports, this is "reactive management". In other words we're finding out what went wrong afterwards and trying to find why and if we can prevent it happening again. We want to get ourselves into more of an "active management" company. In other words encouraging hazard spotting before harm is done.

We've set up an online method of doing this.

Anyone can access this by going to and finding the link to the staff site at the bottom of the page. Follow the instructions to login using your first name and surname.

Once you have logged in, access the Health and Safety page, click on Near Miss reporting and follow the instructions. If you want to remain anonymous - fine; if you want to find out what was done, supply your contact details and we'll get back to you.

I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions for improvement.

Staff Profile

Hi, my name is Will Stewart.

I am 27 years of age. I was born in Las Vegas Nevada USA. I have two kids, Chanelle who is six and Trae who is four along with a new arrival very soon.

I enjoy spending time with my children as family values are very important to me.

My hobbies outside of work are swimming, running, camping, boxing, kickboxing; I had my last full contact kickboxing fight two years ago, before I

turned to boxing.

I train under a professional boxing coach, who has trained the likes of Herbie Hide, John Thaxton, Sam Sexton currently, some of whom are former world , European champions and British Commonwealth champions.

Mountain climbing is a keen interest of mine; I have climbed Pinnacle Mountain in Arkansas USA and the Clingsman Dome in the smoky mountains Tennessee USA - my long term goal will be Everest & Kilimanjaro.

My current role within GSL Dardan is Mobile Response & Control Room Team Leader based in Ipswich.

When I left school my first job was a trainee mechanic at Appleton's Engineering in Leiston Suffolk; I then started working at Wards Garage in Aldeburgh as a full time mechanic.

My interests then turned to the security industry. I started off working in nightclubs as a door supervisor, where I gained a lot of experience and was made up to security manager of the nightclub at 24 years old.

I then started working at Tower Ramparts shopping centre as a security officer in Ipswich, working my way up to senior security officer.

I then transferred to Riverside Entertainment Centre in Norwich as a security officer, soon working my way up to senior supervisor of the site.

I left Riverside to work in the Norwich control room at GSL Dardan, where I gained a great insight into the company.

Due to working away from my family a lot, I decided it would be best to relocate to Ipswich control room, I was then made up to the position I am currently in.
