4-H CLUB NEWS

Creston is in its first year of having an Archery group and it has become very popular. We have 13 members signed up. We have had several meetings this year and it’s always lots of fun.

We have learned safety rules, how to string a bow, and even how to make a homemade pin sight. We get to shoot special targets like balloons, and stars.

That’ll Do, Jack On February 20th, 2016, the Los Osos Pets and Small Animals group visited Jack, Jim, Ben and other border collies at Temple Border Collie ranch in Atas-cadero. The owner and handler, Fred Temple, gave a demonstration of the dogs in action herding sheep. He also talked about sheep herding as a profession or a hobby. The 4-Hers learned several verbal com-mands and whistles used to guide the dogs. They also learned about sheep breeds, tagging, and use in competition. All the 4-H’ers enjoyed meeting the dogs and sheep, and they all want to thank Fred Temple for taking the time to make it fun and educa-tional for all of us.

On February 20th, I attended the Youth Leadership Workshop. I was lucky to represent Estrella 4-H. We talked about speaking well in public and how to conduct fundraising activities. We also talked about what makes a good leader. We learned that it is good to be open to new ideas. We also played two very fun games. I met many new friends and had a really good time. We all agreed that we should treat each other with respect. I am looking forward to bringing these lessons back to my club. Submitted by: MaKayla M., Estrella 4-H Club Reporter
